Book Top Quark Pair Production Cross Sections and Calibration of the Top Quark Monte Carlo Mass

Download or read book Top Quark Pair Production Cross Sections and Calibration of the Top Quark Monte Carlo Mass written by Jan Kieseler and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-15 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents the first experimental calibration of the top-quark Monte-Carlo mass. It also provides the top-quark mass-independent and most precise top-quark pair production cross-section measurement to date. The most precise measurements of the top-quark mass obtain the top-quark mass parameter (Monte-Carlo mass) used in simulations, which are partially based on heuristic models. Its interpretation in terms of mass parameters used in theoretical calculations, e.g. a running or a pole mass, has been a long-standing open problem with far-reaching implications beyond particle physics, even affecting conclusions on the stability of the vacuum state of our universe. In this thesis, this problem is solved experimentally in three steps using data obtained with the compact muon solenoid (CMS) detector. The most precise top-quark pair production cross-section measurements to date are performed. The Monte-Carlo mass is determined and a new method for extracting the top-quark mass from theoretical calculations is presented. Lastly, the top-quark production cross-sections are obtained – for the first time – without residual dependence on the top-quark mass, are interpreted using theoretical calculations to determine the top-quark running- and pole mass with unprecedented precision, and are fully consistently compared with the simultaneously obtained top-quark Monte-Carlo mass.

Book A Measurement of Top Quark Pair and Photon Production Cross Section with CMS Detector

Download or read book A Measurement of Top Quark Pair and Photon Production Cross Section with CMS Detector written by Mikhail Makouski and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis the measurement of production cross section of top-quark pairs in association with a photon in proton-proton collisions at a center of mass energy of 8 TeV is presented. The data was recorded at the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2012. This measurement aims to extend our knowledge of top quark properties and help to test consistency of the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics. Data-driven methods are used to estimate the photon identification efficiency and purity. The measured cross-section agrees with the standard model expectation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before any kind of new physics discovery could be made at the LHC, a precise understanding and measurement of the Standard Model of particle physics' processes was necessary. The book provides an introduction to top quark production in the context of the Standard Model and presents two such precise measurements of the production of top quark pairs in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV that were observed with the ATLAS Experiment at the LHC. The presented measurements focus on events with one charged lepton, missing transverse energy and jets. Using novel and advanced analysis techniques as well as a good understanding of the detector, they constitute the most precise measurements of the quantity at that time.

Book ATLAS Measurements of the Higgs Boson Coupling to the Top Quark in the Higgs to Diphoton Decay Channel

Download or read book ATLAS Measurements of the Higgs Boson Coupling to the Top Quark in the Higgs to Diphoton Decay Channel written by Jennet Elizabeth Dickinson and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-11-16 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider, the ATLAS experiment recorded proton-proton collision events at 13 TeV, the highest energy ever achieved in a collider. Analysis of this dataset has provided new opportunities for precision measurements of the Higgs boson, including its interaction with the top quark. The Higgs-top coupling can be directly probed through the production of a Higgs boson in association with a top-antitop quark pair (ttH). The Higgs to diphoton decay channel is among the most sensitive for ttH measurements due to the excellent diphoton mass resolution of the ATLAS detector and the clean signature of this decay. Event selection criteria were developed using novel Machine Learning techniques to target ttH events, yielding a precise measurement of the ttH cross section in the diphoton channel and a 6.3 $\sigma$ observation of the ttH process in combination with other decay channels, as well as stringent limits on CP violation in the Higgs-top coupling.

Book First Measurement of the Running of the Top Quark Mass

Download or read book First Measurement of the Running of the Top Quark Mass written by Matteo M. Defranchis and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-03 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis, the first measurement of the running of the top quark mass is presented. This is a fundamental quantum effect that had never been studied before. Any deviation from the expected behaviour can be interpreted as a hint of the presence of physics beyond the Standard Model. All relevant aspects of the analysis are extensively described and documented. This thesis also describes a simultaneous measurement of the inclusive top quark-antiquark production cross section and the top quark mass in the simulation. The measured cross section is also used to precisely determine the values of the top quark mass and the strong coupling constant by comparing to state-of-the-art theoretical predictions. All the theoretical and experimental aspects relevant to the results presented in this thesis are discussed in the initial chapters in a concise but complete way, which makes the material accessible to a wider audience.

Book Measurement of the Top Quark Mass Using Single Top Quark Events in Proton proton Collisions at sqrt s

Download or read book Measurement of the Top Quark Mass Using Single Top Quark Events in Proton proton Collisions at sqrt s written by and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A measurement of the top quark mass is reported in events containing a single top quark produced via the electroweak t channel. The analysis is performed using data from proton-proton collisions collected with the CMS detector at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 inverse femtobarns. The top quark is reconstructed from its decay to a W boson and a b quark, with the W boson decaying leptonically to a muon and a neutrino. The specific topology and kinematic properties of single top quark events in the t channel are used to enhance the purity of the sample, suppressing the contribution from top quark pair production. A fit to the invariant mass distribution of reconstructed top quark candidates yields a value of the top quark mass of 172.95 +/- 0.77 (stat) +0.97/-0.93 (syst) GeV. This result is in agreement with the current world average, and represents the first measurement of the top quark mass in event topologies not dominated by top quark pair production.

Book Physics at the Large Hadron Collider

Download or read book Physics at the Large Hadron Collider written by Amitava Datta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-05-30 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an epoch when particle physics is awaiting a major step forward, the Large Hydron Collider (LHC) at CERN, Geneva will soon be operational. It will collide a beam of high energy protons with another similar beam circulation in the same 27 km tunnel but in the opposite direction, resulting in the production of many elementary particles some never created in the laboratory before. It is widely expected that the LHC will discover the Higgs boson, the particle which supposedly lends masses to all other fundamental particles. In addition, the question as to whether there is some new law of physics at such high energy is likely to be answered through this experiment. The present volume contains a collection of articles written by international experts, both theoreticians and experimentalists, from India and abroad, which aims to acquaint a non-specialist with some basic issues related to the LHC. At the same time, it is expected to be a useful, rudimentary companion of introductory exposition and technical expertise alike, and it is hoped to become unique in its kind. The fact that there is substantial Indian involvement in the entire LHC endeavour, at all levels including fabrication, physics analysis procedures as well as theoretical studies, is also amply brought out in the collection.

Book Measurements of the Top Quark Pair Production Cross Section and Branching Ratio to a W boson and Bottom Quark Using the Semi leptonic and Dilepton Final States with the ATLAS Detector at the LHC

Download or read book Measurements of the Top Quark Pair Production Cross Section and Branching Ratio to a W boson and Bottom Quark Using the Semi leptonic and Dilepton Final States with the ATLAS Detector at the LHC written by Robert E. Calkins and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract : In the Standard Model, the top quark plays a unique role as the heaviest known fundamental particle and as a quark that decays before it is able to hadronize. Top quarks are expected to decay to a W-boson and a b-quark nearly 100% of the time. If the branching ratio of t → Wb is lower than one, the distribution of the number of b-tagged jets will shift to lower multiplicities. A simultaneous likelihood fit to the number of b-tagged jets distributions in the lepton+jets and dilepton channels is performed on 4.7 fb−1 of data collected by the ATLAS detector to extract both the branching ratio and the tt ̄ cross section. The branching ratio of t → Wb, R, is measured to be 1.06±0.11, which is consistent with the Standard Model value. This is the first measurement of the t → Wb branching ratio performed with the ATLAS detector using both the lepton+jets and dilepton channels at the LHC. The tt ̄ cross section is measured to be [special characters omitted] pb, which agrees with NNLO predictions.

This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 25 years after the top quark's discovery, the Large Hadron Collider at CERN produces proton-proton collision data on unprecedented scales at unprecedented energies - and has heralded an era of top-quark precision measurements. The production of a top-quark pair in association with a photon ($t bar{t} gamma$) gives access to the electromagnetic top-photon coupling, one of the fundamental properties of the top quark. Various extensions of the Standard Model predict modifications of the coupling strength or structure, and deviations from the Standard Model prediction of the $t bar{t} gamma$ pr...

Book Measurement of the Top Quark Pair Production Cross Section in Pp Collisions at a Center of mass Energy of 7 TeV with the CMS Experiment at the LHC

Download or read book Measurement of the Top Quark Pair Production Cross Section in Pp Collisions at a Center of mass Energy of 7 TeV with the CMS Experiment at the LHC written by Geng-Yuan Jeng and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We perform a measurement of the top quark pair production cross section in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. The analysis is based on a 36 pb -1 dataset collected with the CMS experiment in 2010. We study the kinematic characteristics of events with exactly one isolated muon in association with additional hard jets and exhibiting substantial missing transverse energy to distinguish the tt− signal from the electroweak and QCD multijet backgrounds. The tt− signal is extracted by simultaneously fitting the tri-jet invariant mass distributions in events with exactly three jets and at least four jets. The measured cross section is 157 ± 12(stat.[Special characters omitted.] (syst.) ± 6(lumi.) pb, which is consistent with the theoretical predictions.

Book A Study of Top Quark Pair Using CMS Data

Download or read book A Study of Top Quark Pair Using CMS Data written by Muhammad Gul and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Large Hadron (LHC) is the highest-energy particle collider ever made. It was built by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) from 1998 to 2008, in collaboration with around 100 countries. The LHC lies in a tunnel 27 km in circumference and 100 m underground on Franco-Swiss border near Geneva, Switzerland. The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) is one of the general-purpose experiment at the LHC. It has recently discovered the Higgs Boson, the only missing piece of Standard Model (SM). LHC is also a Top Quark factory. Top Quark is the heaviest of all known elementary particles and has very short life time. It couples strongly to Higgs Boson and sensitive to New Physics. Therefore the study of Top Quark properties is very important. In this work different parameters of Top Quark, such as Mass, Transverse momentum, Energy etc, are studied.

Book Search for Pair produced Resonances Decaying to Top Quarks and Jets in Proton proton Collisions at 8 TeV with the CMS Detector at the LHC

Download or read book Search for Pair produced Resonances Decaying to Top Quarks and Jets in Proton proton Collisions at 8 TeV with the CMS Detector at the LHC written by Gala Nicolas Kaufman and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present a search for pair production of new physics resonances decaying into a top quark and a light parton in final states with two leptons, interpreting the results in the context of an R-parity violating supersymmetric model. We use 19.5 fb[-]1 of data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC from proton-proton collisions at s = 8 TeV in 2012. The experimental signature consists of two leptons (e or [MICRO SIGN]), two jets identified as originating from the decay of a b quark, and two jets identified as coming from light flavor quarks or gluons. We reconstruct and analyze potential resonant decays. The dominant standard model background is top quark pair production with additional jets from initialor final-state radiation. We perform an extended unbinned maximum likelihood fit to the transverse momenta of the two leading light jets and the reconstructed resonance mass. The observation is consistent with the standard model expectation, and we set upper limits on the signal cross section for R-parity violating bottom squarks with masses between 250 and 600 GeV. We exclude R-parity violating bottom squark pair production at the 95% confidence level between 250 GeV and 326 GeV.

Book Measurements of the Top Quark Mass and Decay Width with the D0 Detector

Download or read book Measurements of the Top Quark Mass and Decay Width with the D0 Detector written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The top quark discovery in 1995 at Fermilab is one of the major proofs of the standard model (SM). Due to its unique place in SM, the top quark is an important particle for testing the theory and probing for new physics. This article presents most recent measurements of top quark properties from the D0 detector. In particular, the measurement of the top quark mass, the top antitop mass difference and the top quark decay width. The discovery of the top quark in 1995 confirmed the existence of a third generation of quarks predicted in the standard model (SM). Being the heaviest elementary particle known, the top quark appears to become an important particle in our understanding of the standard model and physics beyond it. Because of its large mass the top quark has a very short lifetime, much shorter than the hadronization time. The predicted lifetime is only 3.3 · 10−25s. Top quark is the only quark whose properties can be studied in isolation. A Lorentz-invariant local Quantum Field Theory, the standard model is expected to conserve CP. Due to its unique properties, the top quark provides a perfect test of CPT invariance in the standard model. An ability to look at the quark before being hadronized allows to measure directly mass of the top quark and its antiquark. An observation of a mass difference between particle and antiparticle would indicate violation of CPT invariance. Top quark through its radiative loop correction to the W mass constrains the mass of the Higgs boson. A precise measurement of the top quark mass provides useful information to the search of Higgs boson by constraining its region of possible masses. Another interesting aspect is that the top quark's Yukawa coupling to the Higgs boson is very close to unity (0.996 ± 0.006). That implies it may play a special role in the electroweak symmetry breaking mechanism.
