Book excerpt: Me and Burnice is a collection of true stories that applauds growing up and everyday events in the 1940s. Abounding in humor, it uses laugh-aloud narrative to touch on the gentleness and richness of mankind. Told in a way the reader can be there and say, "That happened to me just like that" or "I identified with it all the way it was so easy to read." It chronicles the adventures of two boys, how they grow and entertain themselves, and expand the limits of their imaginations. Although it was a simpler life they always went for the gusto.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These lessons and stories of truths take root in Eli, and as he grows into a young adult, he begins to place his thoughts onto paper in the form of controversial poems and creative writings. Many tales given him by Mama Bee of having slave ancestry, including one from whom his own name, Eli, was derived from causes our main character to ponder deeply, so deep in fact that while cleaning the attic of his great-grandmother Glenda's home, he comes across photos from the distant past. Unfortunately, the rickety old stool that he sat upon gave way, and Eli suffered a fall through the floor and onto the glass kitchen table below. When Eli awoke from unconsciousness, he finds himself in the eighteen hundreds being helped to a shack belonging to his Mama Bee's great-grandparents, Eli Sr. and his common-law wife, Burnice. And now our journey begins. 96
Download or read book Breathing Space written by Heidi Neumark and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2012-09-04 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a song of Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving for the people whose courageous witness has transfigured this community-and this pastor. Thanksgiving for the gift of these stories that cry out to be told and retold because in the midst of death they rise to fill the air with life. Breathing Space is the story of a young woman, Heidi Neumark, and the Hispanic and African-American Lutheran church-aptly named Transfiguration-that took a chance calling on a pastor from a starkly different background. Despite living and working in a milieu of overwhelming poverty and violence, Neumark and the congregation encounter even more powerful forces of hope and renewal. This is the story of a church and a community creating space for new life and breath in a place where children suffer the highest asthma rates in the nation. It's also the story of a young woman-working, raising her children, and struggling for spiritual breathing space. Through poignant, intimate stories, Neumark charts her journey alongside her parishioners as pastor, church, and community grow in wisdom and together experience transformation.

Download or read book Appointment at Amalfi written by Ian Callinan and published by Boolarong Press. This book was released on 2014-11-13 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A world-famous and wealthy Australian film director, Roderick Lily, lingers on through the unfashionable off-season in beautiful Amalfi near Capri. He has become melancholic. He has left a disquieting mystery behind him in the Gold Coast Studios because he has left his greatest and his final film incomplete. Lily, uncharacteristically, sells an exclusive interview to an illustrated gossip magazine in London for a huge fee. What are his motives? There are scandalous rumours about the bizarre death of his wife on a fashionable Sydney beach decades ago. He now promises that he will reveal the truth about this scandal. But frustratingly for the young London journo, he first leads her on a tantalizing guessing game through the plots of his major films. He procrastinates, he philosophises. He insists on taking her around historic Herculaneum. In the meantime, the corrupt financiers of Lily’s final film may have hired a hit-man. They will do anything to stop the film being completed and released. A near fatal boating accident for Lily and the journo off Sorrento is the trigger for a dramatic crescendo. There is a sudden flashback to the Sydney beach thirty years ago and a horrific scene is re-enacted. This is a whodunit with an existential twist in the tail. In the end Callinan creates a drama of illicit love and crippling remorse. Beneath the glittering surface of fame and triumph lurk a fatal error and an unforgiveable sin. There is a justice that is beyond the law and it comes from within.

Through humorous autobiographical anecdote adventures, she shares the mucky, sometimes messy mundane bits and pieces of her troubled yesterdays. "What a hoot! I especially liked the wet pants one." "I enjoyed story number one-the red thunderbird, the boots, and the tongue that never got a chance to lick! ...You have a way of lighting up a room and making sour pickles like me smile. That's special." "I laughed so hard reading your true life adventures. Maybe because I know you a little, but I can just picture you doing this stuff! Keep writing. My only complaint is that they are too short."
