Book Measurement of Soot and Flame Temperature Along Three Directions in the Cylinder of a Direct Injection Diesel

Download or read book Measurement of Soot and Flame Temperature Along Three Directions in the Cylinder of a Direct Injection Diesel written by I. Samy Mohammad and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A single cylinder diesel engine with simulated turbocharging was instrumented and run to acquire radiation data at two wavelengths, simultaneously at three locations, along with cylinder pressure data and injection data. The 8 hole injector was indexed to acquire data, at three angles of 0, 11, 22.5 deg from the spray axis. The engine speed was 1500 rpm, the equivalence ratio (based on fuel to oxygen ratio) was 0.47, and the partial pressure of oxygen was 58 kPa for all runs. The radiation data were processed to produce the flame temperature and soot concentration using the two-color theory. The soot concentration and temperature increased in the outward radial direction, with the highest values at the 11 deg location except for near the injector where the highest values were on the axis.

Book Combustion Characteristics of Turbo Charged DISI engines

Download or read book Combustion Characteristics of Turbo Charged DISI engines written by Henrik Hoffmeyer and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2012 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of progress in the development of alternative powertrain systems and energy sources, the internal combustion and all its derivates still are and will be the main powertrain for automobiles. In SI-engines, several approaches compete with each other like the controlled auto ignition (CAI or HCCI), throttle-free load control using variable valvetrains, stratified mixture formation with lean engine operation or highly turbo charged downsizing concepts all combined with gasoline direct injection. The presented work makes a contribution for a deeper understanding of the combustion process of a turbo charged direct injection engine operating with external EGR as well as lean stratified mixture. Using detailed test bench investigations and introducing a new optical measurement tool, the combustion process is described in detail focusing on the occurrence of non-premixed combustion phenomena. The influence of engine parameters like global and local air-/fuel ratio, external EGR and fuel rail pressure as well as the influence of fuel parameters are discussed giving a characterization of the combustion process of stratified engine operation. Furthermore, the influences of non-inert exhaust gas components on engine knock tendency are investigated using external EGR with an EGR catalyst. Opposing the results to numerical analysis, combustion characteristics of turbo charged DISI-engines are presented.

Book Automotive Model Predictive Control

Download or read book Automotive Model Predictive Control written by Luigi Del Re and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-03-11 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Automotive control has developed over the decades from an auxiliary te- nology to a key element without which the actual performances, emission, safety and consumption targets could not be met. Accordingly, automotive control has been increasing its authority and responsibility – at the price of complexity and di?cult tuning. The progressive evolution has been mainly ledby speci?capplicationsandshorttermtargets, withthe consequencethat automotive control is to a very large extent more heuristic than systematic. Product requirements are still increasing and new challenges are coming from potentially huge markets like India and China, and against this ba- ground there is wide consensus both in the industry and academia that the current state is not satisfactory. Model-based control could be an approach to improve performance while reducing development and tuning times and possibly costs. Model predictive control is a kind of model-based control design approach which has experienced a growing success since the middle of the 1980s for “slow” complex plants, in particular of the chemical and process industry. In the last decades, severaldevelopments haveallowedusing these methods also for “fast”systemsandthis hassupporteda growinginterestinitsusealsofor automotive applications, with several promising results reported. Still there is no consensus on whether model predictive control with its high requi- ments on model quality and on computational power is a sensible choice for automotive control.

This book was released on 2002-02-20 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need for manufacturers to meet U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mobile source diesel emissions standards for on-highway light duty and heavy duty vehicles has been the driving force for the control of diesel particulate and NOx emissions reductions. Diesel Particulate Emissions: Landmark Research 1994-2001 contains the latest research and development findings that will help guide engineers to achieve low particulate emissions from future engines. Based on extensive SAE literature from the past seven years, the 45 papers in this book have been selected from the SAE Transactions Journals.

Book Alternative Diesel Fuels

Download or read book Alternative Diesel Fuels written by Daniel J Holt and published by SAE International. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A key topic of many technical discussions has been the development of alternative fuels to power the compression ignition engine. Reasons for this include the desire to reduce the dependency on petroleum-based fuel and, at the same time, to reduce the particulate matter (PM) and NOx emissions. Also, there has been interest generated in the diesel engine because of the reduction in greenhouse gases that has been proposed during the 2008-2012 time frame in Europe and the regulations that affect diesel engines in the United States.

Book Optical Measurements of Soot Particle Size Number Density and Temperature in a Direct Injection Diesel Engine as a Function of Speed and Load

Download or read book Optical Measurements of Soot Particle Size Number Density and Temperature in a Direct Injection Diesel Engine as a Function of Speed and Load written by Dale R. Tree and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In-cylinder measurements of soot particle size, number density and temperature have been made using optical measurements in a direct injection diesel engine. The measurements were made at one location approximately 5 mm long and 1.5 mm wide above the bowl near the head. Two optical techniques were used simultaneously involving light scattering extinction and radiation. An optical probe was designed and mounted in a modified exhaust valve which introduced a beam of light into the cylinder and collected the scattered and radiating light from the soot. The resulting measurements were semi-quantitative, giving an absolute uncertainty on the order of + or - 50% which was attributed mainly to the uncertainty of the optical properties of the soot and the heterogeneous nature of the soot cloud. Measurements at three speeds and three overall equivalence ratios were made. For all of the operating conditions the soot in the measurement volume increased in size to a maximum followed by a rapid decrease. The peak soot diameters were in a range of 30 - 50 nm. Peak soot diameter, soot volume fraction, and soot temperature appeared to increase with equivalence ratio at the measurement location. The results also suggested the soot cloud to be very dense with peak soot volume fraction near 4-6 x 10-6 and thick with a soot cloud thickness approximately 0.4 - 0.6 times the length from the piston to the head.
