Download or read book Digital Media and Technology in Afterschool Programs Libraries and Museums written by Becky Herr-Stephenson and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation of how three kinds of youth organizations have integrated digital practices into their programs. Digital media and technology have become culturally and economically powerful parts of contemporary middle-class American childhoods. Immersed in various forms of digital media as well as mobile and Web-based technologies, young people today appear to develop knowledge and skills through participation in media. This MacArthur Report examines the ways in which afterschool programs, libraries, and museums use digital media to support extracurricular learning. It investigates how these three varieties of youth-serving organizations have incorporated technological infrastructure and digital practices into their programs; what types of participation and learning digital practices support; and how research in digital media and learning can contribute to better integration of technology within and across these organizations. The authors review a range of programs (including the long-running Computer Clubhouse movement, established in 1993 in partnership with MIT's Media Lab), and then use the idea of "media ecologies" to investigate the role that digital media play (or could play) in these "intermediary spaces for learning." They call for less anecdotal, more empirical and methodologically sound studies to help us understand the affordances of digital media for learning within and across these programs; for research focused on the relationship between digital media and the effectiveness of youth-serving organizations; and for further study of schools within childhood media ecologies.

Book excerpt: The media industry plays a vital role in informing and entertaining the public. Media ownership and the availability of diverse programming have been a long-standing concern of Congress. Despite numerous programming choices in TV and radio available to the public, independently produced programming ¿ that is, programming not affiliated with broadcast networks or cable operators ¿ has decreased through the years. This report discusses: (1) the extent to which the sources of TV programming have changed over the last decade; (2) the factors industry stakeholders identified as affecting the availability of independent TV programming; and (3) the factors industry stakeholders identified as influencing programming decisions in radio. The book is divided into 14 chapters, each devoted to a major topic in school library media management. This latest edition gives media specialists a roadmap for designing a school library that is functional and intellectually stimulating, while leading sources provide guidance for further research.
Download or read book Media Hot and Cold written by Nicole Starosielski and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2021-10-04 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Media Hot and Cold Nicole Starosielski examines the cultural dimensions of temperature to theorize the ways heat and cold can be used as a means of communication, subjugation, and control. Diving into the history of thermal media, from infrared cameras to thermostats to torture sweatboxes, Starosielski explores the many meanings and messages of temperature. During the twentieth century, heat and cold were broadcast through mass thermal media. Today, digital thermal media such as bodily air conditioners offer personalized forms of thermal communication and comfort. Although these new media promise to help mitigate the uneven effects of climate change, Starosielski shows how they can operate as a form of biopower by determining who has the ability to control their own thermal environment. In this way, thermal media can enact thermal violence in ways that reinforce racialized, colonial, gendered, and sexualized hierarchies. By outlining how the control of temperature reveals power relations, Starosielski offers a framework to better understand the dramatic transformations of hot and cold media in the twenty-first century.
Download or read book The Praeger Handbook of Media Literacy written by Art Silverblatt and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 945 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking two-volume set provides readers with the information they need to grasp new developments in the swiftly evolving field of media literacy. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) proclaimed media literacy a "fundamental human right." How fitting that there is finally a definitive handbook to help students and the general public alike become better informed, more critical consumers of mass media. In these A–Z volumes, readers can learn about methodologies and assessment strategies; get information about sectors, such as community media and media activism; and explore areas of study, such as journalism, advertising, and political communications. The rapid evolution of media systems, particularly digital media, is emphasized, and writings by notable media literacy scholars are included. In addition to providing a wide range of qualitative approaches to media literacy analysis, the handbook also offers a wealth of media literacy resources. These include lists of media literacy organizations and national media literacy programs, plus relevant books, websites, videos, and articles.

It discusses advances in the school and library media worlds, which continue to reel from budget cuts and hiring freezes. It profiles two outstanding individuals: Michael Molenda (Associate Professor, Instructional Systems Technology, Indiana University, Bloomington) and Ron Oliver (Foundation Professor of Interactive Multimedia, Edith Cowan University, Perth, Western Australia). It also identifies instructional technology-related organizations and graduate programs in North America. The book concludes with a mediagraphy of journals, books, ERIC documents, journal articles, and nonprint resources. As a repository of so much valuable data and information, it is, quite simply, a volume no self-respecting media and technology professional should be without.
