Book Neural Control of Renal Function

Download or read book Neural Control of Renal Function written by Ulla Kopp and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2011 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The kidney is innervated with efferent sympathetic nerve fibers reaching the renal vasculature, the tubules, the juxtaglomerular granular cells, and the renal pelvic wall. The renal sensory nerves are mainly found in the renal pelvic wall. Increases in efferent renal sympathetic nerve activity reduce renal blood flow and urinary sodium excretion by activation of α1-adrenoceptors and increase renin secretion rate by activation of β1-adrenoceptors. In response to normal physiological stimulation, changes in efferent renal sympathetic nerve activity contribute importantly to homeostatic regulation of sodium and water balance. The renal mechanosensory nerves are activated by stretch of the renal pelvic tissue produced by increases in renal pelvic tissue of a magnitude that may occur during increased urine flow rate. Activation of the sensory nerves elicits an inhibitory renorenal reflex response consisting of decreases in efferent renal sympathetic nerve activity leading to natriuresis. Increasing efferent sympathetic nerve activity increases afferent renal nerve activity which, in turn, decreases efferent renal sympathetic nerve activity by activation of the renorenal reflexes. Thus, activation of the afferent renal nerves buffers changes in efferent renal sympathetic nerve activity in the overall goal of maintaining sodium balance. In pathological conditions of sodium retention, impairment of the inhibitory renorenal reflexes contributes to an inappropriately increased efferent renal sympathetic nerve activity in the presence of sodium retention. In states of renal disease or injury, there is a shift from inhibitory to excitatory reflexes originating in the kidney. Studies in essential hypertensive patients have shown that renal denervation results in long-term reduction in arterial pressure, suggesting an important role for the efferent and afferent renal nerves in hypertension. Table of Contents: Part I: Efferent Renal Sympathetic Nerves / Introduction / Neuroanatomy / Neural Control of Renal Hemodynamics / Neural Control of Renal Tubular Function / Neural Control of Renin Secretion Rate / Part II: Afferent Renal Sensory Nerves / Introduction / Neuroanatomy / Renorenal Reflexes / Mechanisms Involved in the Activation of Afferent Renal Sensory Nerves / Part III: Pathophysiological States / Efferent Renal Sympathetic Nerves / Afferent Renal Sensory Nerves / Conclusions / References

Book Diseases of the Kidneys and Nervous System Classic Reprint

Download or read book Diseases of the Kidneys and Nervous System Classic Reprint written by A. L. Blackwood and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of the Kidneys and Nervous System IN presenting this, the sixth and closing part of his work on Internal Medicine, the author does so real izing that although the field is already crowded with treatises upon this subject, yet the reception accorded the former numbers of this series has assured him that they have met a need. They have been prepared for the student and general practitioner, and not for the specialist. At this time the author desires to acknowl edge the many expressions of appreciation of the value of this series that have been accorded it. The author has endeavored to present the facts as he has observed them in his clinics, hospital and private practice, and as a result-oi this observation, the unproven have been omitted, and the verified and practical have been in corporated. For this reason the discussion of theories has been omitted, and for such the reader is referred to a cyclopedia treating of the subject. Special atten tion has been devoted to the subject of diagnosis, dif ferential diagnosis, hygienic and dietetic treatment, as well as the selection of the indicated remedy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Movable Kidney: A Cause of Insanity, Headache, Neurasthenia, Insomnia, Mental Failure and Other Disorders of the Nervous System; A Cause Also of Dilatation of the Stomach On October roth, 1905, ten days before the publishing of this book, I received from my book seller the latest edition of one of our most valuable works on Medicine,1 by Professor William Osler, Regius Professor of Medicine, Oxford University. Professor Osler gives only a very short resume on the subject of Movable Kidney. In this, however, are several statements which are SO diametrically opposed to the results of careful examination and treatment of world known gynaecologists in America, and the daily increasing interest taken in the subject that I propose to examine these statements and point out the errors in them. Under Symptoms of Movable Kidney,2 Professor Osler writes, In a large majority of cases there are no symptoms, and if detected accidentally it is well not to let the patient know of its presence. Download or read book Uremic Toxins written by Severin Ringoir and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book contains the Proceedings of a two day Symposium on Uremic Toxins organized at the University of Ghent in Belgium. A series of guest lectures, free communications and posters have been presented. An international audience of 163 scientists from 16 nationalities listened to and discussed extensively a spectrum of topics brought forward by colleagues and researchers who worked for many years in the field of Uremic Toxins. There is a striking contrast between all the new dialysis strategies available in the work to "clean" the uremic patients and the almost non-progression of our knowledge on uremic toxins in the past decade. In this sense the symposium was felt by all participants as a new start for the research in the biochemical field of the definition of uremia. If the present volume would stimulate new work in this field in order to define uremia, or identify the uremic toxins, the purpose of the organizers would be maximally fulfilled.

Book Function of Renal Sympathetic Nerves

Download or read book Function of Renal Sympathetic Nerves written by Yutang Wang and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sympathetic overactivity is associated with the development of hypertension. Renal denervation (RDN) prevents or delays hypertension in a variety of animal models, which laid the groundwork for the introduction of RDN as a clinical therapy in humans. In 2007, a novel, minimally invasive RDN ablation catheter was first trialled in hypertensive patients, with a 93% success rate of lowering blood pressure for at least three years post-RDN. However, a large scale, sham-controlled clinical trial (Symplicity HTN -3) failed to show reductions in BP greater than sham. The aim of this research topic was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of RDN, to explore the contribution of both afferent and efferent renal nerve activity to hypertension and non-hypertension disorders, and to stimulate future research to better understand the function of the renal nerves and the effects of RDN by highlighting gaps in knowledge.

Book Acute Kidney Injury and Regenerative Medicine

Download or read book Acute Kidney Injury and Regenerative Medicine written by Yoshio Terada and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-05-14 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents up-to-date information on the clinical-pathophysiological features of acute renal injury and discusses the KDIGO diagnostic criteria, as well as novel experimental findings, including in the area of regenerative medicine. It also highlights the clinical-pathophysiological importance of AKI in clinical settings, including differential diagnoses and management of AKI. In the past, the pathology associated with sudden renal impairment was characterized as acute renal failure (ARF). However, in the 2000s, the joint efforts of specialists in fields including nephrology, intensive care medicine, and cardiovascular medicine led to the introduction of a novel concept known as acute kidney injury (AKI). As medical care progressed, patients such as high-risk elderly subjects who were not deemed to be candidates for invasive therapy came to be treated in intensive care units (ICUs). As a result, kidney injury as a subset of multiple organ failure was re-considered as AKI, especially in intensive care medicine. AKI was then proposed as a novel disease concept to emphasize the importance of early diagnosis and early intervention to improve prognosis.Presenting novel features, such as the definition of AKI, risk factors and management; biomarkers, such as neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) and L-type fatty acid-binding protein (L-FABP); long-term outcomes of AKI; as well as renal regeneration using iPS cell, manipulation of embryonic genes, and Xenotransplanted embryonic kidney, this book is of interest to all physicians and researchers in this field around the globe.

This book was released on 2017-11-17 with total page 948 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cardiovascular, respiratory, and related conditions cause more than 40 percent of all deaths globally, and their substantial burden is rising, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Their burden extends well beyond health effects to include significant economic and societal consequences. Most of these conditions are related, share risk factors, and have common control measures at the clinical, population, and policy levels. Lives can be extended and improved when these diseases are prevented, detected, and managed. This volume summarizes current knowledge and presents evidence-based interventions that are effective, cost-effective, and scalable in LMICs.
