Book excerpt: New York Times bestseller What is Jesus worth to you? It's easy for American Christians to forget how Jesus said his followers would actually live, what their new lifestyle would actually look like. They would, he said, leave behind security, money, convenience, even family for him. They would abandon everything for the gospel. They would take up their crosses daily... But who do you know who lives like that? Do you? In Radical, David Platt challenges you to consider with an open heart how we have manipulated the gospel to fit our cultural preferences. He shows what Jesus actually said about being his disciple--then invites you to believe and obey what you have heard. And he tells the dramatic story of what is happening as a "successful" suburban church decides to get serious about the gospel according to Jesus. Finally, he urges you to join in The Radical Experiment -- a one-year journey in authentic discipleship that will transform how you live in a world that desperately needs the Good News Jesus came to bring.

How then can we reclaim our God-given identity to take a stand against—and ultimately starve—the predatory porn industry? In The Death of Porn, Ray Ortlund writes six personal letters, as from a father to his son. Ideal for individuals and small groups, it will give hope to men who have been misled by porn into devaluing themselves and others. Through Scripture and personal stories, Ortlund assures readers that God loves them the most tenderly in their moments of deepest shame. The Death of Porn inspires men to come together in new ways to fight the injustice of porn and build a world of nobility for every man and woman—for the sake of future generations.

Book Becoming Women of the Word

Download or read book Becoming Women of the Word written by Sarah Christmyer and published by Ave Maria Press. This book was released on 2019-08-02 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of a 2020 Catholic Press Association book award (third place, scripture-popular studies). The women God called to bring his chosen people into the world were ordinary women who struggled with emptiness, oppression, infertility, and loss—yet who found strength and hope in God. In her first book, Sarah Christmyer—codeveloper of The Great Adventure Catholic Bible study program—pairs the stories of key Old Testament women with stories of women she has known to show us how we can hear God, say yes to his call, and share him with the world just as they did. Breaking open the scriptures to reveal the historical, cultural, and biblical context in which Old Testament women lived, Sarah Christmyer breathes new life into their stories and makes their lives surprisingly relatable. In the process, she shares stories from her own faith journey and the lives of family and friends to show how the same principles that turned ordinary women into heroines of the faith are true for our lives today. Each chapter of Becoming Women of the Word highlights the spiritual legacy of one or more women in the Old Testament. Their world was vastly different from ours, yet they faced the same questions we do: when we can’t feel God’s presence, where do we find help? When our world is collapsing, where is God? Why should we trust him? How can we trust him? Christmyer simply and clearly draws from the lives of these women important principles that help us to trust—even as we struggle with doubt. For example: Through Eve, we learn to hold on to God’s promise even when we fail. Sarah reminds us to wait on God’s timing to make us fruitful. Miriam, the sister of Moses, shows how to lead by example. Ruth and Esther challenge us to see womanhood as a gift. Hannah and Judith inspire us to trust God even in matters of life and death. These unforgettable portraits create a colorful mosaic of faith, encouraging us to mine God’s Word for spiritual treasure and to pass on the gift.

Book Why I Love the Apostle Paul

Download or read book Why I Love the Apostle Paul written by John Piper and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2019-01-17 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Besides Jesus, no one has kept me from despair, or taken me deeper into the mysteries of the gospel, than the apostle Paul." —John Piper No one has had a greater impact on the world for eternal good than the apostle Paul—except Jesus himself. For John Piper, this impact is very personal. He does not just admire and trust Paul. He loves him. Piper gives us thirty glimpses into why his heart and mind respond this way. Can a Christian-killer really endure 195 lashes from a heart of love? Can a mystic who thinks he was caught up into heaven be a model of lucid rationality? Can an ethnocentric Jew write the most beautiful call to reconciliation? Can a person who lives with the unceasing anguish of empathy be always rejoicing? Can a man's description of the horrors of human sin be exceeded by his delight in human splendor? Can a man with a backbone of steel be as tender as a nursing mother? If we know this man—if we see what Piper sees—we too will love him. Paul's testimony is a matter of life and death. Piper invites you into his relationship with Paul in the hope that you will know life, forever.

Book You Can Rejoice in the Lord Always Volume 2

Download or read book You Can Rejoice in the Lord Always Volume 2 written by Franklin J Andreen and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2023-08-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volumes have been written about how to be happy. Countless writers from every religion and background have thrown in their own two cents worth on the subject, "How To Live a Happy Life". If there are a thousand different books out there that have "the answer", what's different about this one? Simply this: The book you hold in your hands doesn't express the opinions of man but the Word of God. Frankly, I don't believe a person can be truly joyful without Christ and a solid foundation in the Bible. But knowing that the Bible tells us we have a happy Father who wants happy children makes all the difference in the world. Knowing that Christ gave us His Word so that "My joy may be in you and your joy may be complete" (John 15:11) gives a person reason to hope for a joy-filled life. Knowing that the Bible tells us (actually, commands us) to "rejoice in the Lord always" (Philippians 4:4) takes us from the emotional rollercoaster ride of ups and downs and sets us in heavenly places where in His Presence is fullness of joy (Psalm 16:11). This is the second of two volumes written on the subject, "You Can Rejoice in the Lord Always". IS such a thing truly possible? And if so, how? The condensed answer is summarized in the subtitle: "Because God is Real and the Bible is True". The expanded explanation is found in the pages of this book. Enjoy!

Book May Your Joy Be Full

    Book Details:
  • Author : Maria Maris
  • Publisher : Cheerful Hope Publishers
  • Release : 2020-04-02
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 254 pages

Download or read book May Your Joy Be Full written by Maria Maris and published by Cheerful Hope Publishers. This book was released on 2020-04-02 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the book -- May Your Joy Be Full; 1,300 Health and Prosperity Bible Affirmations to Bless You and Yours, by Maria Maris: I Believe! What else is there to do if not to believe; and how else can we draw nearer to God and safely get through life without believing? “The just shall live by faith,” the Bible tells us, and that “Without faith we cannot please God.” We’re also constantly reminded that “All things are possible to them that believe.” We hardly get through each day without anxiety relating to either health, finances, business, or relationships, etc. Indeed, only who feels it knows it. And we sometimes wonder if God is still alive, if He has abandoned us to our doom, and whether there’s still any atom of hope for us, or should we simply give up and drag ourselves through life. But the Bible disagrees. God disagrees! And in His own words He said: “I will restore health unto you, and I will heal you... I will give you treasures and riches.” And our Lord Jesus said: “I am come that you might have life more abundantly.” I still remember the glorious day I came across the Bible verse that says: “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.” And, indeed, joy did come that morning... When you’re joyful, your whole being lights up, mostly from the inside out, and you can’t help being aware of it’s presence in you; and people around you can feel it too, or rather, be uplifted by it, even spiritually healed. I soon realized I could recreate a good dose of that feeling, that joy, by going back to the source — the Bible, which says that God wants us to have joy in abundance, telling us to do this or that so our joy may be full. There are over 500 mentions of various ‘joy’ related words in the KJV Bible, like ‘enjoy,’ ‘joyfulness,’ ‘joyful,’ ‘joyous,’ ‘joyfully,’ ‘joyed,’ ‘joying,’ ‘rejoice,’ etc., and of course ‘joy,’ assuring us that God wants us to have abundant joy. I hereby share my personal version of some Bible passages which have blessed me, in the hope that they will remind you of the wonderful promises, miracles and power of God, and help you find more faith and strength in trusting God to shower you and yours with more peace, happiness, healing and blessings. As I mentioned in my other book -- “555 Affirmations from Psalms” -- many of them are my interpretation of some of the verses in the KJV Bible; (some others, of course, are very much as they appear in the KJV Bible). As a young girl I had a hard time understanding the old English therein, so the Spirit led me to start writing down my personal version of what I felt some of the verses were trying to tell me. Be Blessed! And May Your Joy Be Full. -- Maria Maris
