The manuscript then considers the chemical composition of bacteria, oligosaccharide catabolism, and transport of sugars. The publication takes a look at the fermentation of sugars and aerobic metabolism of carbohydrates. Discussions focus on Embden-Meyerhof fermentations, miscellaneous pathways, and hexose, pentose, polyol, and hexuronic acid oxidation. Book The Mechanism of Thiosulfate Oxidation by Thiobacillus Thiooxidans 8085

Download or read book The Mechanism of Thiosulfate Oxidation by Thiobacillus Thiooxidans 8085 written by and published by . This book was released on 1901 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growth of Thiobacillus thiooxidans 8085 on 9K medium containing thiosulfate instead of sulfur, as the sole energy source, was successfully attained. The optimum growth pH was maintained at 5.0 during cultivation. The cultivation period for T. thiooxidans on thiosulfate was 4-5 days at 28$\sp{\circ}$C. The final cell yield with 1% thiosulfate in a 4 liter reactor was 425 mg wet cells/L. The culture was continuously maintained with fresh medium. The harvested cells were washed and stored in 0.1M sodium citrate pH 6.0 buffer at 4$\sp{\circ}$C where full activity of the cells remained after 3 weeks. The mechanism of thiosulfate oxidation in T. thiooxidans 8085 was studied at pH 5.0 as well as pH 2.3 and pH 7.0. The oxidation of other reduced inorganic sulfur substrates tetrathionate, sulfur dissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), sulfur suspended in Tween 80 and sulfite were also studied. The cytochrome ystem of T. thiooxidans 8085 in both whole cells and cell-free crude extracts was also studied with various substrates, inhibitors and uncouplers. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).

Download or read book Bacterial Physiology written by C. H. Werkman and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bacterial Physiology focuses on the physiology and chemistry of microorganisms and the value of bacterial physiology in the other fields of biology. The selection first underscores the chemistry and structure of bacterial cells, including the chemical composition of cells, direct and indirect methods of cytology, vegetative multiplication, spores of bacteria, and cell structure. The text then elaborates on inheritance, variation, and adaptation and growth of bacteria. The publication reviews the physical and chemical factors affecting growth and death. Topics include hydrogen ion concentration and osmotic pressure; surface and other forces determining the distribution of bacteria in their environment; dynamics of disinfection and bacteriostasis; bacterial resistance; and types of antibacterial agents. The text also ponders on the anaerobic dissimilation of carbohydrates, bacterial oxidations, and autotrophic assimilation of carbon dioxide. The selection is a dependable reference for readers interested in bacterial physiology.

Book Microbial Iron Metabolism

Download or read book Microbial Iron Metabolism written by J. B. Neilands and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microbial Iron Metabolism: A Comprehensive Treatise provides a comprehensive treatment of microbial iron metabolism. It aims to contribute to an increased understanding of the path of iron in microbial species and, eventually, in the plant and animal. The book is organized into five parts. Part I describes some features of iron and its function in the microbial world. These include a historical sketch of the recognition of the importance of iron in cellular physiology; a description of certain physical properties of ferrous and ferric ions; and a list of various known biocoordination derivatives grouped by ligand atom. Metabolism under iron-limited conditions is also examined. Part II presents studies on iron transport, biosynthesis, and storage in microorganisms. Part III examines iron enzymes and proteins, including ferredoxin, rubredoxin, nitrogenase, and hydrogenase. Part IV deals with reactions of inorganic substrates. Part V presents a study on the role of bacterial iron metabolism in infection and immunity.
