Excerpt: ...we can construct cylinders, and conversely, with cylinders we can construct or make planes. Application of cylinders in husbandry.--By means of a cylinder, made to roll on a road, recently constructed or repaired, on a grass plat, or on a field lately ploughed up, the projecting parts are flattened down to a common level, and the earth is thus smoothed into a plane surface. Pastry cooks use a piece of wood, which is generally of the figure of a cylinder, and called a roller, to spread out their paste, which is done by rolling it, pressing on it, and pushing it with both hands. Thus, the paste is flattened and transformed into thin leaves, terminated above and below by plane surfaces. Combination of cylinders--Flattening rollers.--In place of using only a single cylinder to produce plane surfaces, it is found more advantageous to employ two combined 144 FLATTENING CYLINDERS. cylinders, the axes of which are parallel. Let AB, ab, fig. 15, pl. 8, be the axes of the two cylinders so placed, that of themselves they neither approach to, nor separate from each other, but may be made to do so to any degree, it is the pleasure of the workman. The two axes being placed parallel to each other, and the cylinders being made as true as possible, they are at the same distance from each other, at every point. If we now cause a plate of metal, or any other substance which can be flattened to pass between these two cylinders, it will be reduced to the thickness of the shortest distance, whatever that may be between the two cylinders. After having caused the metal to pass once between the cylinders, if they are made to approach each other a little, and the plate be again made to pass between them, it will be reduced in thickness by a quantity equal to the...

Book The Shapes of Knowledge from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment

Download or read book The Shapes of Knowledge from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment written by D.R. Kelley and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The original idea for a conference on the "shapes of knowledge" dates back over ten years to conversations with the late Charles Schmitt of the Warburg Institute. What happened to the classifications of the sciences between the time of the medieval Studium and that of the French Encyclopedie is a complex and highly abstract question; but posing it is an effective way of mapping and evaluating long term intellectual changes, especially those arising from the impact of humanist scholarship, the new science of the seventeenth century, and attempts to evaluate, to apply, to reconcile, and to institutionalize these rival and interacting traditions. Yet such patterns and transformations cannot be well understood from the heights of the general history of ideas. Within the ~eneral framework of the organization of knowledge the map must be filled in by particular explorations and soundings, and our project called for a conference that would combine some encyclopedic (as well as interdisciplinary and inter national) breadth with scholarly and technical depth.

Book Biodynamic Excisional Skin Tension Lines for Cutaneous Surgery

Download or read book Biodynamic Excisional Skin Tension Lines for Cutaneous Surgery written by Sharad P. Paul and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-02 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a detailed review of the ‘state-of-the art’ of skin lines in cutaneous surgery. Surgical literature is inundated with references to Langer’s Lines, Cleavage Lines, Wrinkle Lines and Relaxed Skin Tension Lines, but this title discusses the difference between these and incisional and excisional lines biomechanically, introducing the concept of biodynamic excisional skin tension (BEST) Lines. The problem with current concepts of skin tension lines is that they seem to differ in different textbooks, and lines for surgical egress, which work in conditions of low tension, are not necessarily suitable for skin cancer surgery. Biodynamic Excisional Skin Tension Lines for Cutaneous Surgery describes skin biomechanics, the properties of collagen and elastin, lower limb skin vascularity and also maps BEST lines across the body, making it a great reference guide for plastic or dermatologic surgery worldwide. As such, it will be beneficial for anyone performing cutaneous surgery and skin cancer excisions in clinical practice, or for those planning further research into skin biomechanics to read this volume.
