Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first major study devoted to the early Arabic reception and adaption of the figure of Hermes Trismegistus, the legendary Egyptian sage to whom were ascribed numerous works on astrology, alchemy, talismans, medicine, and philosophy. Before the more famous Renaissance European reception of the ancient Greek Hermetica, the Arabic tradition about Hermes and the works under his name had been developing and flourishing for seven hundred years. The legendary Egyptian Hermes Trismegistus was renowned in Roman antiquity as an ancient sage whose teachings were represented in books of philosophy and occult science. The works in his name, written in Greek by Egyptians living under Roman rule, subsequently circulated in many languages and regions of the Roman and Sasanian Persian empires. After the rise of Arabic as a prestigious language of scholarship in the eighth century, accounts of Hermes identity and Hermetic texts were translated into Arabic along with the hundreds of other works translated from Greek, Middle Persian, and other literary languages of antiquity. Hermetica were in fact among the earliest translations into Arabic, appearing already in the eighth century. This book explains the origins of the Arabic myth of Hermes Trismegistus, its sources, the reasons for its peculiar character, and its varied significance for the traditions of Hermetica in Asia and northern Africa as well as Europe. It shows who pre-modern Arabic scholars thought Hermes was and how they came to that view.

Book Arabic Traces in the Hebrew Writing of Arab Authors in Israel

Download or read book Arabic Traces in the Hebrew Writing of Arab Authors in Israel written by Aadel Shakkour and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2021-09-02 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides pioneering research on the Hebrew writings of Arab authors in Israel. It shows how authors in their Hebrew writings try to give their characters an authentic air and to create an atmosphere of authentic culture, and highlights archaic Hebrew syntactic structures that are similar to their Arabic counterparts in order to transmit Arab cultural elements. Language, after all, also serves to mediate between cultures, in addition to its function as a means of medium of communication. The text shows how Arab writers, through their translations point, to Arab culture as a possible model of imitation, as a bridge over what they perceive as a gap between the source and the target cultures. The authors thus see themselves not merely as composers of Hebrew literature, or as translators of Arabic literature into Hebrew, but also as messengers who serve as a bridge between Arabic and Hebrew cultures, and possibly as potential contributors to resolving the Jewish-Arab conflict.

To present it in the form of a maxim, it focuses on short items either directly said by the Prophet (pbuh) or taken from a long hadith. In this area, Nahjulfasaaha is more comprehensive because it is a collection of short hadith and more useful for this collection. This collection of the Prophet’s sayings may reveal the true mission of Muhammad(pbuh) and his legacy to the world. Our youth in particular, need to know and learn from this monotheistic Prophet and apply his teachings in their lives to not only achieve felicity, but also have a positive co-existence with all faiths and religious denominations.

Book Translating Irony between English and Arabic

Download or read book Translating Irony between English and Arabic written by Raymond Chakhachiro and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-14 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book challenges entrenched literary views that promote the impracticality of linguistic, stylistic and functional approaches to the analysis and translation of irony. It considers these scientific fields of enquiry as the building blocks on which ironic devices in English and Arabic are grounded, and according to which the appropriateness of the methods of translation in the literature is assessed in a quest to pin down an interactive model for the interpretation and translation of irony. The book ventures into contrastive linguistic and stylistic analyses of irony in Arabic and English from literary, linguistic and discourse perspectives. It sheds light on the interpretation and the linguistic realisation of irony in Arabic and English through an interdisciplinary approach, and, consequently, identifies similarities and discrepancies in the form and function of ironic devices between these languages. As such, it will appeal to professional translators, instructors and students of translation, as well as language learners, language teachers and researchers in cross-cultural and inter-pragmatic disciplines.
