Book Time Dependent CP Violation Measurements

Download or read book Time Dependent CP Violation Measurements written by Markus Röhrken and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-17 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes a high-quality, high-precision method for the data analysis of an interesting elementary particle reaction. The data was collected at the Japanese B-meson factory KEKB with the Belle detector, one of the most successful large-scale experiments worldwide. CP violation is a subtle quantum effect that makes the world look different when simultaneously left and right and matter and antimatter are exchanged. This being a prerequisite for our own world to have developed from the big bang, there are only a few experimental indications of such effects, and their detection requires very intricate techniques. The discovery of CP violation in B meson decays garnered Kobayashi and Maskawa, who had predicted these findings as early as 1973, the 2008 Nobel prize in physics. This thesis describes in great detail what are by far the best measurements of branching ratios and CP violation parameters in two special reactions with two charm mesons in the final state. It presents an in-depth but accessible overview of the theory, phenomenology, experimental setup, data collection, Monte Carlo simulations, (blind) statistical data analysis, and systematic uncertainty studies.

Book Measurement of CP Violation Parameters in B Quark Decays to Charm Anticharm Down Quarks Exclusive Decays at the BABAR Experiment

Download or read book Measurement of CP Violation Parameters in B Quark Decays to Charm Anticharm Down Quarks Exclusive Decays at the BABAR Experiment written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The BABAR experiment at SLAC provides an opportunity for measurement of CP violation in B decays. A measurement of time-dependent CP violating asymmetries using exclusive B meson decays where the b quark decays to c{bar c}d (including B° 2!D*D*− and B° 2!D*{sup ±}D{sup {-+}} decays) is presented here. This is the first measurement of CP violation in a mode sensitive to the Unitarity Triangle parameter sin2[beta] outside of decays containing charmonium. It provides a comparison to measurements of sin2[beta] using b 2!c{bar c}s, and permits an observation into potential new physics sources of CP violation, such as supersymmetry, via differences between these measurements and those of B° 2!J/[psi] K{sub S}° as statistics of reconstructed neutral B decays to D{sup (*)+} D{sup (*)-} increase. The measured value of the time-dependent CP violating asymmetries are: S = 0.38 ± 0.88(stat) ± 0.12(syst) and C = -0.30 ± 0.50(stat) ± 0.13(syst) for B° 2!D*− D; S = -0.43 ± 1.41(stat) ± 0.23(syst) and C = 0.53 ± 0.74(stat) ± 0.15(syst) for B° 2!D*+ D−; and S = -0.05 ± 0.45(stat) ± 0.05(syst) and C = 0.12 ± 0.30(stat) {+-} 0.05(syst) for B° 2!D*− D+; where S corresponds to CP violation in the interference of mixing and decay and C corresponds to CP violation in decay.

Book Measurements of Time Dependent CP Violation in Radiative B Decays at BaBar

Download or read book Measurements of Time Dependent CP Violation in Radiative B Decays at BaBar written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors present measurements of the CP-violation parameters S and C for the radiative decays B° →?°K{sub S}°? and B° →?K{sub S}°?; for B →?K? they also measure the branching fractions and for B →?K+? the time-integrated charge asymmetry A{sub ch}. The data, collected with the BABAR detector at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, represent 467 x 106 B{bar B} pairs produced in e+e− annihilation at the PEP-II collider. In this summary they present an updated measurement of the time-dependent CP asymmetry in B° →?°K{sub S}°? decay mode and the first measurement of the time-dependent CP asymmetry in B° →?K{sub S}°? decay mode. Hadronic corrections in B° →?°K{sub S}°? decay mode might permit S to be as large as ± 0.1. Such corrections and NP effects could depend on m(?°K{sub S}°), so they split the data into two parts: the K*(892) region with 0.8

Book B Physics And Cp Violation Proceedings Of The 2nd International Conference

Download or read book B Physics And Cp Violation Proceedings Of The 2nd International Conference written by Thomas E Browder and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1998-04-04 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CP violation is one of the most subtle effects in the Standard Model of particle physics and may be the first clue to the physics that lies beyond. Charge conjugation, C, and parity, P, are symmetries of particle interactions. C corresponds to the operation of replacing a particle by its antiparticle, while P is the operation of mirror reflection. Before 1956, it was believed that these were also symmetries of the interactions of elementary particles. In 1956, C S Wu found evidence for P violation in the weak interaction. Theorists proposed that the combination of CP would be a symmetry of the weak interaction. In 1964, Christenson, Cronin, Fitch and Turlay found the first evidence for the violation of CP symmetry in the decays of kaons.Although Kobayashi and Maskawa then showed how the Standard Model can accommodate the observed CP violation, Wolfenstein pointed out that it is also possible that there is a new interaction in addition to the usual four, called the superweak interaction, which is responsible for the asymmetry. To test this idea, the observation of a different type of asymmetry, called direct CP violation, is required; in the kaon sector, very precise measurements of the ratio of kaon decay rates are necessary. In B decay modes where a second order weak process whimisically named “penguin” interferes with another suppressed, first order “tree” amplitude, it may also be possible to observe these direct CP-violating effects.B physics and CP violation is now one of the major growth areas in high energy physics. Nearly every major high energy physics laboratory now has a project underway to observe the large CP asymmetries expected in the B sector and to test the consistency of the Standard Model. The unitarity of the Kobayashi-Maskawa mixing matrix in the Standard Model implies the existence of three phases, called alpha, beta and gamma, which can be determined by the measurements of CP asymmetries in B decays. About 200 participants gathered in Hawaii in March 1997 to discuss the progress in the field, and this important book constitutes the proceedings of that conference.

Book CP Violation in B s 0 J psi phi Decays

Download or read book CP Violation in B s 0 J psi phi Decays written by Sabato Leo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-24 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis reports on the final measurement of the flavor-mixing phase in decays of strange-bottom mesons (B_s) into J/psi and phi mesons performed in high-energy proton-antiproton collisions recorded by the Collider Experiment at Fermilab. Interference occurs between direct decays and decays following virtual particle-antiparticle transitions (B_s-antiB_s). The phase difference between transition amplitudes (“mixing phase”) is observable and extremely sensitive to contributions from non-standard-model particles or interactions that may be very hard to detect otherwise – a fact that makes the precise measurement of the B_s mixing phase one of the most important goals of particle physics. The results presented include a precise determination of the mixing phase and a suite of other important supplementary results. All measurements are among the most precise available from a single experiment and provide significantly improved constraints on the phenomenology of new particles and interactions.

This book was released on 1993 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fermilab experiments E731, E773, E799, and E832 are a series of experiments to investigate the physics of CP violation, CPT violation, and rare decays of the neutral kaon system. E731 finished data taking in 1988, during past year the full data set analysis was completed and yielded ([var epsilon][prime]/[var epsilon])[sub 2[pi]]=(7.4 [plus minus] 5.2 [stat] [plus minus] 2.9 [syst]) [times] 10[sup [minus]4] . The value favors a high top ark mass value within the Standard Model. E773 tests CPT violation by determining ([Delta][phi])[sub 2[pi]] with an accuracy of about 0.5[sup 0]. Data were taken during the last Fermilab Fixed Target run period between September and November 1991. It is anticipated the data analysis will be finished within a year. E799, with the primary goal of observing direct Cp Violation via searching for the rare decay K[sub L][yields] [pi][sup 0] l [sup +]l[sup [minus]] (where l = e, [mu] [nu]) took test data between November 1991 and January 1992 (Phase 1). Download or read book Measurement of CP Violation Observables and Parameters for the Decays B pm to DK pm written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We study the decay B− → DK*− using a sample of 379 x 106?(4S) → B{bar B} events collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II B-factory. We perform a 'GLW' analysis where the D meson decays into either a CP-even (CP+) eigenstate (KK−,?+?−), CP-odd (CP- ) eigenstate (K{sub S}°?°, K{sub S}°?, K{sub S}°?) or a non-CP state (K−?+). We also analyze D meson decays into K+?− from a Cabibbo-favored {bar D}° decay or doubly suppressed D° decay ('ADS' analysis). We measure observables that are sensitive to the CKM angle?: the partial-rate charge asymmetries A{sub CP±}, the ratios R{sub CP±} of the B-decay branching fractions in CP± and non-CP decay, the ratio R{sub ADS} of the charge-averaged branching fractions, and the charge asymmetry A{sub ADS} of the ADS decays: A{sub CP+} = 0.09 ± 0.13 ± 0.06, A{sub CP-} = -0.23 ± 0.21 ± 0.07, R{sub CP+} = 2.17 ± 0.35 ± 0.09, R{sub CP-} = 1.03 ± 0.27 ± 0.13, R{sub ADS} = 0.066 ± 0.031 ± 0.010, and A{sub ADS} = -0.34 {+-} 0.43 {+-} 0.16, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. Combining all the measurements and using a frequentist approach yields the magnitude of the ratio between the Cabibbo-suppressed and favored amplitudes, r{sub B} = 0.31 with a one (two) sigma confidence level interval of [0.24, 0.38] ([0.17, 0.43]). The value r{sub B} = 0 is excluded at the 3.3 sigma level. A similar analysis excludes values of? in the intervals [0, 7]{sup o}, [55, 111]{sup o}, and [175, 180]{sup o} ([85, 99]{sup o}) at the one (two) sigma confidence level.

Download or read book CP conserving and CP violating Properties in Semileptonic Bs Decays with the D0 Experiment written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A search for CP violation has been performed in a sample of semileptonic B{sub s} decays corresponding to approximately 5 fb−1 of data collected by the D0 detector in Run II at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. A time-dependent fit to the distributions of B{sub s} candidates yields the flavor-specific asymmetry as a{sub fs}{sup s} = [-1.7 ± 9.1(stat){sub -2.3}{sup +1.2}(syst)] x 10−3, corresponding to the most precise measurement to date for this CP violation parameter. Furthermore a search for the semi-inclusive process B{sub s} to D{sub s}{sup (*)}D{sub s}{sup (*)} has been performed on a data sample of 2.8 fb−1. 26.6 ± 8.4 signal events are observed with a significance of 3.2 standard deviations above background, leading to a branching ratio of 0.035 ± 0.010(stat) ± 0.011(syst). Under certain theoretical assumptions, these double-charm final states saturate CP-even eigenstates in the B{sub s} decays, resulting in a width difference of [Delta][Lambda]{sub s}{sup CP}/[Lambda]{sub s} = 0.072 ± 0.021(stat) ± 0.022(syst).
