Download or read book Medieval Answers to Modern Problems Revised Edition written by Albrecht Classen and published by Cognella Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-08-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Middle Ages were not only times of military conflicts, the formation of nations, and the rise of the Catholic Church, but also an era defined by profound exploration of what is magnificent and sublime in all aspects of life, including spirituality, aesthetics, architecture, ethics, religion, and philosophy. Rather than focusing extensively on historical events, as is done in many traditional textbooks on the Middle Ages, Medieval Answers to Modern Problems instead focuses on critical issues that have concerned people throughout time, and illustrates how studying the Middle Ages from an interdisciplinary perspective can shed light on contemporary efforts to deal with these issues. Topics covered in this book include the mind-body dichotomy, the relevance of the divine in material existence, interpretations of death and how to cope with death constructively, the pursuit of love in spiritual and earthly terms, and the idea of honor. Initially the Middle Ages seem completely alien to modern ways of thinking, yet they still speak deeply to our need for both human and divine values, and inner growth. The broad range of documents presented in the book will challenge readers, provoke thought, and demonstrate just how much can be learned from the past.

Book Medieval Answers to Modern Questions

Download or read book Medieval Answers to Modern Questions written by Neil J Smith and published by . This book was released on 2020-02 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contrary to popular perceptions, the European Middle Ages were a fertile intellectual period in history. The groundwork laid by scholastic philosophers of the Middle Ages made the advancements of the Renaissance possible. Given the myriad of social and political questions confronting us today, the author sent via time machine a letter to a scholastic philosopher to obtain the medieval perspective on these pressing modern problems. This book is the response that he received. It addresses a wide range of modern issues from a medieval perspective, ranging from the political (such as questions relating to socialism, immigration, and the right to bear arms) to the deeply personal (such as abortion and transgender rights). The book is written in the same question and answer style used by the scholastics, and is well researched with over 200 citations to medieval and classical sources. The definitive look at the writing of history by a historian, Historiography provides key insights into some of the most important issues, debates and innovations in modern historiography. Praise for the first edition: “Breisach’s comprehensive coverage of the subject and his clear presentation of the issues and the complexity of an evolving discipline easily make his work the best of its kind.”—Lester D. Stephens, American Historical Review

Book Medieval Foundations of International Relations

Download or read book Medieval Foundations of International Relations written by William Bain and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-15 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this volume is to explore the medieval inheritance of modern international relations. Recent years have seen a flourishing of work on the history of international political thought, but the bulk of this has focused on the early modern and modern periods, leaving continuities with the medieval world largely ignored. The medieval is often used as a synonym for the barbaric and obsolete, yet this picture does not match that found in relevant work in the history of political thought. The book thus offers a chance to correct this misconception of the evolution of Western international thought, highlighting that the history of international thought should be regarded as an important dimension of thinking about the international and one that should not be consigned to history departments. Questions addressed include: what is the medieval influence on modern conception of rights, law, and community? how have medieval ideas shaped modern conceptions of self-determination, consent, and legitimacy? are there ‘medieval’ answers to ‘modern’ questions? is the modern world still working its way through the Middle Ages? to what extent is the ‘modern outlook’ genuinely secular? is there a ‘theology’ of international relations? what are the implications of continuity for predominant historical narrative of the emergence and expansion of international society? Medieval and modern are certainly different; however, this collection of essays proceeds from the conviction that the modern world was not built on a new plot with new building materials. Instead, it was constructed out of the rubble, that is, the raw materials, of the Middle Ages. This will be of great interest to students and scholars of IR, IR theory and political theory. .

Book excerpt: For half a millennium it has been customary for many historians to refer to the period between the fall of Rome and the end of the fifteenth century as 'medieval', a tradition which hardened into a professional orthodoxy during the nineteenth century. In the late twentieth century, it also seemed convenient to many to describe the first half of a steadily lengthening modern period as 'early modern', which also hardened into an orthodoxy among English-speakers, at least, by the 1980s. Both ter ...
