Book A Century of X Rays and Radioactivity in Medicine

Download or read book A Century of X Rays and Radioactivity in Medicine written by R.F Mould and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Century of X-Rays and Radioactivity in Medicine: With Emphasis on Photographic Records of the Early Years celebrates three great discoveries-x-rays (1895), radioactivity (1896), and radium (1898)-and recalls the pioneering achievements that founded the new science of radiology and changed the face of medicine forever. Over 700 historical illustrations with full and informative captions are supported by short introductory essays to illuminate the fascinating radiological past in an easy-to-read style. The focus of this book is on the historically more interesting early years of discovery, invention, diagnosis, therapy, dosimetry, risk, and protection. Interspersed with a variety of radiological anecdotes, the photographic record is complemented by archival accounts of the pioneer scientists and physicians and their early patients. In the chapters on diagnostic techniques, radiotherapy, and nuclear medicine, the author contrasts old methods with newer technologies. He also includes two fascinating chapters on museum and industrial applications of radiography. The book is comprehensively indexed for easy retrieval of the wide variety of people, techniques, apparatus, and examples featured throughout this radiological journey.

Book A Manual of Practical Medical Electricity

Download or read book A Manual of Practical Medical Electricity written by Dawson Turner and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-06-27 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We congratulate Dr. Dawson Turner on the appearance of this edition of his book, which is thoroughly revised and brought up to date. Nearly seventy pages have been added on treatment by Rontgen Rays, by the Finsen lamp, and by ultra-violet light. It is refreshing to find evidences of original work in a book on medical electricity, for only too often these books present a wearisome sameness, and show many signs of being compiled with the aid of scissors and paste. Dr. Dawson Turner's account of his study of the ultra-violet radiations yielded by the different lamps in use at the present time is a good piece of work, which will be of great use to those who are following up the same line of treatment. The condenser spark-lamp with iron terminals appears to hold its ground as the best source of ultra-violet radiations, but it must not be forgotten that we do not yet know whether the rays which act best upon lupus belong to the blue, the violet, or the ultra-violet regions of the spectrum. The author does not touch upon the strange influence of the static brush-discharge upon cutaneous disorders; a line of work which MacIntyre of Glasgow has brought to the notice of the profession, and one which certainly has proved to be useful in lupus, in chronic ulceration, and in some forms of superficial epithelioma. The subject of high-frequency treatment is referred to, and its principles are described, but the complicated technique recently introduced into this mode of treatment is (shall we say, rightly) ignored. High frequency is a form of electrical application which has yet to find its proper position; at present it labours under the disadvantage of having fallen into the hands of unqualified persons, and of being recommended for all sorts of quite unsuitable cases, so that its general influence upon the progress of electro-therapeutics threatens to be a bad one. -The Practitioner, Volume 71 [1903]

Book Man Or Matter

Download or read book Man Or Matter written by Ernst Lehrs and published by Rudolf Steiner Press. This book was released on 1985 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now a classic, this is the fundamental text for those seeking a "Spiritual Understanding of Nature on the Basis of Goethe's Method of Training Observation and Thought." Working out of a detailed history of science, Lehrs reveals to the reader not only how science has been inescapably led to the illusions it holds today, but more importantly, how the reader may correct in himself these misconceptions brought into his world view through modern education.

Book excerpt: This book, which will appeal to all with an interest in the history of radiology and physics, casts new light on the life and career of Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, showing how his personality was shaped by his youth in the Netherlands and his teachers in Switzerland. Beyond this, it explores the technical developments relevant to the birth of radiology in the late nineteenth century and examines the impact of the discovery of X-rays on a broad range of scientific research. Röntgen (1845-1923) was born in Lennep, Germany, but emigrated with his family to the Netherlands in 1848. As a 17-year-old he moved to Utrecht, entering the Technical School and living at the home of Dr. Jan Willem Gunning. In this well-educated family he was stimulated to continue his studies at university. In 1868 he received a diploma from the Federal Polytechnic School in Zurich and just a year later completed a PhD in physics. He followed his mentor, August Kundt, to the universities of Würzburg (1870) and Strasburg (1872) and married Anna Ludwig in 1872. In 1879 Röntgen gained his first professorship at a German University, in Giessen, followed by a chair in Würzburg in 1888. Here he discovered X-rays in 1895, for which he received the first Nobel Prize in physics in 1901. From 1900 until his retirement in 1921 he occupied the chair of physics at the Munich University.
