Book Assessing Mathematical Proficiency

Download or read book Assessing Mathematical Proficiency written by Alan H. Schoenfeld and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-05-21 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Testing matters! It can determine kids' and schools' futures. In a conference at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute, mathematicians, maths education researchers, teachers, test developers, and policymakers gathered to work through critical issues related to mathematics assessment. They examined: the challenges of assessing student learning in ways that support instructional improvement; ethical issues related to assessment, including the impact of testing on urban and high-poverty schools; the different (and sometimes conflicting) needs of the different groups; and different frameworks, tools, and methods for assessment, comparing the kinds of information they offer about students' mathematical proficiency. This volume presents the results of the discussions. It highlights the kinds of information that different assessments can offer, including many examples of some of the best mathematics assessments worldwide. A special feature is an interview with a student about his knowledge of fractions and a demonstration of what interviews (versus standardized tests) can reveal.

Book Assessment for Intervention Second Edition

Download or read book Assessment for Intervention Second Edition written by Rachel Brown-Chidsey and published by Guilford Publications. This book was released on 2015-03-03 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Problem-solving assessment is an essential component of multi-tiered systems of support such as response to intervention (RTI) and positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS). This authoritative work provides a complete guide to implementing a wide range of problem-solving assessment methods: functional behavioral assessment, interviews, classroom observations, curriculum-based measurement, rating scales, and cognitive instruments. Prominent experts demonstrate the key role of assessment throughout the process of supporting at-risk students, from identifying academic and behavioral problems to planning and monitoring interventions. Several chapters include reproducible forms that can be downloaded and printed in a convenient 8 1/2" x 11" size. New to This Edition Reflects current education policy and best practices. Seminal chapter on problem solving by Stanley L. Deno has been updated with a revised model. All chapters now discuss assessment in the context of multi-tiered systems of support. Chapter on working with culturally and linguistically diverse learners. Chapter on graphing student data. See also Response to Intervention, Second Edition, by Rachel Brown-Chidsey and Mark W. Steege, which provides step-by-step guidelines and practical tools for implementing RTI schoolwide.

Book Handbook of Response to Intervention and Multi Tiered Systems of Support

Download or read book Handbook of Response to Intervention and Multi Tiered Systems of Support written by Paige C. Pullen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-16 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the many issues facing special education (and general education) today, it is difficult to imagine one more important or timely than response to intervention (RTI). Almost overnight RTI has become standard practice across the nation. Unfortunately, RTI remains ill-defined, falls far short of its evidence-based practice goal, is almost invariably misused, and often results in more harm than good. Nevertheless, as a conceptual framework RTI has great potential for ensuring that students with disabilities receive appropriate, evidence-based instruction. The mission of this handbook is to present a comprehensive and integrated discussion of response to intervention (RTI) and its relation to multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) in both special education and general education. Although the two terms are currently used interchangeably, distinct differences exist between them. Therefore, chapters are dedicated to distinguishing the two concepts—RTI and MTSS—and describing each one’s unique role in both general and special education. In addition, the authors recommend a third term, Multi-Tiered Instruction, to differentiate the practices related to the purpose of the specific intervention.

Book Approximate Number System and Mathematics

Download or read book Approximate Number System and Mathematics written by Jingguang Li and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2019-11-25 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humans process quantity information without the aid of language or symbols to guide a variety of everyday life decisions. The cognitive system that supports this intuitive skill is often referred to as the approximate number system (ANS). It has been argued that the ANS serves as the foundation of the formal symbolic number system—mathematics. Abundant empirical evidence is supportive of this view: acuity of the ANS is positively correlated with symbolic math performance, training of the ANS may cause improvements in symbolic math performance, and the ANS and symbolic number processing may share a common neural underpinning. However, recently several theories and empirical data cast doubt on the role of the ANS in symbolic math processing. This e-book aims to advance our understanding of the underlying mechanisms of the overlap between the ANS and mathematics.

Book Making Math Accessible to English Language Learners Grades 9 12

Download or read book Making Math Accessible to English Language Learners Grades 9 12 written by r4Educated Solutions and published by Solution Tree Press. This book was released on 2011-12-30 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making Math Accessible for English Language Learners provides practical classroom tips and suggestions to strengthen the quality of classroom instruction for teachers of mathematics. The tips and suggestions are based on research in practices and strategies that address the affective, linguistic, and cognitive needs of English language learners. Although this resource centers on teaching English language learners, many of the tips and suggestions benefit all students. Making Math Accessible for English Language Learners follows five case studies of composite student profiles throughout the book with opportunities for reflection to increase personal awareness of both the teacher’s role and students’ needs in the mathematics classroom, tasks to provide interaction with the content of the book, and hot tips for ideas applicable to real-world classroom situations.

Book Mathematics Assessment and Evaluation

Download or read book Mathematics Assessment and Evaluation written by Thomas A. Romberg and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1992-07-01 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are current testing practices consistent with the goals of the reform movement in school mathematics? If not, what are the alternatives? How can authentic performance in mathematics be assessed? These and similar questions about tests and their uses have forced those advocating change to examine the way in which mathematical performance data is gathered and used in American schools. This book provides recent views on the issues surrounding mathematics tests, such as the need for valid performance data, the implications of the Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics for test development, the identification of valid items and tests in terms of the Standards, the procedures now being used to construct a sample of state assessment tests, gender differences in test taking, and methods of reporting student achievement.

Book Abstract Mathematical Cognition

Download or read book Abstract Mathematical Cognition written by Wolfgang Grodd and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2016-08-09 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the importance of mathematics in our educational systems little is known about how abstract mathematical thinking emerges. Under the uniting thread of mathematical development, we hope to connect researchers from various backgrounds to provide an integrated view of abstract mathematical cognition. Much progress has been made in the last 20 years on how numeracy is acquired. Experimental psychology has brought to light the fact that numerical cognition stems from spatial cognition. The findings from neuroimaging and single cell recording experiments converge to show that numerical representations take place in the intraparietal sulcus. Further research has demonstrated that supplementary neural networks might be recruited to carry out subtasks; for example, the retrieval of arithmetic facts is done by the angular gyrus. Now that the neural networks in charge of basic mathematical cognition are identified, we can move onto the stage where we seek to understand how these basics skills are used to support the acquisition and use of abstract mathematical concepts.
