Book excerpt: This is a genealogical history of the McKneely families of South Carolina, Georgia and Louisiana. There are two branches to this Scotch-Irish family with this unique spelling. One that migrated from South Carolina to Georgia and then on to Texas and other parts of the expanding United States of America. Then there is the branch that left South Carolina in the late 1700s and early 1800s with other families and settled in what at the time was West Florida. This area then was taken into the United States of America with the purchase of Florida from Spain and then became a part of Louisiana. The Louisiana branch resided in the Parishes called the Florida Parishes and stayed close to the area until after the First World War when the family began to migrate into other parts of the United States. You will find in this book two parts. One part covers the McKneely family that migrated to the Florida Parishes of Louisiana and the Second part that covers the McKneely family that first migrated to Georgia and then to Oklahoma and Texas. There is speculation but no proof that the two lines come from the common immigrant ancestor James McNealy with various spellings of McNealy. Look at the information and decide for yourself whether or not two lines could adopt a common spelling change, come from South Carolina and have common names and not be related to the common ancestor attached to the Louisiana McKneely clan. I have attempted to include as much detail as possible about each person. Personal stories are the spice of a genealogical work. I have included as many as possible and included them without edit. I am not a politically correct family historian. There may be some factually correct material that you may not like or that someone might tell you is not correct. Please read this account with the times and culture in mind as that is what makes the story a good one. Do not try to impress yourself on the story but put yourself into the times and places.

Download or read book My Dark Side of the NFL written by Keith Alvin McCants and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-11-10 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I heard all about fame and fortune as a star linebacker playing for my beloved Alabama Crimson Tide. I suited up with Derek Thomas, the best damn defensive end that I've ever seen. We broke our backs and dripped our sweat on the same set of stadium steps. I was an elite linebacker from Alabama. Hell, that's damn near royalty when it comes to football. I'm not sure when disappointment replaced excitement for me. Maybe it was on draft day 1990, when I believed I should have gone off of the board first, or maybe it was on the sidelines, while a NFL coach towered over my injured body and screamed at me to get back into the game. All I know for sure is that it left and there was a giant gaping hole just waiting to be filled by something. That something for me took the form of drugs. Drugs that I had never even heard of before until I stepped inside of a NFL locker room. My assent on the path to fame and fortune was fast, like a missile being launched into space. The decline was much slower, like a snowball rolling down a mountain. It grew larger and larger in size and speed. Eventually it reached the bottom of the mountain and crashed leaving my dreams smashed and broken. This is they story about my journey into the NFL, but it is much more than that. This is a story about a kid, who lost his innocence long before he was a multimillionaire. It's about secret conversations and pill lines. It's about playing injured and seeing my friends lost to the newfound phenomenon of CTE. Dreams are born and dreams die, and sometimes like in my case, they are stolen. I'm Keith McCants and this is my story.

Download or read book St John s Church Lafayette Square written by Richard F. Grimmett and published by Hillcrest Publishing Group. This book was released on 2009 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. John's Episcopal Church, Lafayette Square, in Washington, DC is one of the most unique churches in the United States. A National Historic Landmark, located just north of Lafayette Square, and in clear view of the White House, it has witnessed the presence within its walls of more notable civilian and military leaders of the United States than any other church in the nation. Apart from the White House, St. John's Church is the oldest building adjacent to Lafayette Square. It was designed, and its construction supervised, by Benjamin Henry Latrobe, a leading architect of the early national period. From its opening in October 1816, every person, beginning with James Madison, who has held the office of President of the United States has attended St. John's at least once. Several Presidents have been members. Thus, St. John's is called "the Church of the Presidents." A significant number of members of St. John's, past and present, have played very prominent roles in the public life of the United States and the city of Washington, DC. This book tells the story of this historic church from its origins to the present, while chronicling notable services held at it, and key events in the lives of distinguished Americans who were personally connected with St. John's during their residence in Washington. REVIEWS The first thing to note about this marvelous history of St. John's Church is the research. From start to finish the facts are meticulously assembled and clearly laid out to the reader. This alone makes the book worth reading. But it is far more than a collection of facts. It is the story--or rather the stories-- of St. John's Church that makes this book stand out as a true gem with very few equals in the annals of Church History. --Harry S. Stout Jonathan Edwards Professor of American Religious History Yale University Sited importantly on its corner across from the White House, St. John's Episcopal Church has served both the famous and Everyman without interruption for nearly 200 years, its architectural evolution an index of the development of the capital itself. Historian Richard Grimmett tells the story of the "Church of the Presidents" in "St. John's Church: Lafayette Square" with the painstaking accuracy of an experienced researcher. Flavored with personalities and rich anecdotes, this book begins life as a Washington classic. --William Seale Editor, White House History author of "The President's House: A History." Because St. John's Church has been so closely associated with presidents, cabinet members, powerful insiders and Washington society ... anyone interested in the compelling historical details of a slice of Washington life would want to add the book to his or her library. --Mary O. Klein Archivist, Episcopal Diocese of Maryland.

Download or read book Domestic Institutional Interiors in Early Modern Europe written by Sandra Cavallo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early modern period saw the proliferation of religious, public and charitable institutions and the emergence of new educational structures. By bringing together two areas of inquiry that have so far been seen as distinct, the study of institutions and that of the house and domesticity, this collection provides new insights into the domestic experience of men, women and children who lived in non-family arrangements, while also expanding and problematizing the notion of 'domestic interior'. Through specific case studies, contributors reassess the validity of the categories 'domestic' and 'institutional' and of the oppositions private public, communal individual, religious profane applied to institutional spaces and objects. They consider how rituals, interior decorations, furnishings and images were transferred from the domestic to the institutional interior and vice versa, but also the creative ways in which the residents participated in the formation of their living settings. A variety of secular and religious institutions are considered: hospitals, asylums and orphanages, convents, colleges, public palaces of the ducal and papal court. The interest and novelty of this collection resides in both its subject matter and its interdisciplinary and Europe-wide dimension. The theme is addressed from the perspective of art history, architectural history, and social, gender and cultural history. Chapters deal with Italy, Britain, the Netherlands, Flanders and Portugal and with both Protestant and Catholic settings. The wide range of evidence employed by contributors includes sources - such as graffiti, lottery tickets or garland pictures - that have rarely if ever been considered by historians.
