Book A Worse Place Than Hell How the Civil War Battle of Fredericksburg Changed a Nation

Download or read book A Worse Place Than Hell How the Civil War Battle of Fredericksburg Changed a Nation written by John Matteson and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2021-02-09 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pulitzer Prize–winning author John Matteson illuminates three harrowing months of the Civil War and their enduring legacy for America. December 1862 drove the United States toward a breaking point. The Battle of Fredericksburg shattered Union forces and Northern confidence. As Abraham Lincoln’s government threatened to fracture, this critical moment also tested five extraordinary individuals whose lives reflect the soul of a nation. The changes they underwent led to profound repercussions in the country’s law, literature, politics, and popular mythology. Taken together, their stories offer a striking restatement of what it means to be American. Guided by patriotism, driven by desire, all five moved toward singular destinies. A young Harvard intellectual steeped in courageous ideals, Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. confronted grave challenges to his concept of duty. The one-eyed army chaplain Arthur Fuller pitted his frail body against the evils of slavery. Walt Whitman, a gay Brooklyn poet condemned by the guardians of propriety, and Louisa May Alcott, a struggling writer seeking an authentic voice and her father’s admiration, tended soldiers’ wracked bodies as nurses. On the other side of the national schism, John Pelham, a West Point cadet from Alabama, achieved a unique excellence in artillery tactics as he served a doomed and misbegotten cause. A Worse Place Than Hell brings together the prodigious forces of war with the intimacy of individual lives. Matteson interweaves the historic and the personal in a work as beautiful as it is powerful.

Book excerpt: The village of Matteson was founded in 1855 and named after the 10th governor of Illinois, Joel Matteson. German immigrants were the areas first settlers, seeking agriculture and business opportunities. The Illinois Central and Michigan Central Railroads provided the stimulus for the growth of one of the first communities to the south of Chicago. The area became popular in the 1890s, when Chicago residents rode special trains to visit the amusement park run by Moses and Freeman Elliott. By the mid-20th century, the town had established itself as a growing bedroom community due to the electrification of the Illinois Central suburban service in 1926 and an increase in residential housing designed for American GIs returning home after World War II. Transportation has always played a key role in the development of the village, which sits at the crossroads of Americas first land grant railroad, the Illinois Central, and the countrys first transcontinental road, the Lincoln Highway. Since the 1970s, Matteson has grown into a vibrant retail and commercial area for Chicagos south suburbs.

Book excerpt: This “masterful epic” spans decades and oceans from Trinidad to the American frontier during the tumultuous days of westward expansion (Publishers Weekly). Trinidad, 1796. Young Rosa Rendón quietly rebels against the life others expect her to lead. Bright, competitive, and opinionated, she does not intend to cook and keep house, for it is obvious her talents lie in running the farm she views as her birthright. But when her homeland changes from Spanish to British rule, the fate of free black property owners—Rosa’s family among them—is suddenly jeopardized. By 1830, Rosa is living among the Crow Nation in Bighorn, Montana, with her children and her husband, Edward Rose, a Crow chief. Her son Victor is of the age where he must seek his vision and become a man. But his path forward is blocked by secrets Rosa has kept from him. So Rosa must take him to where his story began and, in turn, retrace her own roots. Along the way, she must acknowledge the painful events that forced her from the middle of an ocean to the rugged terrain of a far-away land. A Booklist Editor’s Choice Book of the Year

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 Bronson Alcott’s life was shaped by three significant events that occurred within a short period of time in 1828: he paid his first visit to the city of Boston, he first heard the preaching of a young Unitarian minister named Ralph Waldo Emerson, and he proposed marriage to a fascinating woman named Abigail May. #2 Bronson’s school days were interrupted by a total solar eclipse in 1806. He and a group of boys gathered stones to throw at the phenomenon. He stepped awkwardly, dislocating his shoulder blade. More than sixty years later, he recalled this accident as a prophecy of his life. #3 Bronson Alcott grew up on Spindle Hill, and he loved it. It was there that he learned about the world and his parents’ farm, which he found to be a perfect place for him to grow up. #4 Bronson was eventually able to get away from his small town and go to the local school, but he was still confined to the small range of thought that a small, isolated town could provide. He began looking for ways to distance himself intellectually from his environment.

Book Statistics and Data Analysis for Financial Engineering

Download or read book Statistics and Data Analysis for Financial Engineering written by David Ruppert and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-04-21 with total page 736 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new edition of this influential textbook, geared towards graduate or advanced undergraduate students, teaches the statistics necessary for financial engineering. In doing so, it illustrates concepts using financial markets and economic data, R Labs with real-data exercises, and graphical and analytic methods for modeling and diagnosing modeling errors. These methods are critical because financial engineers now have access to enormous quantities of data. To make use of this data, the powerful methods in this book for working with quantitative information, particularly about volatility and risks, are essential. Strengths of this fully-revised edition include major additions to the R code and the advanced topics covered. Individual chapters cover, among other topics, multivariate distributions, copulas, Bayesian computations, risk management, and cointegration. Suggested prerequisites are basic knowledge of statistics and probability, matrices and linear algebra, and calculus. There is an appendix on probability, statistics and linear algebra. Practicing financial engineers will also find this book of interest.
