Book Teachers Journeys into International School Teaching in China

Download or read book Teachers Journeys into International School Teaching in China written by Adam Poole and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-09-27 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poole’s book illuminates the experiences and perspectives of host country national teachers at internationalised schools in China. The international school sector in China has undergone significant changes in recent years. This is due to the growing demand for international education from local middle-class families. In response, a new type of school has emerged. Going by various names, such as private, bilingual or internationalised, these schools offer a fusion of national and international curricula and are staffed predominantly by host country national teachers. Despite these changes, we still know little about who host country national teachers are and what draws them to the world of international schooling. Accordingly, this book explores the motivations and mobilities of host country national teachers in China. It identifies three types of teacher: Returners, Reachers, and Remainers. Returners are graduates who have returned to China from overseas study. They are drawn to international schools by the opportunity to use their international experience and qualification. Reachers are internal migrants who face structural inequality and attracted to international schools by the opportunity for social mobility. Remainers are married teachers with children. They are motivated to work in international schools by the perceived stability and security these schools offer. Discussing implications for teacher recruitment, development, and retention in international schools, this book is an essential read for international educational researchers as well as students researching international education or teacher identity.

Book The 5 Year Plan The Nets Tumultuous Journey from New Jersey to Brooklyn

Download or read book The 5 Year Plan The Nets Tumultuous Journey from New Jersey to Brooklyn written by Greg Hrinya and published by Wheatmark, Inc.. This book was released on 2015-05-22 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Jersey Nets were mired in mediocrity when an international man of mystery emerged from the shadows. Russian multibillionaire Mikhail Prokhorov came bearing two gifts: a bottomless wallet and a passion for basketball. In return for his money, he expected everybody associated with the team -- management, players, ball boys -- to commit to success . . . and achieve it within five years. But the Nets required more than money to change their fortunes. They needed shrewd decision makers, brilliant minds, and the most physically gifted players in the world. Instead, as Prokhorov's thirst for instant gratification spiraled out of control, management turned losing into an art form, dangling perfectly good players as trade bait, kowtowing to their stars, and alienating an entire state. The fallout on the court and in the locker room produced, if not a winning team, the most interesting basketball story not yet told.

Book excerpt: A biography of Thomas Sowell, one of America's most influential conservative thinkers Thomas Sowell is one of the great social theorists of our age. In a career spanning more than a half century, he has written over thirty books, covering topics from economic history and social inequality to political theory, race, and culture. His bold and unsentimental assaults on liberal orthodoxy have endeared him to many readers but have also enraged fellow intellectuals, the civil-rights establishment, and much of the mainstream media. The result has been a lack of acknowledgment of his scholarship among critics who prioritize political correctness. In the first-ever biography of Sowell, Jason Riley gives this iconic thinker his due and responds to the detractors. Maverick showcases Sowell's most significant writings and traces the life events that shaped his ideas and resulted in a Black orphan from the Jim Crow South becoming one of our foremost public intellectuals.

Book The British Film Industry in 25 Careers

Download or read book The British Film Industry in 25 Careers written by Geoffrey Macnab and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-01-28 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British Film Industry in 25 Careers tells the history of the British film industry from an unusual perspective - that of various mavericks, visionaries and outsiders who, often against considerable odds, have become successful producers, distributors, writers, directors, editors, props masters, publicists, special effects technicians, talent scouts, stars and, sometimes, even moguls. Some, such as Richard Attenborough and David Puttnam, are well-known names. Others, such as the screenwriter and editor Alma Reville, also known as Mrs Alfred Hitchcock; Constance Smith, the 'lost star' of British cinema, or the producer Betty Box and her director sister Muriel, are far less well known. What they all have in common, though, is that they found their own pathways into the British film business, overcoming barriers of nationality, race, class and gender to do so. Counterpointing the essays on historical figures are interviews with contemporaries including the director Amma Asante, the writer and filmmaker Julian Fellowes, artist and director Isaac Julien, novelist and screenwriter Hanif Kureishi, and media entrepreneur Efe Cakarel, founder of the online film platform MUBI, who've come into today's industry, adjusting to an era in which production and releasing models are changing – and in which films are distributed digitally as well as theatrically.

Book excerpt: For over thirty years, Sue Haynes has taught highly creative children who resist standardized learning and who are often mislabeled ADD and/or learning disabled. Through supporting their creative expression, she has developed an alternative lens through which she sees their unique strengths. Through this lens Sue sees, not disabled learners, but talented, intuitive individuals who exhibit a passion for learning what intrigues them and a drive to express their learning in creative ways. These learners are compelled to be true to their inner agendas and thus resist curriculums that lack personal relevance. Sue has discovered that creatively gifted learners, and indeed all learners, need the freedom and support to learn through intuitive knowing and creative expression in order to maximize their potential. Sue's book about her theories and experiences,Creative Mavericks: Beacons of Authentic Learning, consists of three sections: Section One includes "Who is the Creatively Gifted Learner," which explores the attributes of highly creative learners, and "Seeing Through a Different Lens: Facilitating the Creatively Gifted Learner" which describes her teaching; Section Two, "Heartsongs: The Struggles and Triumphs of Creatively Gifted Learners," includes the stories of twelve individuals who share reflections on their schooling and the fruition of their creative empowerment; Section Three, "Implications of Education for Creatively Gifted Learners: Awakening Passion and Authenticity in All Learners," further explores the conditions which foster learning empowerment through the reflections of nine innovative classroom teachers. These teachers reveal that the passion and creative expression so evident in highly creative learners are seeded within all learners and can be awakened by teaching which honors the uniqueness of each individual. Sue's hope is that Creative Mavericks may inspire an exploration of teaching and learning that moves beyond the confines of standardized education and empowers our true potential.
