Book excerpt: In this reader, maths teachers in the early years of their careers will find a concise yet comprehensive guide to developments in mathematics teaching in secondary schools and the controversies which currently surround it. After a brief summary of the historical context, a series of short articles provides a range of perspectives on various issues of current debate which will help new teachers in the development of their own teaching styles. These include the impact of computers and calculators in maths teaching, the various arguments about the use of published schemes and for more investigational approaches to the curriculum, and the way in which social and cultural factors can be approached through the teaching of various topics in mathematics. The final section looks at how teachers might continue their professional development through action research in their own classrooms.

Download or read book EBOOK NUMERACY AND BEYOND written by Martin Hughes and published by McGraw-Hill Education (UK). This book was released on 2000-05-16 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the fundamental problems in education is that of applying skills and knowledge which learners have gained in one context to problems they encounter in another. This is particularly so in mathematics, where the problems encountered by learners in applying mathematical knowledge are well documented. Using and applying mathematics has been a central component of the National Curriculum in mathematics. However, the National Numeracy Strategy has adopted a new approach, in which 'using and applying' is integrated throughout the mathematics curriculum. This book aims to help teachers develop their understanding and practice in this crucial area. It is based on the findings of a major research study, funded by the Nuffield Foundation, in which a group of primary teachers worked closely with the research team to develop their thinking and practice. The book provides a clear conceptual analysis of the problem of application, together with extensive examples of ways in which teachers can address it in their classrooms at Key Stages 1 and 2. A novel feature of the book is that it includes first-hand accounts of practice in Japanese classrooms, and outlines what teachers in the UK and elsewhere may learn from Japanese methods.

Book excerpt: Mathematics for Curriculum Leaders involves teachers in a deliberate enquiry into the nature of understanding in mathematics and the ideas underlying its teaching and learning. Helping children with the language of mathematics is shown to play an important part in mathematics teaching. The pack is divided into 7 units drawing upon the demands of the National Curriculum and providing activities to support children in their attempts to report their thinking. Sensitive collection and interpretation of this information in order to guide action is an essential feature of each unit.

Book Mathematics in Nursery Education Second Edition

Download or read book Mathematics in Nursery Education Second Edition written by Ann Montague-Smith and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-22 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Second Edition covers the mathematics needed to teach the Early Learning Goals. It has been up-dated to include new research findings as well as new topics, for example, using number lines with young children. The topics of counting, number (including early addition and subtraction), pattern, measures and shape and space are covered in detail. Each chapter contains suggestions for key questions to ask in order to encourage children to discuss their mathematics and to demonstrate what they know and understand. There are sections on developing problem-solving skills, working with parents and other adults in the nursery setting, as well as detailed charts giving ideas for activities and how to assess learning, and some activities planned in full. The final chapter gives detailed help with planning and assessment of mathematics. The book is intended for anyone working with children in the early years: teachers, nursery nurses, classroom assistants, playgroup leaders and workers, child-minders and day care staff. It is particularly suitable as a course text for those training to be teachers, either through the undergraduate route, or through a PGCE, and for those studying for early childhood degrees or diplomas.

Book Children s Mathematical Thinking in Primary Years

Download or read book Children s Mathematical Thinking in Primary Years written by Julia Anghileri and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2005-05-01 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This popular Continuum series, intended chiefly for teachers and trainee teachers, places strong emphasis on practice but at the same time incorporates the latest research in the field. The book demonstrates a strong belief in the ability of children to learn, and in the ability of teachers to increase children's learning potential. The series authors are distinguished practitioners in their fields who write with authority, but without jargon. With the increasingly popular constructivist framework for learning, teachers are coming to recognize the limitations of taught procedures and to find ways to encourage children to generate their own knowledge and understanding in mathematics. The challenge for teachers is to promote an environment that encourages mathematical thinking in which pupils of all abilities are able to achieve their full potential. This text brings together experiences of teachers and researchers who examine the ways children work mathematically, in order to provide an enhanced learning environment within the classroom. It also addresses key issues in current maths teaching.

Book Teaching Design and Technology in Secondary Schools

Download or read book Teaching Design and Technology in Secondary Schools written by Gwyneth Owen-Jackson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 345 pages. An aptitude for design and technology combines practical skills and theoretical knowledge, and the book addresses what this means in practice. Design and technology takes in work with such diversity as resistant materials, textiles, food and systems and control, so attention is given to connections between these areas and what makes them 'design and technology'. Together, these articles comprise a stimulating and comprehensive overview of the issues and ideas surrounding this new, popular and exciting element of the secondary school curriculum. This book is the companion to Aspects of Teaching Secondary Design and Technology.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ALAN J. BISHOP Monash University, Clayton, Victoria, Australia RATIONALE Mathematics Education is becoming a well-documented field with many books, journals and international conferences focusing on a variety of aspects relating to theory, research and practice. That documentation also reflects the fact that the field has expanded enormously in the last twenty years. At the 8th International Congress on Mathematics Education (ICME) in Seville, Spain, for example, there were 26 specialist Working Groups and 26 special ist Topic Groups, as well as a host of other group activities. In 1950 the 'Commission Internationale pour I 'Etude et l' Amelioration de l'Enseignement des Mathematiques' (CIEAEM) was formed and twenty years ago another active group, the 'International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education' (PME), began at the third ICME at Karlsruhe in 1976. Since then several other specialist groups have been formed, and are also active through regular conferences and publications, as documented in Edward Jacobsen's Chapter 34 in this volume.
