Book Characterizing dental enamel s mechanical properties from milli to nanometer length scales

Download or read book Characterizing dental enamel s mechanical properties from milli to nanometer length scales written by Siang Fung Ang and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2012-07-24 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the structure-property relationship of enamel is a basis to improve restorative and preventive dentistry. The structure-mechanical properties relationship of dental enamel (made of apatite fibers and a small amount of organics and water) was studied. Enamel’s elastic moduli, elastic/inelastic transition were quantified and the toughening mechanisms were identified for different hierarchical levels. During creep, the interrod regions are able to dissipate higher irreversible energy compared to the enamel rod regions. For enamel fracture, the crack tip toughness, the cohesive stresses and size of the cohesive zone at the crack-tip were quantified.

Book Development Function and Evolution of Teeth

Download or read book Development Function and Evolution of Teeth written by Mark F. Teaford and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-02-01 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this field there has been an explosion of information generated by scientific research. One of the beneficiaries of this has been the study of morphology, where new techniques and analyses have led to insights into a wide range of topics. Advances in genetics, histology, microstructure, biomechanics and morphometrics have allowed researchers to view teeth from alternative perspectives. However, there has been little communication between researchers in the different fields of dental research. This book brings together overviews on a wide range of dental topics linking genes, molecules and developmental mechanisms within an evolutionary framework. Written by the leading experts in the field, this book will stimulate co-operative research in fields as diverse as paleontology, molecular biology, developmental biology and functional morphology.

Book Extracellular Matrix Biomineralization of Dental Tissue Structures

Download or read book Extracellular Matrix Biomineralization of Dental Tissue Structures written by Michel Goldberg and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-09-30 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the structural and biological properties of dental and peridental tissue structures and covers their mineralization process. The book contains a description of dentines, cementum, enamel and bone, including collagens, as well as non-collagenous proteins (SIBLINGs, SLRPs, GAGs, PGs, lipids, and MMPs). The mechanisms of mineralization are described in detail and the book is focused on matrix vesicles, collagen mineralization and the role of non-collagenous extracellular matrix components either as promoters or inhibitors of mineralization. In addition, the matrix components (non-collagenous) of enamel (amelogenin, ameloblastin, enamelin, MMP4, MMP20 and other proteases) are reviewed and their respective roles in dental tissues biomineralizations and tissue turnover are discussed. Additionally, environmental factors involved in enamel / dentin defects are adressed. With state-of-the-art contributions from experts in the respective domains, the book is a useful introduction to the field for junior scientists, interested in dental and peridental tissue biomineralization. It is also an interesting read for advanced scientists and clinicians working in dental research, giving them a broader view of the topic beyond their area of specialization. The series Biology of Extracellular Matrix is published in collaboration with the American Society for Matrix Biology.
