Book excerpt: This study examined the maternal, infant, and social-contextual factors related to maternal separation anxiety before (at 1 month postpartum) and after the return to employment (at 6 months postpartum and at 15 months follow-up), during the first year postpartum. The study also explored the role of social-contextual factors (husband/partner support, child care, and social support) as moderators between difficult infant temperament and maternal separation anxiety.Findings indicated that maternal separation anxiety significantly decreased during the first year postpartum. In addition, the predictors for each assessment period differed across time. Hierarchical regression analyses indicated that at 1 month, mothers' attitudes towards the risks of employment and social support significantly contributed to maternal separation anxiety. At 6 months, mothers' attitudes and difficult infant temperament significantly contributed to maternal separation anxiety. On the other hand, at 15 months, mothers' attitudes, difficult infant temperament, and husband support significantly contributed to maternal separation anxiety. In general, maternal separation anxiety seemed to be mostly related to factors within the mother-infant dyad with social-contextual factors playing a minimal role across the first year postpartum. Contrary to expectations, social-contextual factors did not appear to buffer the relation between difficult infant temperament and maternal separation anxiety.The study is based on a subsample of 195 mothers selected from the database of 1,364 participating families in the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Study of Early Child Care (NICHD). The subsample included all mothers in dual-earner families who had returned to full-time work within the first six months postpartum and who had infants in full-time child care at 6 and 15 months. Mothers completed interviews and questionnaires pertaining to: demographics, difficult infant temperament, risks of maternal employment, husband/partner support regarding maternal employment decision, child care, and social support. Mothers also reported their feelings toward separating from their infants before and after the return to work during the first year postpartum using Subscale 1 (General Maternal Separation Anxiety) of the Maternal Separation Anxiety Scale by Hock, McBride, & Gnezda (1989).

Based on evidentiary studies, major depression in either parent can interfere with parenting quality and increase the risk of children developing mental, behavioral and social problems. Depression in Parents, Parenting, and Children highlights disparities in the prevalence, identification, treatment, and prevention of parental depression among different sociodemographic populations. It also outlines strategies for effective intervention and identifies the need for a more interdisciplinary approach that takes biological, psychological, behavioral, interpersonal, and social contexts into consideration. A major challenge to the effective management of parental depression is developing a treatment and prevention strategy that can be introduced within a two-generation framework, conducive for parents and their children. Thus far, both the federal and state response to the problem has been fragmented, poorly funded, and lacking proper oversight. Book excerpt: The primary aims of this research are to explore the factors that determine the amount of time that women in two cohorts spend out of the labor force after their first birth, and to investigate if postpartum time out of work has an influence on two factors of women's wellbeing: marital quality and mental health. In this project, I conduct both descriptive and analytical investigations of the longitudinal data from two cohorts of nationally representative National Longitudinal Survey of Youths (1979 and 1997 cohorts). First, using both cohorts of the NLSY, I investigate several sociodemographic factors that are hypothesized to predict the length of time women spend out of work following their first births. My findings indicate that women's postpartum employment break duration is stratified by education and income at first birth. Women with the greatest pre-birth SES have the shortest breaks, and women who are most disadvantaged at first birth have both short breaks and very long breaks. The results of this analyses indicate several cohort differences. In particular, the younger group of women takes significantly shorter breaks. Next, I examine the relationship between break length and two dimensions of women's wellbeing: marital quality and mental health. I find, using the NLSY79, no indication of a significant association between break duration and two separate dimensions of marital quality in any models in which I control for marital duration. Using the NLSY97 to explore the association between break duration and mental health, I find a significant declines in mental health for breaks lasting between 5 and 12 weeks; however, the effects of this relationship are mediated by the addition of controls for age at first birth and marital status. Throughout this research, I explore the stratification of women by SES. I find that, overall, women are stratified in terms of length of breaks. Women with the greatest SES are shown to return to work most quickly. On the other hand, Further, tthis research also indicates that the women with the least income and education both return very quickly and are at risk of very long breaks from employment.

Separation anxiety disorder in adulthood is associated with high levels of disability. Research and clinical data indicate that overlooking the diagnosis of adult separation anxiety disorder may result in substantial costs in the form of disability and suffering. Over the last decades, the Psychiatry School of Pisa, in the person of Director Giovanni B. Cassano, M.D. and Stefano Pini, M.D. has conducted seminal studies in this area and brought research data into clinical practice. At the same time, the Pisa School has made a paramount contribution to the DSM-5 reformulation of adult separation anxiety disorder, which has since been transferred to the Anxiety Disorders chapter. Barbara Milrod, M.D. is an unusual clinical investigator. She has conducted clinical research in separation anxiety disorder, panic disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder for the past two decades.
