Book Higgs Mass Determination from Direct Reconstruction at a Linear E e Collider

Download or read book Higgs Mass Determination from Direct Reconstruction at a Linear E e Collider written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We study the feasibility of a precise measurement of the mass of a 120 GeV MSM Higgs boson through direct reconstruction of ZH --> q{bar q}H events that would be achieved in a future ee− linear collider operating at a center-of-mass energy of 500 GeV. Much effort has been put in a ''realistic simulation'' by including irreducible+reducible backgrounds, realistic detector effects and reconstruction procedures and sophisticated analysis tools involving Neural Networks and kinematical fitting. As a result, the Higgs mass is determined with a statistical accuracy of 50 MeV and the Z-Higgs Yukawa coupling measured to 0.7%, assuming 500 fb−1 of integrated luminosity.

Book Discovery Of The Higgs Boson

Download or read book Discovery Of The Higgs Boson written by Aleandro Nisati and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2016-08-26 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent observation of the Higgs boson has been hailed as the scientific discovery of the century and led to the 2013 Nobel Prize in physics. This book describes the detailed science behind the decades-long search for this elusive particle at the Large Electron Positron Collider at CERN and at the Tevatron at Fermilab and its subsequent discovery and characterization at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Written by physicists who played leading roles in this epic search and discovery, this book is an authoritative and pedagogical exposition of the portrait of the Higgs boson that has emerged from a large number of experimental measurements. As the first of its kind, this book should be of interest to graduate students and researchers in particle physics.

Book Measurement of Higgs Boson Branching Fractions

Download or read book Measurement of Higgs Boson Branching Fractions written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We describe methods one can employ at a [radical]s = 500 GeV e[sup +]e[sup [minus]] linear collider to measure the branching fractions of a Higgs boson. These methods select one Higgs decay mode above all others with high purity, leaving measureable Standard Model backgrounds as the only source of contamination. Integrated luminosities of 50fb[sup [minus]1] are required to obtain statistical errors of 10--20% on the branching fractions to b[bar b], [tau][sup +][tau][sup [minus]], and WW(*). For an intermediate mass Higgs this is sufficient to distinguish the MSSM from the Standard Model Higgs over most of the Supersymmetric parameter space.

Book The theory and discovery of the Higgs boson

Download or read book The theory and discovery of the Higgs boson written by Siyuan Chen and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2014-09-17 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Physics - Theoretical Physics, grade: 71 points, King`s College London, language: English, abstract: An overview of the steps that lead to the discovery of the Higgs boson is presented. Starting with the theoretical background framework, the Standard Model of particel physics, the Higgs field will be introduced as an addition. This extra field provides the mechanism for spontaneous symmetry breaking, that is needed to explain the existence of massive particles. An overview of the steps of the experimental search to the discovery of the Higgs boson is given in the second part of this article. Its mass has been measured to be 125.4 ± 0.4(stat) ± 0.5(sys) GeV. The Standard Model is briefly summarised. The Higgs mechanism is derived from an Abelian Model, applied to the gauge bosons of the electroweak model of Weinberg and Salam. A simple estimate of the Higgs mass is given by its derivation and the estimation of its self-coupling and vacuum expectation value. Experimental results will be presented from the CMS and ATLAS detectors at the LHC, alongside with a description of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN and possible directions for future experiments beyond the Standard Model.

Book Exploring the Large Hadron Collider The Discovery of the Higgs Particle

Download or read book Exploring the Large Hadron Collider The Discovery of the Higgs Particle written by Michael Hauschild and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Hauschild takes the reader of this essential back to the year 2012, when the discovery of the Higgs particle was announced at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research near Geneva, Switzerland. The author vividly explains the Higgs mechanism for mass generation with the central role of the Higgs particle in current particle physics and the long hunt for its discovery at the Large Hadron Collider LHC. After a stop of more than two years, the LHC, the world‘s largest particle accelerator was put back into operation in spring 2015 to discover the secrets of nature at higher energy than ever before. An overview of future projects concludes this essential. This Springer essential is a translation of the original German 1st edition essentials, Neustart des LHC: die Entdeckung des Higgs-Teilchens by Michael Hauschild, published by Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden GmbH, part of Springer Nature in 2018. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically different from a conventional translation. Springer Nature works continuously to further the development of tools for the production of books and on the related technologies to support the authors. The Content Mass does it! - How the particles get their mass From UFOs and more! - The LHC goes into the next round The plan of the century! - Higgs, what next? The Target groups Scientifically interested laymen and students Lecturers and students of the Studium Generale and the natural sciences The Author Dr. Michael Hauschild is a particle physicist at CERN in Geneva and has been a member of the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider LHC since 2005. During the first long measurement period of the LHC from 2010 to 2012, he witnessed the discovery of the Higgs particle in summer 2012.
