Book excerpt: This dissertation measures an inclusive branching fraction of (13.9 +- 2.0/sub -2.4//sup +2.1/)% for the decay tau− .-->. nu/sub tau/.pi.−.pi.° + nh° where h° is a .pi.° or an eta and n greater than or equal to 1. The data sample, obtained with the TPC detector facility at PEP, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 72 pb−1 at 29 GeV center of mass energy. The measured value for this branching fraction is somewhat greater than the theoretical prediction and, taking errors into account, resolves the present difference between the inclusive and the sum of the exclusive tau− branching fractions into one charged prong. In addition, a lower limit of 8.3% (95% CL) is placed on the branching fraction B(tau− .-->. nu/sub tau/.pi.−.pi.°.pi.°).

K/sub S/°X−nu/sub tau/. The experiment was performed using the High Resolution Spectrometer at the PEP storage ring. The measured branching fraction is (0.64 +- 0.15)%. The data are consistent with all K/sub S/° coming from the Cabibbo-suppressed decay tau .-->. K*−(890)nu/sub tau/ leading to a branching ratio of (1.9 +- 0.28 +- 0.25)% for this channel. The inclusive sample was used to set 90% CL limits on the branching fractions of tau− .-->. rho−(1600)nu/sub tau/ and tau− .-->. K*−(1430)nu/sub tau/ of 8.5%, and 0.3% respectively. 18 refs., 3 figs.

Book excerpt: The branching fraction for the decay D{sub s} →?+?{sub?} with?+ → e+{bar?}{sub {tau}}, is measured using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 427 fb−1 collected at center of mass energies near 10.58 GeV with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e− collider at SLAC. In the process e+e− → c{bar c} → D*{sub s}+ {bar D}{sub TAG}{bar K}X, the D*{sub s}+ meson is reconstructed as a missing particle, and the subsequent decay D*{sub s}+ → D{sub s}+? yields an inclusive D{sub s}+ data sample. Here {bar D}{sub TAG} refers to a fully reconstructed hadronic {bar D} decay, {bar K} is a K− or {bar K}°, and X stands for any number of charged or neutral pions. The decay D{sub s}+ → K{sub S}°K+ is isolated also, and from ratio of event yields and known branching fractions,?(D{sub s}+ → {tau}+{nu}{sub {tau}}) = (4.5 ± 0.5 ± 0.4 ± 0.3)% is determined. The pseudoscalar decay constant is extracted to be f{sub D{sub s}} = (233 ± 13 ± 10 ± 7) MeV, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third results from the uncertainties on the external measurements used as input to the calculation.

(h =? or K) and?− K−?°? decay modes using a sample of?-pair events collected by the BABAR detector at the SLAC PEP-II asymmetric e+e− storage ring. The branching fractions of?− 2!?−?−?+,?− 2!K−?−?+?, and?− 2!K−?−K+? are measured with higher precision than previously published results and the inclusive branching fraction?− 2!K−K−K+? is measured for the first time. In addition, the first measurement of the branching fraction?− 2!?−?? and the measurement of the branching fraction?− 2!K−?? are determined by means of a binned maximum likelihood fit to the K+K− invariant mass distribution. These branching fractions are extracted by means of a migration matrix that accounts for the cross contamination between the?− 2!h−h−h+? modes. The preliminary?− 2!K−?°? branching fraction and invariant mass distributions are also presented in this paper.
