Book excerpt: The purpose of this paper is used to document the different steps followed to construct the 2013 Social Accounting Matrix for Uganda. The SAM is an extension of the Standard Nexus Structure. It consists of 55 activity sectors, 55 commodity sectors, three types of factors of production: labor (rural and urban disaggregated by level of education), land, and capital (disaggregated by crops, livestock, mining and other sectors). The household sector is divided spatially into urban and rural households. Rural households are further disaggregated into households that earn crop and/or livestock incomes (i.e., farm households) and those that do no earn incomes from either source (i.e., nonfarm households). Households are further disaggregated into per capita expenditure quintiles. This SAM allows analyzing issues at the detailed level and to better understand the potential impacts of policy changes for both better off and more vulnerable households.

Book excerpt: The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) is pleased to present the first regionalized social accounting matrix (SAM) for Egypt. This SAM marks a major milestone in “localizing” development research and policy in Egypt and is expected to be most valuable for the development, implementation, and assessment of Egypt’s national and local development plans, like Egypt’s Sustainable Development Strategy 2030. In addition to standard SAMs, which combine many national datasets from institutions such as Central Banks, Ministries of Finance and Agriculture, and Statistical Bureaus, this regionalized SAM makes extensive use of sub-national level information such as the Economic Survey and Household Income and Expenditure Survey (HIECS) produced by CAPMAS, regional GDP estimates by the Ministry of Planning, Monitoring and Administrative Reform, and the Agricultural Bulletins with information at the Governorate level produced by the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation. With this data it becomes possible to provide a detailed, socioeconomic status update for different regions within Egypt. As such, the disaggregated SAM allows for analyzing developmental issues at regional level and to better understand the potential impacts of policy changes at the local level.

Book excerpt: Large dimensional random matrices (LDRM) with specific patterns arise in econometrics, computer science, mathematics, physics, and statistics. This book provides an easy initiation to LDRM. Through a unified approach, we investigate the existence and properties of the limiting spectral distribution (LSD) of different patterned random matrices as the dimension grows. The main ingredients are the method of moments and normal approximation with rudimentary combinatorics for support. Some elementary results from matrix theory are also used. By stretching the moment arguments, we also have a brush with the intriguing but difficult concepts of joint convergence of sequences of random matrices and its ramifications. This book covers the Wigner matrix, the sample covariance matrix, the Toeplitz matrix, the Hankel matrix, the sample autocovariance matrix and the k-Circulant matrices. Quick and simple proofs of their LSDs are provided and it is shown how the semi-circle law and the March enko-Pastur law arise as the LSDs of the first two matrices. Extending the basic approach, we also establish interesting limits for some triangular matrices, band matrices, balanced matrices, and the sample autocovariance matrix. We also study the joint convergence of several patterned matrices, and show that independent Wigner matrices converge jointly and are asymptotically free of other patterned matrices. Arup Bose is a Professor at the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, India. He is a distinguished researcher in Mathematical Statistics and has been working in high-dimensional random matrices for the last fifteen years. He has been the Editor of Sankyhā for several years and has been on the editorial board of several other journals. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, USA and all three national science academies of India, as well as the recipient of the S.S. Bhatnagar Award and the C.R. Rao Award. His forthcoming books are the monograph, Large Covariance and Autocovariance Matrices (with Monika Bhattacharjee), to be published by Chapman & Hall/CRC Press, and a graduate text, U-statistics, M-estimates and Resampling (with Snigdhansu Chatterjee), to be published by Hindustan Book Agency.

Such modeling has proven to be a powerful evidence-based analytical tool for informing policy making and for assessing the impact of different policy interventions, especially during the COVID-19 crisis.

During the past two decades, there has been an ever-increasing pace in the development of neuroimaging techniques, delivering in vivo information on the anatomy and physiological signals of different human organs through a variety of imaging modalities such as MRI, x-ray, CT, and PET. These multi-modality medical images provide valuable data for accurate interpretation and estimation of various biological parameters such as anatomical labels, disease types, cognitive states, functional connectivity between distinct anatomical regions, as well as activation responses to specific stimuli. In the era of big neuroimaging data, Bayes’ theorem provides a powerful tool to deliver statistical conclusions by combining the current information and prior experience. When sufficiently good data is available, Bayes’ theorem can utilize it fully and provide statistical inferences/estimations with the least error rate. Bayes’ theorem arose roughly three hundred years ago and has seen extensive application in many fields of science and technology, including recent neuroimaging, ever since. The last fifteen years have seen a great deal of success in the application of Bayes’ theorem to the field of CA and neuroimaging. That said, given that the power and success of Bayes’ rule largely depends on the validity of its probabilistic inputs, it is still a challenge to perform Bayesian estimation and inference on the typically noisy neuroimaging data of the real world. We assembled contributions focusing on recent developments in CA and neuroimaging through Bayesian estimation and inference, in terms of both methodologies and applications. It is anticipated that the articles in this Research Topic will provide a greater insight into the field of Bayesian imaging analysis.
