Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The games are tennis and murder … and private eye Max Roper has a bevy of beautiful tennis competitors to turn his head when he goes after the murderer of lovely Aussie tennis star Wendy Cliff. It was set up to look as if it was one of her opponents in the Los Angeles ladies pro tournament who did it—Wendy was garroted by a piece of tennis stringing. These include all the lovely women athletes who are taking part in the international competition. In addition to the local aspirants, the usual collection of current and ex- champions, there is the Italian start who boasts the most devastating-looking legs Roper has ever seen, the cuddly young Russian doubles pair, the beautiful French star, and their various friends and countrymen who hate to see them lose. Just to complicate Max’s problem, there is a fighting liberal senator from California threatened by a fanatic guerilla group of international assassins with whom Roper is waging a long-time personal vendetta. In the course of his investigation (as usual, filled with risk and violence), other murders follow. And Roper, pursuing the blood trail, quickly has his own life to worry about. Max has to go to the limit with his special brand of endurance and fighting character before he can come up with the winner and bring the murderer along. "

Book Sex and Violence

Download or read book Sex and Violence written by Tom Pollard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-11-17 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sex and Violence examines the history and social dynamics of film censorship in the United States. It examines censorship controversies throughout film history, from the beginning of cinema in the 1890s to the present. The book focuses both on formal censorship systems, including state and local censorship boards and industry self-regulation efforts, to unofficial censorship rendered by pressure groups and powerful social movements. It probes beneath the official rhetoric and explanations, revealing sensitive, festering controversies. The book critically examines dozens of Hollywood's most controversial (and interesting) movies, focusing on recurring issues and censorship themes. The book reveals the social and political processes of vetting films and their effect on film form and content. In addition, it examines the use of sexuality and violence in movies and the effects of movie censorship on those issues. Finally, it analyzes and makes recommendations for dramatic changes in motion picture ratings.

Book Woody Allen and Charlie Chaplin

Download or read book Woody Allen and Charlie Chaplin written by Jill Franks and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2019-06-07 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The comic archetype of the Little Man--a "nobody" who stands up to unfairness--is central to the films of Woody Allen and Charlie Chaplin. Portraying the alienation of life in an indifferent world with a mix of pathos, irony and slapstick, both adopted absurdist personas--Chaplin's bumbling yet clever Tramp with his shabby clothes, and Allen's fool with his metaphysical witticisms and proclivity to fall in love too quickly. Both men were auteurs who managed to retain creative control of their work and achieve worldwide popularity. Both suffered from scandals regarding their attraction to younger women. Drawing on psychoanalysis and gender studies, this book explores their films as barometers of their respective historical moments, marking cultural shifts from modernism to postmodernism.

Book Opera as Soundtrack

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jeongwon Joe
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2016-05-13
  • ISBN : 1317085477
  • Pages : 260 pages

Download or read book Opera as Soundtrack written by Jeongwon Joe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Filmmakers' fascination with opera dates back to the silent era but it was not until the late 1980s that critical enquiries into the intersection of opera and cinema began to emerge. Jeongwon Joe focusses primarily on the role of opera as soundtrack by exploring the distinct effects opera produces in film, effects which differ from other types of soundtrack music, such as jazz or symphony. These effects are examined from three perspectives: peculiar qualities of the operatic voice; various properties commonly associated with opera, such as excess, otherness or death; and multifaceted tensions between opera and cinema - for instance, opera as live, embodied, high art and cinema as technologically mediated, popular entertainment. Joe argues that when opera excerpts are employed on soundtracks they tend to appear at critical moments of the film, usually associated with the protagonists, and the author explores why it is opera, not symphony or jazz, that accompanies poignant scenes like these. Joe's film analysis focuses on the time period of the post-1970s, which is distinguished by an increase of opera excerpts on soundtracks to blockbuster titles, the commercial recognition of which promoted the production of numerous opera soundtrack CDs in the following years. Joe incorporates an empirical methodology by examining primary sources such as production files, cue-sheets and unpublished interviews with film directors and composers to enhance the traditional hermeneutic approach. The films analysed in her book include Woody Allen’s Match Point, David Cronenberg’s M. Butterfly, and Wong Kar-wai’s 2046.

Book Murder and the Movies

Download or read book Murder and the Movies written by David Thomson and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2020-08-05 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How many acts of murder have each of us followed on a screen? What does that say about us? Do we remain law-abiding citizens who wouldn’t hurt a fly? Film historian David Thomson, known for wit and subversiveness, leads us into this very delicate subject. While unpacking classics such as Seven, Kind Hearts and Coronets, Strangers on a Train, The Conformist, The Godfather, and The Shining, he offers a disconcerting sense of how the form of movies makes us accomplices in this sinister narrative process. By turns seductive and astringent, very serious and suddenly hilarious, Murder and the Movies admits us into what Thomson calls “a warped triangle”: the creator working out a compelling death; the killer doing his and her best; and the entranced reader and spectator trying to cling to life and a proper sense of decency.

Book The Reluctant Film Art of Woody Allen

Download or read book The Reluctant Film Art of Woody Allen written by Peter J. Bailey and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2016-05-27 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For five decades, no American filmmaker has been as prolific—or as paradoxical—as Woody Allen. From Play It Again, Sam (1972) to Midnight in Paris (2011) and Blue Jasmine (2013), Allen has produced an average of one film a year; yet in many of these movies Allen reveals a progressively skeptical attitude toward both the value of art and the cultural contributions of artists. In this second edition Peter J. Bailey extends his classic study to consider Allen's work during the twenty-first century. He illuminates how the director's decision to leave New York to shoot in European cities such as London, Paris, Rome, and Barcelona has affected his craft. He also explores Allen's shift toward younger actors and interprets the evolving critical reaction to his films—authoritatively demonstrating why the director's lifelong project of moviemaking remains endlessly deserving of careful attention.

Book Screens of Blood

Download or read book Screens of Blood written by Gregory Desilet and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-02-10 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Civilization seems to move ever more toward the power of words over weapons. But many people, especially Americans, still believe wrongs in life can be righted with a fist or a gun or a bomb. Cultural mythology lags reality and continues to send the message of regeneration through violence. But the transition to a healthier mythology is already underway and can be seen in the strength of an alternative trend in depictions of violence in storytelling. This book examines this trend by comparing examples drawn from film and television with the traditional popular dramatic approach--reflecting and promoting a culture of violence. This comparison shows that attitudes toward conflict in drama are a key indicator of a shift in awareness of violence in society. The book concludes with an account of increasing challenges confronting the individual in today's world and the necessity for individual producers and consumers to take greater responsibility for their choices--which shape culture through omnipresent and profoundly influential screen technology.

As Ebert noted in the introduction to the first collection of those pieces, “They are not the greatest films of all time, because all lists of great movies are a foolish attempt to codify works which must stand alone. But it’s fair to say: If you want to take a tour of the landmarks of the first century of cinema, start here. Enter The Great Movies III, Ebert’s third collection of essays on the crème de la crème of the silver screen, each one a model of critical appreciation and a blend of love and analysis that will send readers back to the films with a fresh set of eyes and renewed enthusiasm—or maybe even lead to a first-time viewing.
