Book excerpt: Mathematics: intellectual endeavor, production factor, key technology, key to key technologies? Mathematics is all of these! The last three of its facets have been the focus of the research and development in the Berlin-based DFG Research Center MATHEON in the last twelve years. Through these activities MATHEON has become an international trademark for carrying out creative, application-driven research in mathematics and for cooperating with industrial partners in the solution of complex problems in key technologies. Modern key technologies have become highly sophisticated, integrating aspects of engineering, computer, business and other sciences. Flexible mathematical models, as well as fast and accurate methods for numerical simulation and optimization open new possibilities to handle the indicated complexities, to react quickly, and to explore new options. Researchers in mathematical fields such as Optimization, Discrete Mathematics, Numerical Analysis, Scientific Computing, Applied Analysis and Stochastic Analysis have to work hand in hand with scientists and engineers to fully exploit this potential and to strengthen the transversal role of mathematics in the solution of the challenging problems in key technologies. This book presents in seven chapters the highlights of the research work carried out in the MATHEON application areas: Life Sciences, Networks, Production, Electronic and Photonic Devices, Finance, Visualization, and Education. The chapters summarize many of the contributions, put them in the context of current mathematical research activities and outline their impact in various key technologies. To make some of the results more easily accessible to the general public, a large number of "showcases" are presented that illustrate a few success stories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematics: intellectual endeavor, production factor, key technology, key to key technologies? Mathematics is all of these; the last three of its facets are not well known, though. They have been the focus of the research and development in the Berlin-based DFG Research Center MATHEON in the last twelve years. Through these activities, MATHEON has become an international trademark. Its mission and its strategies for carrying out creative, application-driven research in mathematics and cooperating in the solution of complex problems in key technologies are by now a role model for the development of many other centers. Modern key technologies have become highly sophisticated, integrating aspects of engineering, computer, business and other sciences. At the same time, the innovation cycles get shorter and shorter. These simultaneous challenges can be mastered only by qualitatively and quantitatively rigorous methods. And that is where mathematics is indispensable. Flexible mathematical models, as well as fast and accurate methods for numerical simulation and optimization, open new possibilities to handle the indicated complexities, to react quickly, and to explore new options. Researchers in mathematical fields such as optimization, discrete mathematics, numerical analysis, scientific computing, applied analysis and stochastic analysis have to work hand in hand with scientists and engineers to fully exploit this potential and to strengthen the transversal role of mathematics in solving the challenging problems in key technologies. This book presents in seven chapters the research highlights of the research work carried out in the MATHEON application areas: Life Sciences, Networks, Production, Electronic and Photonic Devices, Finance, Visualization, and Education. The chapters summarize many of the contributions, put them in the context of current mathematical research activities, and outline their impact in various key technologies. Download or read book Mathematics Key Technology for the Future written by Willi Jäger and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-04-10 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the results of a number of projects funded by the BMBF in the initiative "Mathematics for Innovations in Industry and Services". It shows that a broad spectrum of analytical and numerical mathematical methods and programming techniques are used to solve a lot of different specific industrial or services problems. The main focus is on the fact that the mathematics used is not usually standard mathematics or black box mathematics but is specifically developed for specific industrial or services problems. Mathematics is more than a tool box or an ancilarry science for other scientific disciplines or users. Through this book the reader will gain insight into the details of mathematical modeling and numerical simulation for a lot of industrial applications.

The rapid progress of information technology and computer systems offers a large potential and new perspectives for solving complex problems. Mathematical modelling and simulation have become important tools not only in scientific investigations but also in analysing, planning and controlling technological and economic processes. Mathematics, imbedded in an interdisciplinary concept, has become a key technology. The book covers the results of a variety of major projects in industrial mathematics following an initiative of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. All projects are collaborations of industrial companies and university-based researchers, and range from automotive industry to computer technology and medical visualisation. In general, the projects presented in this volume prove that new mathematical ideas and methods can be decisive for the solution of industrial and economic problems.

Book Currents in Industrial Mathematics

Download or read book Currents in Industrial Mathematics written by Helmut Neunzert and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-11-01 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an insider's view of how industrial problems are translated into mathematics and how solving the mathematics leads to convincing industrial solutions as well. In 6 technical chapters, a wide range of industrial problems is modeled, simulated, and optimized; 4 others describe the modeling, computing, optimization, and data analysis concepts shaping the work of the Fraunhofer ITWM. Each technical chapter illustrates how the relevant mathematics has been adapted or extended for the specific application and details the underlying practical problem and resulting software. The final chapter shows how the use of mathematical modeling in the classroom can change the image of this subject, making it exciting and fun.

Book Operations Research Proceedings 2010

Download or read book Operations Research Proceedings 2010 written by Bo Hu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-24 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains selected papers from the symposium "Operations Research 2010" which was held from September 1-3, 2010 at the "Universität der Bundeswehr München", Germany. The international conference, which also serves as the annual meeting of the German Operations Research Society (GOR), attracted more than 600 participants from more than thirty countries. The general theme "Mastering Complexity" focusses on a natural component of the globalization process. Financial markets, traffic systems, network topologies and, last but not least, energy resource management, all contain complex behaviour and economic interdependencies which necessitate a scientific solution. Operations Research is one of the key instruments to model, simulate and analyze such systems. In the process of developing optimal solutions, suitable heuristics and efficient procedures are some of the challenges which are discussed in this volume.

Download or read book Dimension Reduction of Large Scale Systems written by Peter Benner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-03-30 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past decades, model reduction has become an ubiquitous tool in analysis and simulation of dynamical systems, control design, circuit simulation, structural dynamics, CFD, and many other disciplines dealing with complex physical models. The aim of this book is to survey some of the most successful model reduction methods in tutorial style articles and to present benchmark problems from several application areas for testing and comparing existing and new algorithms. As the discussed methods have often been developed in parallel in disconnected application areas, the intention of the mini-workshop in Oberwolfach and its proceedings is to make these ideas available to researchers and practitioners from all these different disciplines.
