Book CP Violation B Mixing and B Lifetime Results from the BaBar Experiment

Download or read book CP Violation B Mixing and B Lifetime Results from the BaBar Experiment written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric B Factory at SLAC collected a sample of 23 x 10[sup 6] B[bar B] pairs in the years 1999 and 2000. Using this data sample, we measure the amplitude of the time-dependent CP-violating asymmetry in neutral B decays to the CP eigenstates J/[psi] K[sub S][sup 0], [psi](2S) K[sub S][sup 0] and J/[psi] K[sub L][sup 0]. We find a value of sin2[beta]= 0.34[+-] 0.20(stat)[+-] 0.05(syst). We also present preliminary measurements of the B[sup 0][bar B][sup 0] oscillation frequency and of the lifetimes of charged and neutral B mesons.

Book Time Dependent CP Violation Measurements

Download or read book Time Dependent CP Violation Measurements written by Markus Röhrken and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-17 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes a high-quality, high-precision method for the data analysis of an interesting elementary particle reaction. The data was collected at the Japanese B-meson factory KEKB with the Belle detector, one of the most successful large-scale experiments worldwide. CP violation is a subtle quantum effect that makes the world look different when simultaneously left and right and matter and antimatter are exchanged. This being a prerequisite for our own world to have developed from the big bang, there are only a few experimental indications of such effects, and their detection requires very intricate techniques. The discovery of CP violation in B meson decays garnered Kobayashi and Maskawa, who had predicted these findings as early as 1973, the 2008 Nobel prize in physics. This thesis describes in great detail what are by far the best measurements of branching ratios and CP violation parameters in two special reactions with two charm mesons in the final state. It presents an in-depth but accessible overview of the theory, phenomenology, experimental setup, data collection, Monte Carlo simulations, (blind) statistical data analysis, and systematic uncertainty studies.

Book Limits on the Lifetime Difference of Neutral B Mesons and on CP T and CPT Violation in B0 B0bar Mixing

Download or read book Limits on the Lifetime Difference of Neutral B Mesons and on CP T and CPT Violation in B0 B0bar Mixing written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using events in which one of two neutral B mesons from the decay of an [Upsilon](4S) resonance is fully reconstructed, they set limits on the lifetime difference between the two neutral-B mass eigenstates and on CP, T, and CPT violation in B°{bar B}° mixing. Both CP and non-CP eigenstates were obtained from the 88 million [Upsilon](4S) → B{bar B} decays collected between 1999 and 2002 with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B-Factory at SLAC. They determine six independent parameters governing mixing ([Delta]m, [Delta][Lambda]/[Lambda]), CPT/CP violation (Rez, Imz), and CP/T violation (Im[lambda]{sub CP},

Book excerpt: We present results on time-dependent CP asymmetries in neutral B decays. The measurements use a data sample of about 88 million[Upsilon](4S)[yields] B[bar B] decays collected between 1999 and 2002 with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B Factory at SLAC. We study events in which one neutral B meson is fully reconstructed in a final state and the other B meson is determined to be either a B[sup 0] or[bar B][sup 0] from its decay products. Final states considered include B[sup 0][yields] J/[psi]K[sub S][sup 0], B[sup 0][yields] J/[psi]K[sub L][sup 0], B[sup 0][yields] J/[psi][pi][sup 0], B[sup 0][yields] D*[sup+] D*[sup -], B[sup 0][yields][phi]K[sub S][sup 0], B[sup 0][yields][pi][sup+][pi][sup -], and B[sup 0][yields][rho][sup[+-]][pi][sup[-+]].

Book Observation of CP Violation in the B0 System

Download or read book Observation of CP Violation in the B0 System written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The BABAR detector, operating at energies near the [Upsilon](4S) resonance at the PEP-II asymmetric B Factory at SLAC, has collected a sample of 32 million B{bar B} pairs by May 2001. A study of time-dependent CP-violating asymmetries in events where one neutral B meson is fully reconstructed in a final state containing charmonium has resulted in the measurement sin2[beta] = 0.59 ± 0.14 (stat) ± 0.05 (syst), which establishes CP violation in the B° meson system at the 4[sigma] level. B lifetime and mixing measurements from a sub-sample of 23 million B{bar B} pairs are also presented.

Book CP Violation in B Decays and the BaBar Experiment

Download or read book CP Violation in B Decays and the BaBar Experiment written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the first year of data taking, the 1999-2000 run, the BABAR detector at the SLAC PEP-II asymmetric collider has collected an integrated luminosity of 20.7 fb−1 corresponding to 22.7 million B{bar B} pairs at the [Upsilon](4S) resonance. Using this data, we present the measurement of sin2[beta] based on samples of B° → J/[psi] K{sub S}°, B° → [psi](2S) K{sub S}° and B° → J/[psi] K{sub L}° L decays. Our measured value is sin2[beta] = 0.34 ± 0.20 (stat) ± 0.05 (syst). In addition we report on the measurement of branching fractions for exclusive B decays to charmonium final states, measurements of charged and neutral B meson lifetimes and also the B°{bar B}° oscillation frequency.

Book B Physics And Cp Violation Proceedings Of The 2nd International Conference

Download or read book B Physics And Cp Violation Proceedings Of The 2nd International Conference written by Thomas E Browder and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1998-04-04 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CP violation is one of the most subtle effects in the Standard Model of particle physics and may be the first clue to the physics that lies beyond. Charge conjugation, C, and parity, P, are symmetries of particle interactions. C corresponds to the operation of replacing a particle by its antiparticle, while P is the operation of mirror reflection. Before 1956, it was believed that these were also symmetries of the interactions of elementary particles. In 1956, C S Wu found evidence for P violation in the weak interaction. Theorists proposed that the combination of CP would be a symmetry of the weak interaction. In 1964, Christenson, Cronin, Fitch and Turlay found the first evidence for the violation of CP symmetry in the decays of kaons.Although Kobayashi and Maskawa then showed how the Standard Model can accommodate the observed CP violation, Wolfenstein pointed out that it is also possible that there is a new interaction in addition to the usual four, called the superweak interaction, which is responsible for the asymmetry. To test this idea, the observation of a different type of asymmetry, called direct CP violation, is required; in the kaon sector, very precise measurements of the ratio of kaon decay rates are necessary. In B decay modes where a second order weak process whimisically named “penguin” interferes with another suppressed, first order “tree” amplitude, it may also be possible to observe these direct CP-violating effects.B physics and CP violation is now one of the major growth areas in high energy physics. Nearly every major high energy physics laboratory now has a project underway to observe the large CP asymmetries expected in the B sector and to test the consistency of the Standard Model. The unitarity of the Kobayashi-Maskawa mixing matrix in the Standard Model implies the existence of three phases, called alpha, beta and gamma, which can be determined by the measurements of CP asymmetries in B decays. About 200 participants gathered in Hawaii in March 1997 to discuss the progress in the field, and this important book constitutes the proceedings of that conference.

Book Measurement of Branching Fraction Ratios and CP Asymmetries in B D0 CPK Decays with the BABAR Detector

Download or read book Measurement of Branching Fraction Ratios and CP Asymmetries in B D0 CPK Decays with the BABAR Detector written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary goals of the BABAR experiment are the detection of CP violation (CPV) in the B meson system, the precise measurement of some of the elements of the CKM matrix and the measurement of the rates of rare B meson decays. At present, BABAR has achieved major successes: (1) the discovery, in neutral B decays, of direct and mixing-induced CP violation; (2) accurate measurements of the magnitudes of the CKM matrix elements.

Book Observation of CP Violation in the B sup 0 Meson System

Download or read book Observation of CP Violation in the B sup 0 Meson System written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present an updated measurement of time-dependent CP-violating asymmetries in neutral B decays with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. This result uses an additional sample of[Upsilon](4S) decays collected in 2001, bringing the data available to 32 million B[bar B] pairs. We select events in which one neutral B meson is fully reconstructed in final state containing charmonium and the flavor of the other neutral B meson is determined from its decay products. The amplitude of the CP-violating asymmetry, which in the Standard Model is proportional to sin2[beta], is derived from the decay time distributions in such events. The result sin2[beta]= 0.59[+-] 0.14 (stat)[+-] 0.05 (syst) establishes CP violation in the B[sup 0] meson system. We also determine[lambda]= 0.93[+-] 0.09 (stat)[+-] 0.03 (syst), consistent with no direct CP violation.

Book CP Violation in B s 0 J psi phi Decays

Download or read book CP Violation in B s 0 J psi phi Decays written by Sabato Leo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-24 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis reports on the final measurement of the flavor-mixing phase in decays of strange-bottom mesons (B_s) into J/psi and phi mesons performed in high-energy proton-antiproton collisions recorded by the Collider Experiment at Fermilab. Interference occurs between direct decays and decays following virtual particle-antiparticle transitions (B_s-antiB_s). The phase difference between transition amplitudes (“mixing phase”) is observable and extremely sensitive to contributions from non-standard-model particles or interactions that may be very hard to detect otherwise – a fact that makes the precise measurement of the B_s mixing phase one of the most important goals of particle physics. The results presented include a precise determination of the mixing phase and a suite of other important supplementary results. All measurements are among the most precise available from a single experiment and provide significantly improved constraints on the phenomenology of new particles and interactions.
