Book Measurements of the Heat Transfer Coefficient Distribution on Flat and Ribbed Surfaces with Interrupted Heating Using Thermochromic Liquid Crystals

Download or read book Measurements of the Heat Transfer Coefficient Distribution on Flat and Ribbed Surfaces with Interrupted Heating Using Thermochromic Liquid Crystals written by Jason D. Wolf and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements of the heat transfer coefficient distribution on flat and ribbed surfaces with interrupted heating are presented. One application of this type of thermal boundary condition is the cooling of surface mounted modules in electronic packaging. Heating occurs at the modules, with no heating between the modules. The heat transfer measurements in the present study are made using the heated-coating method with a thermochromic liquid crystal (TLC). The "coating" is vacuum-deposited gold on a plastic sheet, which is mounted on a Styrofoam surface. The gold film is electrically heated to produce the surface heat flux. The surface temperature is measured by capturing color images of the TLC, using the hue technique. These surface temperature plots are transformed into heat transfer coefficient distributions on the surface of the models. Interrupted heating on the flat surface is obtained by heating strips perpendicular to the freestream flow, with insulated spaces between the strips. The ribbed surface is heated on the top of the ribs only, with insulated unheated cavities in-between. The results show that, as expected, the local heat transfer coefficient is higher on the heated strips of the flat surface interrupted heating case, than would be present at the same locations with a uniform heat flux. The interruption of the thermal boundary layer at each unheated section allows it to "reset", thereby causing the higher heat transfer on the following heated section. The ribbed model shows a slight increase in heat transfer on the ribs above that of the flat plate interrupted heating model. The cavities appear to introduce mixing that causes this change. The increase in h due to the ribs is small, however, when compared to the effect of the interrupted heating.

Book Encyclopedia of Research Design

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Research Design written by Neil J. Salkind and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2010-06-22 with total page 1779 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Comprising more than 500 entries, the Encyclopedia of Research Design explains how to make decisions about research design, undertake research projects in an ethical manner, interpret and draw valid inferences from data, and evaluate experiment design strategies and results. Two additional features carry this encyclopedia far above other works in the field: bibliographic entries devoted to significant articles in the history of research design and reviews of contemporary tools, such as software and statistical procedures, used to analyze results. It covers the spectrum of research design strategies, from material presented in introductory classes to topics necessary in graduate research; it addresses cross- and multidisciplinary research needs, with many examples drawn from the social and behavioral sciences, neurosciences, and biomedical and life sciences; it provides summaries of advantages and disadvantages of often-used strategies; and it uses hundreds of sample tables, figures, and equations based on real-life cases."--Publisher's description.

The book is intended for researchers and practitioners in the field of chemistry, metrologists, technical physics, as well as for specialists in analytical laboratories, or working for companies and organizations involved in the production, distribution and use of reference materials.

Book The Universal Coefficient Theorem and Quantum Field Theory

Download or read book The Universal Coefficient Theorem and Quantum Field Theory written by Andrei-Tudor Patrascu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-23 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes a new connection between algebraic geometry, topology, number theory and quantum field theory. It offers a pedagogical introduction to algebraic topology, allowing readers to rapidly develop basic skills, and it also presents original ideas to inspire new research in the quest for dualities. Its ambitious goal is to construct a method based on the universal coefficient theorem for identifying new dualities connecting different domains of quantum field theory. This thesis opens a new area of research in the domain of non-perturbative physics—one in which the use of different coefficient structures in (co)homology may lead to previously unknown connections between different regimes of quantum field theories. The origin of dualities is an issue in fundamental physics that continues to puzzle the research community with unexpected results like the AdS/CFT duality or the ER-EPR conjecture. This thesis analyzes these observations from a novel and original point of view, mainly based on a fundamental connection between number theory and topology. Beyond its scientific qualities, it also offers a pedagogical introduction to advanced mathematics and its connection with physics. This makes it a valuable resource for students in mathematical physics and researchers wanting to gain insights into (co)homology theories with coefficients or the way in which Grothendieck's work may be connected with physics.
