Book Measurement While Drilling MWD Signal Analysis Optimization and Design

Download or read book Measurement While Drilling MWD Signal Analysis Optimization and Design written by Wilson Chin and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-04-16 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trade magazines and review articles describe MWD in casualterms, e.g., positive versus negative pulsers, continuous wavesystems, drilling channel noise and attenuation, in very simpleterms absent of technical rigor. However, few trulyscientific discussions are available on existing methods, let alonethe advances necessary for high-data-rate telemetry. Withouta strong foundation building on solid acoustic principles, rigorousmathematics, and of course, fast, inexpensive and efficient testingof mechanical designs, low data rates will impose unacceptablequality issues to real-time formation evaluation for years tocome. This book promises to change all of this. The lead authorand M.I.T. educated scientist, Wilson Chin, and Yinao Su,Academician, Chinese Academy of Engineering, and other teammembers, have written the only book available that developsmud pulse telemetry from first principles, adapting sound acousticprinciples to rigorous signal processing and efficient wind tunneltesting. In fact, the methods and telemetry principlesdeveloped in the book were recently adopted by one of theworld’s largest industrial corporations in its mission toredefine the face of MWD. The entire engineering history for continuous wave telemetry iscovered: anecdotal stories and their fallacies, original hardwareproblems and their solutions, different noise mechanisms and theirsignal processing solutions, apparent paradoxes encountered infield tests and simple explanations to complicated questions, andso on, are discussed in complete “tell all” detail forstudents, research professors and professional engineersalike. These include signal processing algorithms, signalenhancement methods, and highly efficient “short” and“long wind tunnel” test methods, whose results can bedynamically re-scaled to real muds flowing at any speed. Amust read for all petroleum engineering professionals!

  • Pages : 547 pages

Download or read book Seismic While Drilling written by F.B Poletto and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2004-06-30 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to give a theoretical and practical introduction to seismic-while-drilling by using the drill-bit noise. This recent technology offers important products for geophysical control of drilling. It involves aspects typical of borehole seismics and of the drilling control surveying, hitherto the sole domain of mudlogging. For aspects related to the drill-bit source performance and borehole acoustics, the book attempts to provide a connection between experts working in geophysics and in drilling. There are different ways of thinking related to basic knowledge, operational procedures and precision in the observation of the physical quantities. The goal of the book is to help "build a bridge" between geophysicists involved in seismic while drilling - who may need to familiarize themselves with methods and procedures of drilling and drilling-rock mechanics - and drillers involved in geosteering and drilling of "smart wells" - who may have to familiarize themselves with seismic signals, wave resolution and radiation. For instance, an argument of common interest for drilling and seismic while drilling studies is the monitoring of the drill-string and bit vibrations. This volume contains a large number of real examples of SWD data analysis and applications.

Book An Innovative High Temperature High Pressure Measurement While Drilling MWD Tool

Download or read book An Innovative High Temperature High Pressure Measurement While Drilling MWD Tool written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurement while drilling (MWD) tools specified to 150 C (302 F) that provide wellbore surveys, real-time inclination, and natural gamma ray detection are a commodity item in the oilfield services industry. MWD tools specified to 175 C (347 F) that routinely demonstrate highly reliable operation are available from only a few service companies. Commercial MWD tools that reliably operate to 200 C (392 F) for extended periods of time and offer features like real-time gamma ray, retrievability, and reseatability are nonexistent. Need for these higher temperature tools will increase as wells become hotter in the search for new oil and gas resources. The goal of this project was to design a retrievable and reseatable high-pressure/high-temperature MWD tool with real-time continuous inclination, vibration detection, annular pressure, and gamma ray detection. This report describes the development of such a tool from concept, through feasibility, and into field testing and preliminary development planning. It describes the challenges encountered in the design of the tool, along with testing results and decisions about the commercial viability of the tool in the configuration in which it was developed. The decision was made not to commercialize the tool developed under this project because of a combination of battery technology problems and modulation power consumption at the required depths.

Book Borehole Electromagnetic Telemetry System

Download or read book Borehole Electromagnetic Telemetry System written by Jiefu Chen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-06-20 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains the theory, numerical modeling, and applications of a borehole electromagnetic telemetry system used for wireless communication between the downhole tool and the surface control center during oilfield drilling. The authors begin by introducing borehole electromagnetic telemetry and explaining each part of the system with schematics and illustrations. They describe the working principle and compare it with other borehole wireless communication methods, such as mud pulse telemetry. They then address 2D and 3D electromagnetic telemetry modelling, listing previous 2D and 3D modeling methods and detailing the advantages and limitations, before discussing their recent work on a novel layered finite element method for 2D electromagnetic telemetry modelling, and on 3D electromagnetic modelling based on integral equation, thin wire kernel, and layered medium Green’s functions. Lastly, the authors show applications of electromagnetic telemetry, including single well borehole wireless communication and cross well communication in pad drilling. This includes photos, figures, and field data from real oilfield jobs. This book is a useful reference for drilling engineers, well logging tool research and development scientists and researchers, as well as for students in the areas of petroleum engineering and electrical engineering.
