Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Northeast Pennsylvania's Wyoming Valley was truly a dark and bloody ground, the site of murders, massacres, and pitched battles. The valley's turbulent history was the product of a bitter contest over property and power known as the Wyoming controversy. This dispute, which raged between the mid-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries, intersected with conflicts between whites and native peoples over land, a jurisdictional contest between Pennsylvania and Connecticut, violent contention over property among settlers and land speculators, and the social tumult of the American Revolution. In its later stages, the controversy pitted Pennsylvania and its settlers and speculators against "Wild Yankees"—frontier insurgents from New England who contested the state's authority and soil rights. In Wild Yankees, Paul B. Moyer argues that a struggle for personal independence waged by thousands of ordinary settlers lay at the root of conflict in northeast Pennsylvania and across the revolutionary-era frontier. The concept and pursuit of independence was not limited to actual war or high politics; it also resonated with ordinary people, such as the Wild Yankees, who pursued their own struggles for autonomy. This battle for independence drew settlers into contention with native peoples, wealthy speculators, governments, and each other over land, the shape of America's postindependence social order, and the meaning of the Revolution. With vivid descriptions of the various levels of this conflict, Moyer shows that the Wyoming controversy illuminates settlement, the daily lives of settlers, and agrarian unrest along the early American frontier.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The anthracite coal region of Pennsylvania once prospered. Today, very little mining or industry remains, although residents have made valiant efforts to restore the fabric of their communities. In The Face of Decline, the noted historians Thomas Dublin and Walter Licht offer a sweeping history of this area over the course of the twentieth century. Combining business, labor, social, political, and environmental history, Dublin and Licht delve into coal communities to explore grassroots ethnic life and labor activism, economic revitalization, and the varied impact of economic decline across generations of mining families. The Face of Decline also features the responses to economic crisis of organized capital and labor, local business elites, redevelopment agencies, and state and federal governments. Dublin and Licht draw on a remarkable range of sources: oral histories and survey questionnaires; documentary photographs; the records of coal companies, local governments, and industrial development corporations; federal censuses; and community newspapers. The authors examine the impact of enduring economic decline across a wide region but focus especially on a small group of mining communities in the region's Panther Valley, from Jim Thorpe through Lansford to Tamaqua. The authors also place the anthracite region within a broader conceptual framework, comparing anthracite's decline to parallel developments in European coal basins and Appalachia and to deindustrialization in the United States more generally.

Book Pennsylvania Speculator and Patriot the Entrepreneurial John Nicholson 1757 1800

Download or read book Pennsylvania Speculator and Patriot the Entrepreneurial John Nicholson 1757 1800 written by Robert D. Arbuckle and published by Penn State University Press. This book was released on 1975 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the largely neglected Nicholson manuscripts, this book throws new light on the crucial importance of land speculation in the post-Revolutionary period, and on the career of a man who became the leading speculator in Pennsylvania and one of the chief land jobbers in the new nation. Nicholson, rather than his partner, Robert Morris, is shown to be the prime mover in the Federal City Project. It is also revealed that some of Nicholson's promotional efforts won the praise of President Washington. Several myths are dispelled--for instance, by showing that some of the allegedly mythical settlements in Kentucky were quite real. Most important, Professor Arbuckle reveals how Nicholson's dual career, as political idealist and financial gambler, stemmed from his unbounded faith in the potential growth of the infant republic. The book begins with Nicholson's use of his position as a state official for speculative purposes. It examines his roles as a founder of the National Democratic Party, a promoter of a settlement (Asylum) for French émigrés, a planner and developer of Washington, D.C., and an entrepreneur in the export trade, iron and textile manufacturing, and steamboat promotion. It ends with his evasion of creditors and his death in debtor's prison at age 43, leaving a wife and eight children and debts of over twelve million dollars.
