This book was released on 2024-06-04 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the multifaceted challenges and effective strategies associated with mastering listening comprehension, particularly in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context. The book is structured into seven comprehensive chapters, each delving into a specific aspect of listening comprehension. The introductory chapter sets the stage by highlighting the importance of listening skills in language acquisition and the growing need for effective comprehension strategies in a globalized world. In the second chapter, "Listening Comprehension," the book delves into the nature of listening, differentiating between various types of listening and discussing why listening is often considered a neglected skill. This chapter provides a foundational understanding of listening as an active process that involves receiving, interpreting, and responding to spoken messages. It underscores the complexity of listening comprehension and the cognitive load it places on learners. Chapter three, "Factors Affecting Listening Comprehension," explores the myriad factors influencing a student's comprehension of spoken language. These factors include physical elements like hearing ability, psychological aspects such as anxiety and motivation, experiential factors, attitudes toward listening, gender differences, environmental conditions, and societal roles. By identifying these factors, the book provides a comprehensive view of the external and internal influences on listening comprehension. The fourth chapter, "Potential Problems in Learning Listening Comprehension," identifies specific challenges learners face, such as the inability to control the speed of speech, limited vocabulary, difficulty recognizing contextual signals, problems with interpretation, and the inability to concentrate. It also addresses how established learning habits can hinder listening development. The fifth chapter, "Possible Strategies in Learning Listening Comprehension," offers solutions by introducing metacognitive, cognitive, and social-affective strategies. These strategies aim to help learners plan, monitor, and evaluate their listening processes, utilize mental techniques to enhance comprehension and leverage social interactions to improve listening skills. The sixth chapter, "Students' Problems and Strategies in Learning Listening Comprehension in EFL Context," applies the previous discussions specifically to English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. It examines how the general problems and strategies manifest in EFL contexts and provides tailored advice for learners and educators in these settings. Finally, the seventh chapter, "Model of Assessing Students' Problems and Strategies in Learning Listening Comprehension," presents a framework for evaluating the strategies' effectiveness. This model helps educators assess students' listening skills and identify the most effective interventions. Overall, the book offers a detailed analysis of the challenges and solutions in learning listening comprehension, providing valuable insights and practical strategies for both students and educators.

Download or read book Listening Thinking Being written by Lisbeth Lipari and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-12-07 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although listening is central to human interaction, its importance is often ignored. In the rush to speak and be heard, it is easy to neglect listening and disregard its significance as a way of being with others and the world. Drawing upon insights from phenomenology, linguistics, philosophy of communication, and ethics, Listening, Thinking, Being is both an invitation and an intervention meant to turn much of what readers know, or think they know, about language, communication, and listening inside out. It is not about how to be a good listener or the numerous pitfalls that stem from the failure to listen. Rather, the purpose of the book is, first, to make readers aware of the value and importance of listening as a fundamental human ability inextricably connected with language and thought; second, to alert readers to the complexity of listening from personal, cultural, and philosophical perspectives; and third, to offer readers a way to think of listening as a mode of communicative action by which humans create and abide in the world. Lisbeth Lipari brings together historical, literary, intercultural, scientific, musical, and philosophical perspectives, as well as a range of her own personal experiences, to produce this highly readable analysis of how “the human experience of being as an ethical relation with others . . . is enacted by means of listening.”
Download or read book Listening written by Judi Brownell and published by Allyn & Bacon. This book was released on 2005 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new Third Edition of this text encourages students to view listening as a process involving six interrelated components. Each component is developed along the parallel dimensions of theory and skill building. Within the unifying theoretical framework of the HURIER model, students not only develop an understanding of the listening process, they also acquire specific, observable listening skills. This behavioral approach enables students to increase their listening effectiveness while developing an understanding of listening-related research and theory. The impact of culture, technology, and globalization is also explored. Ethical questions are raised through sidebars, and students are challenged to consider the responsibilities associated with listening behavior. Extensive self-assessment instruments, individual and group activities, and case studies further distinguish this engaging text. Students readily recognize the important role listening plays in their daily lives and acquire strategies to improve their listening behavior. New to the Third Edition The new edition has an increased emphasis on listening purpose and context as variables in determining which components of the HURIER model will be most important for listening effectiveness. The increased emphasis will move students from skill development to how skills are applied to achieve desired results. A new section on Emotional Intelligence now appears in Chapter 6, showing its relevance to interpreting messages and explaining how emotional intelligence can improve listening skills. A new section on appreciative listening appears in Chapter 3 to help students respond to today's stressful environment and the need for approaches to relaxation. Because the rapid increase in technology has changed the way we listen, more coverage on listening and technology has been added throughout the text. The new edition has been thoroughly updated with current research and new examples to provide the most recent information available. Praise for "Listening: Attitudes, Principles, and Skills" "[This text] includes fabulous activities and application exercises, case studies, and concise chapters. . . . I have already adopted this book and, in the face of other listening texts reviewed, will remain with this text. . . ." "Lisa Abramson, Western Oregon University" "The HURIER model and organizing the book around it are major strengths of this book. . .[which are] especially important when teachers are increasingly required to measure course outcomes as part of program assessment." "Thomas Marshall, Robert Morris University"

Download or read book Sounding Composition written by Stephanie Ceraso and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2018-08-17 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Sounding Composition Steph Ceraso reimagines listening education to account for twenty-first century sonic practices and experiences. Sonic technologies such as audio editing platforms and music software allow students to control sound in ways that were not always possible for the average listener. While digital technologies have presented new opportunities for teaching listening in relation to composing, they also have resulted in a limited understanding of how sound works in the world at large. Ceraso offers an expansive approach to sonic pedagogy through the concept of multimodal listening—a practice that involves developing an awareness of how sound shapes and is shaped by different contexts, material objects, and bodily, multisensory experiences. Through a mix of case studies and pedagogical materials, she demonstrates how multimodal listening enables students to become more savvy consumers and producers of sound in relation to composing digital media, and in their everyday lives.

Download or read book Genres of Listening written by Xochitl Marsilli-Vargas and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2022-08-08 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Genres of Listening Xochitl Marsilli-Vargas explores a unique culture of listening and communicating in Buenos Aires. She traces how psychoanalytic listening circulates beyond the clinical setting to become a central element of social interaction and cultural production in the city that has the highest number of practicing psychologists and psychoanalysts in the world. Marsilli-Vargas develops the concept of genres of listening to demonstrate that hearers listen differently, depending on where, how, and to whom they are listening. In particular, she focuses on psychoanalytic listening as a specific genre. Porteños (citizens of Buenos Aires) have developed a “psychoanalytic ear” that emerges during conversational encounters in everyday interactions in which participants offer different interpretations of the hidden meaning the words carry. Marsilli-Vargas does not analyze these interpretations as impositions or interruptions but as productive exchanges. By outlining how psychoanalytic listening operates as a genre, Marsilli-Vargas opens up ways to imagine other modes of listening and forms of social interaction.
