Download or read book Calculating Instruments and Machines written by Douglas R. Hartree and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-09-27 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1950, this book was based on a short series of lectures given by the author at the University of Illinois in 1948. Aimed at the non-specialist, the chief aim of the text was to provide a general introduction to contemporary developments in the field of calculating instruments and machines. But there is some treatment of the historical side of the subject, with appreciation shown for the vision and foresight of key pioneers Charles Babbage and Lord Kelvin. This is a concise and informative volume that will be of value to anyone with an interest in the development and history of computation.

This book was released on 2019-01-11 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume traces back the history of interaction between the “computational” or “algorithmic” aspects of elementary mathematics and mathematics education throughout ages. More specifically, the examples of mathematical practices analyzed by the historians of mathematics and mathematics education who authored the chapters in the present collection show that the development (and, in some cases, decline) of counting devices and related computational practices needs to be considered within a particular context to which they arguably belonged, namely, the context of mathematics instruction; in their contributions the authors also explore the role that the instruments played in formation of didactical approaches in various mathematical traditions, stretching from Ancient Mesopotamia to the 20th century Europe and North America.

Download or read book Milestones in Analog and Digital Computing written by Herbert Bruderer and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-01-04 with total page 2072 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Third Edition is the first English-language edition of the award-winning Meilensteine der Rechentechnik; illustrated in full color throughout in two volumes. The Third Edition is devoted to both analog and digital computing devices, as well as the world's most magnificient historical automatons and select scientific instruments (employed in astronomy, surveying, time measurement, etc.). It also features detailed instructions for analog and digital mechanical calculating machines and instruments, and is the only such historical book with comprehensive technical glossaries of terms not found in print or in online dictionaries. The book also includes a very extensive bibliography based on the literature of numerous countries around the world. Meticulously researched, the author conducted a worldwide survey of science, technology and art museums with their main holdings of analog and digital calculating and computing machines and devices, historical automatons and selected scientific instruments in order to describe a broad range of masterful technical achievements. Also covering the history of mathematics and computer science, this work documents the cultural heritage of technology as well.

Download or read book The Didactical Challenge of Symbolic Calculators written by Dominique Guin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While computational technologies are transforming the professional practice of mathematics, as yet they have had little impact on school mathematics. This pioneering text develops a theorized analysis of why this is and what can be done to address it. It examines the particular case of symbolic calculators (equipped with computer algebra systems) in secondary education. Drawing on a substantial program of French innovation and research, as well as closely related studies from Australia and the Netherlands, it provides rich illustrations of the many aspects of technology integration, and of the ways in which these are shaped at different levels of the educational institution. This text offers the first English-language exposition of how an innovative synthesis of the theories of instrumentation and didactics can be used to illuminate the complexities of technology integration. It offers important guidance for policy and practice through its analysis of the central role of the teacher and its identification of key principles for effective didactical design and management. These distinctive features make this book essential reading for researchers, teacher educators, and graduate students in mathematics education and technology in education, as well as for teachers of mathematics at upper-secondary and university levels. This is a revised, English-language edition of D. Guin & L. Trouche (Eds.) (2002) Calculatrices symboliques. Transformer un outil en un instrument de travail mathématique: un problème didactique (Editions La Pensée Sauvage, Grenoble).

Download or read book Routes to the Information Revolution written by Alexander Arbel and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-03-18 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a precise and comprehensive history of the digital computer. It is the first collection of available information about the digital computer, beginning with the philosophical and logical advancements in the early 20th century that led to it. The book explores the histories and stories of the computer, tracing its roots and routes. It examines and analyzes commonly accepted views on the digital computer and its development, and offers clearer and more accurate alternatives to them. Its approach, though dealing with the introduction and development of the digital computer, is applicable to the history of technology in general. The central question considered here is, why were the automatic digital program-controlled calculating devices developed simultaneously in Germany, the USA and the UK during the period 1935-1945? Astonishingly, the technologies, ideas, calculating means and calculating techniques existed and were available long before the development of the automatic digital program-controlled calculating device. However, only during the period 1935-1945 did they materialize. Ideas that may be viewed as attempts to develop this type of device began early in the modern era. Babbage (1834) and Ludgate (1909) took the first steps and constructed devices that may be viewed as something like computers. Nevertheless, the concrete fulfillment and practical use of these ideas was accomplished only in the period of 1935-1945, by a group of developers who acted in ignorance of what was done before. This book opens with a detailed discussion of these processes.
