Book excerpt: The Palm Beach PI is on the case of a corpse conspiracy. “Lawrence Sanders has honed a voice for Archy McNally that is wonderfully infectious” (The Washington Times). Business is booming at Whitcomb Funeral Homes in southern Florida. Called in to investigate this inexplicable uptick, Palm Beach private investigator Archy McNally finds himself in the middle of a most unusual case. In the past six months, Whitcomb has shipped out five hundred dead bodies. Why are so many caskets leaving the Sunshine State and being airlifted to New York, Boston, and Chicago? And why did Whitcomb’s comely comptroller come to McNally & Son in the first place? Further complicating McNally’s life are his air-headed buddy, Binky Watrous, who wants to be his private-eye assistant, and his faithful love, Connie Garcia, who’s got her spies when it comes to McNally’s weakness for the ladies. Murder worthy of the headline Death-styles of the Rich and Famous add to McNally’s tribulations. And the next set of human remains could be his.

Book Sexual Intimacy and Gender Identity Fraud

Download or read book Sexual Intimacy and Gender Identity Fraud written by Alex Sharpe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a legal and political intervention into a contemporary debate concerning the appropriateness of sexual offence prosecutions brought against young gender non-conforming people for so-called ‘gender identity fraud'. It comes down squarely against prosecution. To that end, it offers a series of principled objections based both on liberal principles, and arguments derived from queer and feminist theories. Thus prosecution will be challenged as criminal law overreach and as a spectacular example of legal inconsistency, but also as indicative of a failure to grasp the complexity of sexual desire and its disavowal. In particular, the book will think through the concepts of consent, harm and deception and their legal application to these specific forms of intimacy. In doing so, it will reveal how cisnormativity frames the legal interpretation of each and how this serves to preclude more marginal perspectives. Beyond law, the book takes up the ethical challenge of the non-disclosure of gender history. Rather than dwelling on this omission, it argues that we ought to focus on a cisgender demand to know as the proper object of ethical inquiry. Finally, and as an act of legal and ethical re-imagination, the book offers a queer counter-judgment to R v McNally, the only case involving a gender non-conforming defendant, so far, to have come before the Court of Appeal.

Book excerpt: DNA profiling—commonly known as DNA fingerprinting—is often heralded as unassailable criminal evidence, a veritable “truth machine” that can overturn convictions based on eyewitness testimony, confessions, and other forms of forensic evidence. But DNA evidence is far from infallible. Truth Machine traces the controversial history of DNA fingerprinting by looking at court cases in the United States and United Kingdom beginning in the mid-1980s, when the practice was invented, and continuing until the present. Ultimately, Truth Machine presents compelling evidence of the obstacles and opportunities at the intersection of science, technology, sociology, and law.

Book excerpt: Family ties ensnare Lawrence Sanders’s Archy McNally, “a raffish combination of Dashiell Hammett’s Nick Charles and P. G. Wodehouse’s Bertie Wooster” (The New York Times Book Review). Bestselling author Sabrina Wright wants dapper detective Archy McNally to find her husband, who vanished while looking for her MIA daughter—it may seem like a simple case, but McNally knows it’s never that easy. Thirty-year-old Gillian Wright ran off to find her birth father, opening a Pandora’s box of scandalous revelations the tabloids can’t resist. It seems that Sabrina’s life was a bigger fiction than her bodice-ripping romances. Before her story is over, three powerful men with damning secrets could be outed . . . and murder will be the denouement. As McNally stumbles on one cover-up after another, he has one last chance to catch a killer who will stop at nothing to protect his name.
