Book Low Strain Dynamic Characteristics of Soils with the Downhole Seismic Piezocone Penetrometer

Download or read book Low Strain Dynamic Characteristics of Soils with the Downhole Seismic Piezocone Penetrometer written by RG. Campanella and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In-situ soil testing procedures with the downhole seismic piezocone have been under continuous development at the University of British Columbia since 1980. Currently, this rapid and cost effective tool can be used to measure the average dynamic soil properties of shear wave velocity as well as damping with depth along with the interpretation of detailed stratigraphy and geotechnical parameters. The purpose of this paper is to present, in a simple and practical way, the latest seismic piezocone procedures for testing and signal processing to determine low strain damping properties of soil in combination with the usual shear wave velocity measurements. The signal processing for shear wave velocity determination includes the phase velocity technique which gives shear wave velocity as a function of frequency. For the determination of the small strain damping ratio, the spectral ratio slope method is used. Typical results are presented and discussed for a site dominated by peat, organic soils and soft clays, all normally consolidated. Typical results for a sandy site are also presented.

Book The Penetrometer and Soil Exploration

Download or read book The Penetrometer and Soil Exploration written by G. Sanglerat and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Penetrometer and Soil Exploration: Interpretation of Penetration Diagrams—Theory presents the many uses of the penetrometer for investigating soil conditions. Testing methods include the following: (1) in situ load tests on full-scale foundations; (2) laboratory testing of undisturbed samples, and (3) in situ testing of soils. The book regards the advantages of using the penetrometer as a handy tool in drilling and sampling. The text emphasizes that the investigator should never rely entirely on the analogy or the extrapolation of information pertaining to a nearby site. The text describes the different shapes of the penetrometer diagrams obtained from tests in homogeneous cohesionless soil, as well as the significance of the embedment of a pile into the bearing stratum for deep foundation designs. The paper discusses the De Beer theory, Kerisel's theory, and the theory developed at the Delft Laboratory of Soil Mechanics. The laboratory determines the maximum soil pressure and the corresponding embedment of the pile. According to Professor L'Herminier, "the bearing capacity of a pile may be determined...from laboratory tests on soil samples, the other by extrapolating penetrometer data." The book is suitable for structural engineers, civil engineers, geologists, architects, and students of soil mechanics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Apostle Paul expected the vast majority of the recipients of his letters to hear, not read, them. He structured his compositions for the ear rather than the eye. Pauline audiences would hear clues to meaning and structure because they had learned to communicate in a world where those clues were essential to understanding. Recognizable structures and patterns were essential for listeners to organize what they heard, to follow, to predict and to remember the flow of communication. Oral Biblical Criticism examines Paul's Epistle to the Philippians in light of recent study of oral principles of composition and interpretation.

Book Normalization and Prediction of Geotechnical Properties Using the Cone Penetrometer Test CPT

Download or read book Normalization and Prediction of Geotechnical Properties Using the Cone Penetrometer Test CPT written by Richard Scott Olsen and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research was to develop techniques for (1) stress normalization of CPT measurements (and geotechnical properties) and (2) CPT prediction of geotechnical properties using cone and sleeve friction resistance values. Stress normalization allows a variable geotechnical property to be reduced to an equivalent value at a standard confining stress. A new concept, the Stress Focus, was identified which provides a basis for understanding soil strength as a function of confining stress. This study demonstrated that sand friction angles for different initial relative densities converge to a Stress Focus at high confining stress (approximately 100 atm), where the strength behavior is similar to that of a sedimentary rock. Dilation of dense sands decreases with increased confining stress until the Stress Focus is reached, as confirmed using historic high pressure triaxial test data as well with CPT measurements from laboratory chamber tests and uniform soil layers. The paths of convergence to the Stress Focus are exponentially related to confining stress and are the basis for development of CPT cone and sleeve friction resistance normalization techniques. The overburden stress at the Stress Focus is soil type dependent. The stress exponent for SPT normalization was shown to be equal to the CPT derived stress exponent. CPT correlations to geotechnical properties were established using both CPT cone resistance and friction ratio. Book Measuring in Situ Mechanical Properties of Pavement Subgrade Soils

Download or read book Measuring in Situ Mechanical Properties of Pavement Subgrade Soils written by David E. Newcomb and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1999 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis report will be of interest to pavement and geotechnical design and research engineers, geologists and engineering geologists, and related laboratory personnel. It describes the current practice for measuring in situ mechanical properties of pavement subgrade soils. The tests conducted to measure the mechanical properties of soil strength and stiffness are the primary topics, and these are discussed in the context of design procedures, factors affecting mechanical properties, and the variability of measurements. Information for the synthesis was collected by surveying U.S., Canadian, and selected European transportation agencies and by conducting a literature search. This TRB report provides information on existing and emerging technologies for static and dynamic, and destructive and nondestructive testing for measuring in situ mechanical properties of pavement subgrade soils. Correlations between in situ and laboratory tests are presented. The effects of existing layers on the measurement of subgrade properties, and soil spatial and seasonal variability are discussed. Most importantly, the use of soil properties in pavement design and evaluation are explained. New applications or improvements to existing test methods to support the use of mechanistic/stochastic-based pavement design procedures are also explained.
