Book Matthew s Transfiguration Story and Jewish Christian Controversy

Download or read book Matthew s Transfiguration Story and Jewish Christian Controversy written by A. D. Moses and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1996-02-01 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gospel accounts of the transfiguration of Jesus continue to puzzle the average reader. The purpose of this book is to address some of the perplexing issues surrounding the event, and to explain the significance of the transfiguration, particularly in Matthew's Gospel. It demonstrates that Matthew's account of the event is to be seen in the context of first-century controversy between Christians and Jews about Jesus and Moses, with the Jews emphasizing Moses' greatness and Matthew portraying the transfiguration within Moses-Sinai categories and also in terms of the enigmatic Son of Man figure in Daniel 7. Possible influence of the transfiguration event is also seen elsewhere, particularly in 2 Corinthians 3 and 4, where, the author argues, Paul uses his Damascus road experience as a counter to his opponents' emphasis on the law and Peter's witness to Jesus' transfiguration.

Book Beware the Evil Eye Volume 1

Download or read book Beware the Evil Eye Volume 1 written by John H. Elliott and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-11-11 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the "Sermon on the Mount," Jesus of Nazareth makes reference to one of the oldest beliefs in the ancient world--the malignity of an Evil Eye. The Holy Scriptures in their original languages contain no less than twenty-four references to the Evil Eye, although this is obscured by most modern Bible translations. John H. Elliott's Beware the Evil Eye describes this belief and associated practices, its history, its voluminous appearances in ancient cultures, and the extensive research devoted to it over the centuries in order to unravel this enigma for readers who have never heard of the Evil Eye and its presence in the Bible.

Book The First World War and the Mobilization of Biblical Scholarship

Download or read book The First World War and the Mobilization of Biblical Scholarship written by Andrew Mein and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-03-07 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating collection of essays charts, for the first time, the range of responses by scholars on both sides of the conflict to the outbreak of war in August 1914. The volume examines how biblical scholars, like their compatriots from every walk of life, responded to the great crisis they faced, and, with relatively few exceptions, were keen to contribute to the war effort. Some joined up as soldiers. More commonly, however, biblical scholars and theologians put pen to paper as part of the torrent of patriotic publication that arose both in the United Kingdom and in Germany. The contributors reveal that, in many cases, scholars were repeating or refining common arguments about the responsibility for the war. In Germany and Britain, where the Bible was still central to a Protestant national culture, we also find numerous more specialized works, where biblical scholars brought their own disciplinary expertise to bear on the matter of war in general, and this war in particular. The volume's contributors thus offer new insights into the place of both the Bible and biblical scholarship in early 20th-century culture.

Book A Thematic Access Oriented Bibliography of Jesus s Resurrection

Download or read book A Thematic Access Oriented Bibliography of Jesus s Resurrection written by Michael J. Alter and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-12-31 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The keystone of Christianity is Jesus’s physical, bodily resurrection. Present-day scholars can be significantly challenged as they forage through voluminous documents on the resurrection of Jesus. The literature measures well over seven thousand sources in English-language books alone. This makes finding specific sources that are most relevant for specific scholarly purposes an arduous task. Even when a specific book is relevant, finding the parts of the book that are most relevant to the resurrection rather than other topics often requires additional effort. A Thematic Access-Oriented Bibliography of Jesus’s Resurrection addresses these challenges in several ways. First, the bibliography organizes more than seven thousand English sources into twelve main categories and then thirty-four subcategories, which are designed to help you find the most relevant literature quickly and efficiently. Embedded are pro and con arguments which support efficient access through brief annotations and then annotate the diversity and complexity of the field of religion by including sources that represent a diverse range of views: theistic (e.g., Christian, Jewish, Muslim, etc.), agnostic, and nontheistic. The objective of this bibliography is to provide convenient access to relevant sources from a variety of perspectives, allowing you to browse or find the one source accurately and with ease.

Book The Dunayevskaya Marcuse Fromm Correspondence 1954 1978

Download or read book The Dunayevskaya Marcuse Fromm Correspondence 1954 1978 written by Kevin Anderson and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2012 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents for the first time the correspondence during the years 1954 to 1978 between the Marxist-Humanist and feminist philosopher Raya Dunayevskaya (1910-87) and two other noted thinkers, the Hegelian Marxist philosopher and social theorist Herbert Marcuse (1898-1979) and the psychologist and social critic Erich Fromm (1900-80), both of the latter members of the Frankfurt School of Critical Theory. In their introduction, editors Kevin B. Anderson and Russell Rockwell focus on the theoretical and political dialogues in these letters, which cover topics such as dialectical social theory, Marxist economics, socialist humanism, the structure and contradictions of modern capitalism, the history of Marxism and of the Frankfurt School, feminism and revolution, developments in the USSR, Cuba, and China, and emergence of the New Left of the 1960s. The editors' extensive explanatory notes offer helpful background information, definitions of theoretical concepts, and source references. Among the thinkers discussed in the correspondence - some of them quite critically-- are Karl Marx, G. W. F. Hegel, Rosa Luxemburg, Georg Luk cs, Theodor Adorno, Max Horkheimer, Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, V. I. Lenin, Nikolai Bukharin, Sigmund Freud, Leon Trotsky, Mao Zedong, Daniel Bell, and Seymour Martin Lipset. As a whole, this volume shows the deeply Marxist and humanist concerns of these thinkers, each of whom had a lifelong concern with rethinking Marx and Hegel as the foundation for an analysis of capitalist modernity and its forces of opposition.
