Book Measurement of the Charged current Quasi elastic Cross section for Electron Neutrinos on a Hydrocarbon Target

Download or read book Measurement of the Charged current Quasi elastic Cross section for Electron Neutrinos on a Hydrocarbon Target written by Jeremy Wolcott and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "We report herein the first-ever measurement of a cross-section for an exclusive state in electron neutrino scattering at the GeV scale, which was made using the MINERvA detector in the NuMI neutrino beam at Fermilab. We present the electron neutrino CCQE differential cross-sections, which are averaged over neutrinos of energies 1-10 GeV (with mean energy of about 3 GeV), in terms of various kinematic variables: final-state electron angle, final-state electron energy, and the square of the four-momentum transferred to the nucleus by the neutrino, Q2. We also provide a total cross-section vs. neutrino energy. While our measurement of this process is found to be in agreement with the predictions of the GENIE event generator, we also report on an unpredicted photon-like process we observe in a similar kinematic regime. The absence of this process from models for neutrino interactions is a potential stumbling block for future on-axis neutrino oscillation experiments. We include kinematic and particle species identification characterizations which can be used in building models to help address this shortcoming"--Page vi.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the fundamentals of particle detectors as well as their applications. Detector development is an important part of nuclear, particle and astroparticle physics, and through its applications in radiation imaging, it paves the way for advancements in the biomedical and materials sciences. Knowledge in detector physics is one of the required skills of an experimental physicist in these fields. The breadth of knowledge required for detector development comprises many areas of physics and technology, starting from interactions of particles with matter, gas- and solid-state physics, over charge transport and signal development, to elements of microelectronics. The book's aim is to describe the fundamentals of detectors and their different variants and implementations as clearly as possible and as deeply as needed for a thorough understanding. While this comprehensive opus contains all the materials taught in experimental particle physics lectures or modules addressing detector physics at the Master's level, it also goes well beyond these basic requirements. This is an essential text for students who want to deepen their knowledge in this field. It is also a highly useful guide for lecturers and scientists looking for a starting point for detector development work.

Book Measurement of the nu mu Charged Current pi to Quasi Elastic Cross Section Ratio on Mineral Oil in a 0 8 GeV Neutrino Beam

Download or read book Measurement of the nu mu Charged Current pi to Quasi Elastic Cross Section Ratio on Mineral Oil in a 0 8 GeV Neutrino Beam written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charged current single pion production (CC[pi]+) and charged current quasi-elastic scattering (CCQE) are the most abundant interaction types for neutrinos at energies around 1 GeV, a region of great interest to oscillation experiments. The cross-sections for these processes, however, are not well understood in this energy range. This dissertation presents a measurement of the ratio of CC[pi]+ to CCQE cross-sections for muon neutrinos on mineral oil (CH2) in the MiniBooNE experiment. The measurement is presented here both with and without corrections for hadronic re-interactions in the target nucleus and is given as a function of neutrino energy in the range 0.4 GeV

Book Measurement of Muon Neutrino Quasi Elastic Like Scattering on a Hydrocarbon Target at bf E nu sim 6 GeV

This book was released on 2016 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The MINERA Experiment (Main Injector Experiment $\nu$ -A interaction) is a highly segmented detector of neutrinos, able to record events with high precision using the NuMI Beam (Neutrino Main Injector) at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. In this thesis, we present the rst measurement of the charged current quasi-elastic-like interaction on polystyrene scintillator (CH) in the MINERA detector at neutrino energies around 6 GeV. The dataset used was taken between 2013 and 2014 with a total of 1:17 x $10^{21}$ protons on target. The interactions were selected by requiring a negative muon, a reconstructed and identied proton, no michel electrons in the nal state (in order to get rid of soft pions decaying) and a low calorimetric recoil energy away from the interaction vertex. The nal measurement reported is a dierential cross section in terms of the muon quadratic transfered energy $Q^{2}$.

This book was released on 2011 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charged current single pion production (CC?+) and charged current quasi-elastic scattering (CCQE) are the most abundant interaction types for neutrinos at energies around 1 GeV, a region of great interest to oscillation experiments. The cross-sections for these processes, however, are not well understood in this energy range. This dissertation presents a measurement of the ratio of CC?+ to CCQE cross-sections for muon neutrinos on mineral oil (CH2) in the MiniBooNE experiment. The measurement is presented here both with and without corrections for hadronic re-interactions in the target nucleus and is given as a function of neutrino energy in the range 0.4 GeV Esub?/sub 2.4 GeV. With more than 46,000 CC?sup+/sup events collected in MiniBooNE, and with a fractional uncertainty of roughly 11% in the region of highest statistics, this measurement represents a dramatic improvement in statistics and precision over previous CC?

Book An Improved Measurement of the Muon Neutrino Charged Current Quasi elastic Cross section on Hydrocarbon at Minerva

Download or read book An Improved Measurement of the Muon Neutrino Charged Current Quasi elastic Cross section on Hydrocarbon at Minerva written by Dun Zhang and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutrino interactions in the detectors of long baseline oscillation experiments are analyzed to determine the neutrino flavor and energy spectrum, allowing the neutrino mass ordering and mixing parameters to be determined. For neutrino interactions below the pion production threshold, the dominant reaction is charged current quasi-elastic (CCQE) scattering. Oscillation experiments are made of heavy nuclei so the QE process occurs on nucleons that are embedded in the nuclear environment. Predictions of the QE cross-section suffer from significant uncertainties due to our understanding of that nuclear environment and the way it is probed by the weak interaction. I have developed a new technique to reduce the inelastic background to CCQE process by identifying the "Michel electrons" produced by pions. Additionally an updated neutrino flux was used to extract the cross-section and estimates for some sources of systematic uncertainties have been improved. The measured cross-section is compared to several theoretical models and the effect that the signal definition ("CCQE" vs "CCQE-like") has on the measurement is also explored.

Book Measurement of Electron Neutrino Quasielastic and Quasielasticlike Scattering on Hydrocarbon at langle E nu rangle

Download or read book Measurement of Electron Neutrino Quasielastic and Quasielasticlike Scattering on Hydrocarbon at langle E nu rangle written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first direct measurement of electron neutrino quasielastic and quasielasticlike scattering on hydrocarbon in the few-GeV region of incident neutrino energy has been carried out using the MINERvA detector in the NuMI beam at Fermilab. The flux-integrated differential cross sections in the electron production angle, electron energy, and Q2 are presented. The ratio of the quasielastic, flux-integrated differential cross section in Q2 for [nu]e with that of similarly selected [nu][mu]-induced events from the same exposure is used to probe assumptions that underpin conventional treatments of charged-current [nu]e interactions used by long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. Furthermore, the data are found to be consistent with lepton universality and are well described by the predictions of the neutrino event generator GENIE.

Book Multiple Messengers and Challenges in Astroparticle Physics

Download or read book Multiple Messengers and Challenges in Astroparticle Physics written by Roberto Aloisio and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-27 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, designed as a tool for young researchers and graduate students, reviews the main open problems and research lines in various fields of astroparticle physics: cosmic rays, gamma rays, neutrinos, cosmology, and gravitational physics. The opening section discusses cosmic rays of both galactic and extragalactic origin, examining experimental results, theoretical models, and possible future developments. The basics of gamma-ray astronomy are then described, including the detection methods and techniques. Galactic and extragalactic aspects of the field are addressed in the light of recent discoveries with space-borne and ground-based detectors. The review of neutrinos outlines the status of the investigations of neutrino radiation and brings together relevant formulae, estimations, and background information. Three complementary issues in cosmology are examined: observable predictions of inflation in the early universe, effects of dark energy/modified gravity in the large-scale structure of the universe, and neutrinos in cosmology and large-scale structures. The closing section on gravitational physics reviews issues relating to quantum gravity, atomic precision tests, space-based experiments, the strong field regime, gravitational waves, multi-messengers, and alternative theories of gravity.

Book The Standard Model and Beyond

Download or read book The Standard Model and Beyond written by Paul Langacker and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 651 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition of The Standard Model and Beyond presents an advanced introduction to the physics and formalism of the standard model and other non-abelian gauge theories. It provides a solid background for understanding supersymmetry, string theory, extra dimensions, dynamical symmetry breaking, and cosmology. In addition to updating all of the experimental and phenomenological results from the first edition, it contains a new chapter on collider physics; expanded discussions of Higgs, neutrino, and dark matter physics; and many new problems. The book first reviews calculational techniques in field theory and the status of quantum electrodynamics. It then focuses on global and local symmetries and the construction of non-abelian gauge theories. The structure and tests of quantum chromodynamics, collider physics, the electroweak interactions and theory, and the physics of neutrino mass and mixing are thoroughly explored. The final chapter discusses the motivations for extending the standard model and examines supersymmetry, extended gauge groups, and grand unification. Thoroughly covering gauge field theories, symmetries, and topics beyond the standard model, this text equips readers with the tools to understand the structure and phenomenological consequences of the standard model, to construct extensions, and to perform calculations at tree level. It establishes the necessary background for readers to carry out more advanced research in particle physics. Supplementary materials are provided on the author’s website and a solutions manual is available for qualifying instructors.
