Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Cure Too Far takes the reader back to the bleak time in Africa when doctors stood by helplessly and watched in horror as their distraught patients were hijacked by a ragtag army of cocky healers. It describes an obstacle-strewn struggle to stop peddlers of fake AIDS drugs and other detractors while trying to find a scientifically proven solution to alleviate the carnage. This story is informed by incredible personal accounts of individuals who played different roles in the war for survival, and of those who found the agony too much to bear, as the relentless scourge ripped apart thousands of years of cultural practices. Even when hope appeared in January 2003, through the President's Emergancy Programme for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), a devastating financial crunch hit, threatening to undo all that had been achieved!

Book Design of Anti AIDS Drugs

Download or read book Design of Anti AIDS Drugs written by Erik De Clercq and published by Elsevier Publishing Company. This book was released on 1990 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are several steps in the replicative cycle of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that could be considered as adequate targets for chemotherapeutic intervention, e.g., virus attachment to the cells, virus penetration and uncoating, transcription of the viral (RNA) genome to proviral DNA, integration of the proviral DNA into host cell DNA, transcription of the proviral precursor proteins to mature viral proteins, assembly and release ('budding') of the viral particles. These processes depend on, and are regulated by, specific viral proteins. This makes many of these processes and proteins plausible targets for the design of selective inhibitors. The contributions assembled in this book are aimed at presenting what is known anno 1990 about (1) the different steps in the HIV replicative cycle that could be considered as targets for anti-HIV agents, (2) the compounds that interact with these targets and offer promise as candidate drugs for the treatment of HIV infection, and (3) to the extent that it has been resolved, the mechanism of interaction of the anti-HIV agents with their putative targets.

Book HIV AIDS Treatment Drugs

Download or read book HIV AIDS Treatment Drugs written by Brigid M. Kane and published by Facts On File. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) attacks select cells critical to the overall functioning of the body's defense system-the immune system. HIV is a virus belonging to the retrovirus family of viruses whose genetic material is RNA, not DNA. For those who are HIV infected, the infection is kept under control by suppressing viral replication through treatment with antiretroviral drugs. Today, HIV treatment typically includes combination therapy, with the administration of two or more antiretroviral drugs. HIV/AIDS Treatment Drugs explains how HIV can replicate itself within immune system cells to overwhelm the immune system and describes the drugs used to treat HIV infection, how they work individually and in combination, how HIV drugs are developed, and the new treatments under investigation. Drugs are part of everyday life. They can be found on the street, in school, and at home, and although many drugs are beneficial when used properly, the potential for abuse and misuse is great. Understanding Drugs provides a fact-based look at the most common legal and illegal drugs available today, explains how they work, and identifies the risks and benefits of using them. Whether dealing with drugs of abuse, such as cocaine, heroin, and marijuana, or therapeutic drugs, such as antibiotics, antidepressants, and prescription pain relievers, the best route to staying safe and healthy is to be informed. Book AIDS Drugs and Prevention

Download or read book AIDS Drugs and Prevention written by Tim Rhodes and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AIDS, Drugs and Prevention brings together a range of international contributions on the research, theory and practice of developing community-based HIV prevention. It aims to understand how individual actions to prevent HIV transmission are constrained and encouraged by situational and social context. Drawing on ethnographic and epidemiological research among populations of drug users, sex workers and gay men, it explores how future HIV prevention interventions can target changes at the level of the individual as well as at the level of the community and wider social environment. AIDS, Drugs and Prevention offers practical and theoretical insights into community-based health work in the time of AIDS. It provides invaluable reading for students, lecturers, researchers and practioners in health promotion, health policy, social work and medical sociology.

Book Economics of AIDS and Access to HIV AIDS Care in Developing Countries

Download or read book Economics of AIDS and Access to HIV AIDS Care in Developing Countries written by Jean-Paul Moatti and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book collects studies performed mainly with the support of the Agence Nationale de Recherche contre le Sida (French French National Agency of Research against AIDS). The purpose is to analyse the conditions to improve access to drugs against AIDS in developing countries, to urge on international agencies determinedly support patients treatment. The first part deals with the market of antiretrovirals and patents : How the prices drop taked place in 1998-2002, what were the debates about Intellectual Property Rights and WTO, what happened in countries as Brazil and Thailand? The second part deals with the impact of AIDS epidemic in the developing world and the role of therapeutic strategies to lower this impact. The book backs up the argument that the impact has been undersestimated and theses strategies are feasible.

Book Anti HIV Nucleosides

Download or read book Anti HIV Nucleosides written by Hiroaki Mitsuya and published by . This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1985, a broad family of dideoxynucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors were identified as being active against a divergent range of HIV "in vitro." Three such drugs - AZT, ddC, and ddI - had become prescription drugs by 1991. More recently, d4T and 3TC have been added to this nucleoside armamentarium. Indeed, despite their side effects, insufficient antiviral activity, and the propensity of HIV-1 to develop drug resistance, anti-HIV nucleosides have brought about substantial clinical benefits to HIV-1-infected individuals in the last decade. Even with the development of new modalities of AIDS therapy, anti-HIV nucleosides will continue to play a major role in the therapy of HIV-1 infection. This book discusses the development, rationale, present status, and the future of the use of anti-HIV nucleosides.

Book Les m dicaments du sida

Download or read book Les m dicaments du sida written by Isabelle Schrive and published by Ellipses Marketing. This book was released on 1995 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
