Download or read book Selected Works of David Brillinger written by Peter Guttorp and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-10 with total page 663 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains 30 of David Brillinger's most influential papers. He is an eminent statistical scientist, having published broadly in time series and point process analysis, seismology, neurophysiology, and population biology. Each of these areas are well represented in the book. The volume has been divided into four parts, each with comments by one of Dr. Brillinger's former PhD students. His more theoretical papers have comments by Victor Panaretos from Switzerland. The area of time series has commentary by Pedro Morettin from Brazil. The biologically oriented papers are commented by Tore Schweder from Norway and Haiganoush Preisler from USA, while the point process papers have comments by Peter Guttorp from USA. In addition, the volume contains a Statistical Science interview with Dr. Brillinger, and his bibliography.

Download or read book Paleomagnetic Rotations and Continental Deformation written by Catherine Kissel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most interesting results obtained in the last two decades in the study of crustal deformation has been the recognition that large regions of continental crust undergo rotations about vertical axis during deformation. Proof of such rotations has come through the paleomagnetic studies, which reveal rotations when paleomagnetic declinations within the deforming region arc compared with those found in coeval rocks in the stable regions outside the deforming zone. Such rotations were first described in Oregon then in the North American Cordilleras and in Southern California and were a surprise to everyone. Even in California which, as a result of oil exploration, was among the best geologically explored regions in the world, no one could claim to have predicted that these rotations would be found. Rotations have subsequently been found in other areas of recent continental tectonic activity, notably in the Basin and Range province, New Zealand, the Andes, Greece and Western Turkey, so that they appear as an important feature of continental deformation.

Download or read book Las Placas Tect nicas No Existen written by Francisco J. Madrigal and published by Palibrio. This book was released on 2012-06 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Geological Evolution of the Mediterranean Basin written by Daniel J. Stanley and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 786 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mediterranean Sea, nestled between Africa, southern Europe, and the Middle East, may be envisioned as a complex picture-puzzle comprising numerous intricate pieces, many of which are already in place. A general image, in terms of science, has emerged, although at this time large gaps are noted and some areas of the picture remain fuzzy and indistinct. In recent years this fascinating, mind-teasing puzzle image has become clearer with individual pieces more easily recognized and rapidly emplaced, largely by means of multidisciplinary and multinational team efforts. In this respect, the Special Program Panel on Marine Sciences of the NATO Scientific Af fairs Division considered the merits of initiating four conferences bearing on the Mediterranean ecosystem. It was suggested that the first, emphasizing geology, should dovetail with subsequent seminars on physical oceanogra phy, marine biology, and ecology and man's influence on the natural Medi terranean regime. At a conference held in Banyuls-sur-Mer, France, in August 1979, Profes sor Raimondo Selli was urged by some panel members to initiate an Ad vanced Research Institute (ARI) that would focus primarily on the geologi cally recent evolution of the Mediterranean Sea and serve as a logical base for future NATO conferences on the Mediterranean.
