Book On the Determination of Stresses and Displacements for Unsymmetrical Deformation of Shallow Spherical Shells

Download or read book On the Determination of Stresses and Displacements for Unsymmetrical Deformation of Shallow Spherical Shells written by Eric Reissner and published by . This book was released on 1957 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report is concerned with problems of bending of thin, elastic, shallow spherical shells of uniform thickness. Explicit expressions are derived, in terms of stress function and axial displacement component, for radial and circumferential displacement components. It is shown that certain uni-valued portions of the solution for stress function and axial displacement components give rise to multi-valued expressions for radial and circumferential displacement components. A new type of solution of the differential equations is derived which is multi-valued insofar as the stress function is concerned but given uni-valued expressions for all quantities which should be uni-valued. It is shown that this type of solution is needed for the analysis of problems for which a resultant side force is acting along the edge of a symmetrical circular boundary of the shell. The nature and form of this side-force solution differs in important respects from the corresponding known solution for the case of a flat plate. No direct transition is possible from the shell solution to the corresponding flat-plate solution. As a specific application, a shell is considered which is supported at its outer edge and which has a small symmetrical rigid insert.

Book Analysis of Stress Concentrations in Thin Spherical Shells

Download or read book Analysis of Stress Concentrations in Thin Spherical Shells written by and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The flexural behavior of thin spherical shells in the elastic range of stresses is discussed. Attention is restricted to cases in which the displacements under loading are of smaller order than the thickness of the shell. The class of problems considered is that of a loading which produces stress concentrations in the proximity of the loaded zone and in which deformations are small. Equations and solutions are presented for the elastic analysis of small displacements in thin spherical shells under bending. The use of the conical co- ordinate system transforms the spherical shell into a conical one. Solutions are accurate in a region closely approximating the corresponding actual spherical shell region and are valid in a shallow region around the point of tangency of the conical coordinate system to the spherical shell. Special design charts and tables applicable to specific problems which frequently arise in practice are presented. (H.G.G.).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is often said that these days there are too many conferences on general areas of computational mechanics. mechanics. and numer ical methods. vJhile this may be true. the his tory of scientific conferences is itself quite short. According to Abraham Pais (in "Subtle is the Lord ...• " Oxford University Press. 1982. p.80). the first international scientific conference ever held was the Karlsruhe Congress of Chemists. 3-5 September 1860 in Karlsruhe. Germany. There were 127 chemists in attendance. and the participants came from Austria. Belgium. France. Germany. Great Britain. Italy. Mexico. Poland. Russia. Spain. Sweden. and Switzerland. At the top of the agenda of the points to be discussed at this conference was the question: "Shall a difference be made between the expressions molecule and atom?" Pais goes on to note: "The conference did not at once succeed in bringing chemists closer together ... It is possible that the older men were offended by the impetuous behavior and imposing manner of the younger scientists" (see references cited in Pais' book). It may be observed that history. in general. repeats itself. However. at ICCM-86 in Tokyo. roughly 500 participants from both the West and the East were in attendance; there were only scholarly exchanges; the young tried to learn from the more experienced. and a spirit of international academic cooperation prevailed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study ofthree-dimensional continua has been a traditional part of graduate education in solid mechanics for some time. With rational simplifications to the three-dimensional theory of elasticity, the engineering theories of medium-thin plates and of thin shells may be derived and applied to a large class of engi neering structures distinguished by a characteristically small dimension in one direction. Often, these theories are developed somewhat independently due to their distinctive geometrical and load-resistance characteristics. On the other hand, the two systems share a common basis and might be unified under the classification of Surface Structures after the German term Fliichentragwerke. This common basis is fully exploited in this book. A substantial portion of many traditional approaches to this subject has been devoted to constructing classical and approximate solutions to the governing equations of the system in order to proceed with applications. Within the context of analytical, as opposed to numerical, approaches, the limited general ity of many such solutions has been a formidable obstacle to applications involving complex geometry, material properties, and/or loading. It is now relatively routine to obtain computer-based solutions to quite complicated situations. However, the choice of the proper problem to solve through the selection of the mathematical model remains a human rather than a machine task and requires a basis in the theory of the subject.

Book Boundary Element Analysis of Plates and Shells

Download or read book Boundary Element Analysis of Plates and Shells written by Dimitri E. Beskos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analysis of plates and shells under static and dynamic loads is of greatinterest to scientists and engineers both from the theoretical and the practical viewpoint. The Boun- dary Element Method (BEM) has some distinct advantages over domain techniques such as the Finite Difference Method (FDM) and the Finite Element Method (FEM) for a wide class of structuralanalysis problems. This is the first book to deal specifically with the analysis of plates and shells by the BEM and to cover all aspects of their behaviour, and combi- nes tutorial and state-of-the-art articles on the BEM as ap- plied to plates and shells. It aims to inform scientists and engineers about the use and the advantages of this techni- que, the most recent developments in the field and the per- tinent literature for further study.
