Book Packing Grandma s China

Download or read book Packing Grandma s China written by Lana M. Tatom and published by BalboaPress. This book was released on 2013-09-30 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Somewhere along the way in life, you start to listen to that little voice. We are all on this journey together, growing, learning, and changing. As I stood in the kitchen of my dream home, looking out on the still water of the pond, I cried. Warm, salty tears streamed down my face as I told myself I could do this. Just start with one box; dont get overwhelmed. Pack one box; stay focused. I started packing Grandmas china first. As I packed the china set, a flood of memories came of the countless times I had carefully wrapped up each piece and placed them into the box. It was at that moment that I decided to write about this beautiful set of china, all the experiences and lessons I have learned along my journey. It is through my grandmothers journey that I have found my own strength and freedom. Twenty years and thirteen moves later, the china is the only set of dishes I own. When was the last time you used your china? What are you waiting for? Dont leave it locked up, waiting for a special occasion. Make today the special occasion you have been waiting for. In loving memory of my Grandma, Veronica Billetz (January 13, 1922-December 13, 2009)

Book excerpt: In Skills ManiaBob Davis argues passionately that the emphasis in the secondary school classroom must shift from a technocratic, skills-based approach, to teaching and discussion that focuses on real, substantive issues. He also calls for a new emphasis on the teaching of history, a practice that has been sadly lacking in recent years. Two central qualities warm up this book: first the story is told through the author's own teaching, and second, the author presents us with an original and frank point of view. This is a stiring, engaged, and practical book.

Book Unintended Consequences

Download or read book Unintended Consequences written by Janet Kay Swain and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unintended Consequences is a story of survival for one small child plagued by the actions of others. The authors perilous journey through experiences speaks to her resilience and shows where joy was felt in the shadows. As a child, Janet would turn to drugs and alcohol. As an adult, filled with guilt and shame, Janet would find herself tied to her alcoholism and addiction and unable to see any way out. A mother at 16 and again at 18, she worked to be the best mother she could. Getting to her bottom, she would go from being a professional working woman, with a nice house and set financially, to jail, and ultimately to homeless and alone. It started when she was young. Those things that should not happen. Sexually abused by her grandfather and other male characters, beaten and berated by her grandmother, Janet endured. There were relatives who knew things about Janets life, but with hands tied, metered out small amounts of kindness. Men took advantage of her inability to tell right from wrong. Janet became a runner. Trying to escape all the bad things and the feelings they brought her. She never got far, being pulled back into the darkness of her mind. Grandmother, being the main caregiver, provided little in the way of affection or guidance. Grandmother was haunted by her own childhood. She was forced to take in two of her grandchildren when no one else wanted them. Janets brother was born sickly and would need constant care in infancy and childhood. Caring for her brother, Grandmother had little time left for Janet, the healthy child. Grandmothers resentments and her own pain boiled over onto Janet. Grandpa, although sexually abusing, was kind, if not understanding of how Grandmother treated her. As the father figure, Grandpas actions further confused and fractured an already fragile mind. An older man would abduct Janet from her home when she was fifteen. Keeping her hostage for nearly two years. On the run, facing prison, he took Janet across the country and back. He would deal out beatings and abuses. Janet would become brainwashed, living in fear every day, believing the things he told her about herself. It would be a harrowing escape for her and her infant son from this madman. Unintended Consequences concludes with a way out and the people who were there to help her. The story sets up how change began and how the ability to change grew inside. The book brings readers into the world of recovery from the traumas, abuses, and addictions.

Book excerpt: "Any attempt to reckon with Cuba's torturous twentieth century will have to take into account Arenas's monumental work ... an essential human testimony, joyful and enraged, a triumph of conscience." -- Garth Greenwell The acclaimed memoir of queer Cuban author Reinaldo Arenas chronicling his tumultuous yet luminary life, from his impoverished upbringing in Cuba to his imprisonment at the hands of a Communist regime The astonishing memoir by visionary Cuban writer Reinaldo Arenas "is a book above all about being free," said The New York Review of Books--sexually, politically, artistically. Arenas recounts a stunning odyssey from his poverty-stricken childhood in rural Cuba and his adolescence as a rebel fighting for Castro, through his supression as a writer, imprisonment as a homosexual, his flight from Cuba via the Mariel boat lift, and his subsequent life and the events leading to his death in New York. In what The Miami Herald calls his "deathbed ode to eroticism," Arenas breaks through the code of secrecy and silence that protects the privileged in a state where homosexuality is a political crime. Recorded in simple, straightforward prose, this is the true story of the Kafkaesque life and world re-created in the author's acclaimed novels.
