Book Measurement of Electron Beam Polarization at the SLC

Download or read book Measurement of Electron Beam Polarization at the SLC written by and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The polarimeters needed to monitor and measure electron beam polarization at the Stanford Linear Collider are discussed. Two types of polarimeters, are to be used. The first is based on the spin dependent elastic scattering of photons from high energy electrons. The second utilizes the spin dependence of elastic electron-electron scattering. The plans of the SLC polarization group to measure and monitor electron beam polarization are discussed. A brief discussion of the physics and the demands it imposes on beam polarization measurements is presented. The Compton polarimeter and the essential characteristics of two Moeller polarimeters are presented. (LEW).

Book First Results from SLD with Polarized Electron Beam at SLC

Download or read book First Results from SLD with Polarized Electron Beam at SLC written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The SLAC Linear Collider (SLC) has been modified to collide a longitudinally polarized electron beam with the unpolarized positron beam. We review the beginning of polarized beam running at the SLC, and report on the measurement of the left-right cross section asymmetry (A[sub LR]) made with a sample of 10,224 Z decays collected over the course of the 1992 run. The average beam polarization for this set of Z decays was 22.4 [plus minus] 0.6%(syst.). A[sub LR] was measured to be 0.100 [plus minus] 0.044(stat.) [plus minus] 0.004(syst.). From this measurement, the weak mixing angle defined at the Z boson pole is determined to be sin[sup 2][theta][sup eff][sub W] = 0.2378 [plus minus] 0.0056 [plus minus] 0.0005.

Book Polarization Correlations in the SLC Final Focus

Download or read book Polarization Correlations in the SLC Final Focus written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the SLC, the electron beam polarization (P) is measured by a Compton polarimeter downstream of the Interaction Point. This measurement averages over the entire beam distribution and must be corrected for various correlations to calculate the luminosity (L) weighted polarization. Because the spin rotation in the ARC is energy dependent, off energy particles have lower polarization. These particles may also be poorly focused and contribute less luminosity due to the higher order chromatic optics of the final focus. The small vertical [beta] function at the interaction point also causes an hour-glass effect, where particles at the head and tail of the bunch have less luminosity. Since there is an energy-z correlation due to the compensation of longitudinal wakefields in the linac, these particles may also have lower polarization. The correlations are: z -- E (linac), E -- P (ARC), z -- L (hour-glass) and E -- L (chromaticity). The contributions from the z -- E and z -- L correlations are discussed.

Book First Measurement of the Left right Z Cross Section Asymmetry in Polarized Ee Collisions at the SLC

Download or read book First Measurement of the Left right Z Cross Section Asymmetry in Polarized Ee Collisions at the SLC written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The SLAC Linear Collider (SLC) has recently been upgraded to produce, accelerate, and collide a spin polarized electron beam. The average beam polarization during the 1992 run was (22.4 ± 0.7)%. The SLD Collaboration used the polarized beam to perform the first measurement of the left-right cross section asymmetry (A{sub LR}) for Z boson production by ee− collisions. The measurement was performed at a center-of-mass energy of 91.55 GeV with a sample of 10,224 Z decays. The measured value of A{sub LR} is 0.100 ± 0.044(stat.) ± O.004(syst.) which determines the effective weak mixing angle to be sin2?{sub W}{sup eff} = 0.2378 ± 0.0056(stat.) ± 0.0005(syst.).

Book The Polarized Electron Source of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center

Download or read book The Polarized Electron Source of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Stanford Linear Accelerator has been running with polarized electrons both in the collider (SLC) mode and in the fixed target mode. The accelerators polarized electron source is based on a thin, strained GaAs photocathode, which is held at a negative high voltage and illuminated by a Titanium Sapphire laser. The reliability of the source was better than 95% during the eight-month-long 1993 SLC run. A beam polarization of 63% was measured by the SLD experiment at the SLC interaction point in the 1993 data run. The fixed-target experiment E143 measured a beam polarization of 85% in its 1993--94 run. These polarization measurements, made at high energy, are in good agreement with measurements made at low energy on a calibrated Mott polarimeter. The higher beam polarization in the fixed target experiment is due to a thinner, more highly strained GaAs photocathode than had been used earlier, and to the experiment's low beam current requirements. The SLC is now running with the high polarization photocathode. Details of the source, and experience with the high polarization strained GaAs photocathodes on the accelerator in the current SLC run, will be presented.

Book Precision Electroweak Physics with the SLD SLC The Left right Polarization Asymmetry

Download or read book Precision Electroweak Physics with the SLD SLC The Left right Polarization Asymmetry written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following a brief review of a commonly used general framework for the analysis of radiative corrections and possible new physics, the recent precision results from the SLD/SLC are discussed and used to test the standard electroweak model. In the 1993 SLD/SLC run, the SLD recorded 50,000 Z events produced by the collision of longitudinally polarized electrons on unpolarized positrons at a center-of-mass energy of 91.26 GeV. The luminosity-weighted average polarization of the SLC electron beam was (63.0 [plus-minus] 1.1)%. We measure the left-right cross-section asymmetry in Z boson production, A[sub LR], to be 0.1628 [plus-minus] 0.0071 (stat) [plus-minus] 0.0028 (syst) which determines the effective weak mixing angle to be sin[sup 2] [theta][sub W][sup eff] = 0.2292 [plus-minus] 0.0009 (stat) [plus-minus] 0.0004 (syst). When averaged with our 1992 result, we obtain sin[sup 2] [theta][sub W][sup eff] = 0.2294 [plus-minus] 0. 0010. This result differs from analogous LEP results at the level of about 2.5 [sigma]. The world averages of electroweak data are comfortably in agreement with the standard model.

Book Physics with Polarization at the SLD

Download or read book Physics with Polarization at the SLD written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The SLD detector is nearing completion and will start physics-quality data-taking at the SLC in 1991 with a longitudinally polarized electron beam and unpolarized positron beam. The current status of the detector is reviewed and the rich program of physics measurements possible with polarization and the SLD detector is briefly presented. In particular, the left-right polarization asymmetry, A{sub LR}, will be a unique measurement for the next few years and will allow tight bounds to be set upon the mass of the top quark. 14 refs., 1 fig.

Download or read book Polarized Electrons written by Joachim Kessler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid growth of the subject since the first edition ten years ago has made it necessary to rewrite the greater part of the book. Except for the introductory portion and the section on Mott scattering, the book has been completely revised. In Chap. 3, sections on polarization violating reflection symmetry, on resonance scattering, and on inelastic processes have been added. Chapter 4 has been rewritten, taking account of the numerous novel results obtained in exchange scattering. Chapter 5 includes the recent discoveries on photoelectron polarization produced by unpolarized radiation with unpolarized targets and on Auger-electron polarization. In Chap. 6, a further discussion of relativistic polarization phenomena has been added to the book. The immense growth of polarization studies with solids and surfaces required an extension and new presentation of Chap. 7. All but one section of Chap. 8 has been rewritten and a detailed treatment of polarization analysis has been included. Again, a nearly comprehensive treatment has been attempted. Even so, substantial selectivity among the wide range of available material has been essential in order to accomplish a compact presentation. The reference list, selected along the same lines as in the first edition, is meant to lead the reader through the literature giving a guide for finding further references. I want to express my indebtedness to a number of people whose help has been invaluable.

Download or read book High Energy Spin Physics written by Karl-Heinz Althoff and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 9th International Symposium on High Energy Spin Physics, held in Bonn, 6-15 September 1990, attracted 280 participants from 16 countries. This meet ing covered not only fundamental experimental and theoretical spin phenomena but also technological developments in polarized beams and targets. For the first time intermediate energy spin physics with electron machines was discussed extensively. Highlights included the work on polarized high energy electron beams at LEP and TRISTAN and the failure of the standard model in connection with spin phenomena, in particular the growth of the spin asymmetry in violent proton-proton scattering. Also the presentation of different models in con nection with the still-unsolved 'proton spin crisis' and the proposals for four different experiments to determine the spin structure functions caused lively and sometimes controversial discussions. The Organizing Committee would like to thank all speakers for their excel lent talks, the conveners for the organization of the parallel sessions, and the International Advisory Committee for their advice. Four workshops preceded the symposium. 160 participants, among them many young physicists, discussed mainly technological spin problems. These papers are published in separate proceedings. We gratefully acknowledge the enthusiastic help of the members of our institute in preparing and running the conference and the workshops, especially Mrs. D. FaSbender, Mrs. E. Wendorf, Mrs. J. Wetzel, and Dr. U.Idschok.
