Book The Captains Tales

Download or read book The Captains Tales written by David Fulton and published by Random House. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No one feels the heat of an Ashes battle more than the captains of England and Australia. The weight of national expectation, and more than 120 years of history, is on their shoulders from the moment they walk out to toss a coin and start a Test match that is like no other. The Captains' Tales offers a unique insight into the minds of a generation of captains from two great nations, who share with the reader what it feels like to call the shots in Test cricket's greatest cauldron. From Mike Brearley's cajoling of Ian Botham during the famous summer of 1981 to Ricky Ponting's revenge mission of 2006-07, each Ashes captain from the last quarter-century reveals what made him tick, his vision of where he wanted to take his team and how he handled key characters within the dressing-room. The author, former Kent captain David Fulton, delves behind the scenes for clues about how these sporting generals constructed their battle plans and uses his own experience to determine their strengths and weaknesses as leaders of men. The Captains' Tales will strike a chord not just with cricket lovers but with sporting captains of all abilities and readers who seek a greater insight into the broader issues of management and leadership.

Book Jackpot Frequency Playbook

Download or read book Jackpot Frequency Playbook written by Jaq Roth and published by eBookIt.com. This book was released on 2013-02 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many lottery players fathom their own tickets, but the fact remains 70% of all jackpot winners quick pick the elusive 6! Weekly draws generate on average 92 rollovers with 10 winners a year, but when you study the decades of bi-weekly draws there's a subtle frequency that links positions as mostly five and six ball matches. The Jackpot Frequency Playbook enables both novice and serious gamer to discover the ambiguity of play pools, extract all the winning numbers, reconfigure every 6 of 6 and 5 + 1 or 2 match possibility and once all the dots begin to connect, the game rules change, the win attitude shifts, the pools multiple, and the odds reduce to the right side of possible. If you bet the lottery as six choices from one or two pools there's every chance you could match a jackpot once in a lifetime, but if you bet six balls as six pools there's an even greater possibility you will match it twice a year! The Jackpot Frequency Playbook exploits position frequencies from seven of the most popular and challenging lotteries on the planet and explains how, where and when the 5 and 6 and 7 numbers link often consecutively, sometimes monthly, every game played, each year drawn. Nothing compares as this aligned frequency propelled with ecstatic efficiency quadruples the probability of matching multiple wins and becomes the tool for interpreting the otherwise unfathomable ways of pick 6 jackpots. The Jackpot Frequency Playbook is like nothing else before!

Book Shadows Across the Playing Field

Download or read book Shadows Across the Playing Field written by Shashi Tharoor and published by Roli Books Private Limited. This book was released on 2011-06-04 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shadows across the Playing Field tells the story of the turbulent cricketing relations between India and Pakistan through the eyes of two men - Shashi Tharoor and Shaharyar Khan - who bring to the task not only great love for the game, but also deep knowledge of subcontinental politics and diplomacy. Shashi Tharoor, a former UN under-secretary-general and man of letters, is a passionate outsider, whose comprehensive, entertaining and hard-hitting analysis of sixty years of cricketing history displays a Nehruvian commitment to secular values, which rejects sectarianism in sports in either country. Shaharyar Khan, a former Pakistan foreign secretary, is very much the insider, who writes compellingly of his pivotal role as team manager and then chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board at a time when cricket was in the forefront of detente between the two countries. In their essays, the two authors trace the growing popularization of cricket from the days of the Bombay Pentangular to the Indian Premier League. They show how politics and cricket became intertwined and assess the impact it has had on the game. But above all, their book is a celebration of the talent of the many great cricketers who have captivated audiences on both sides of the border. If politics and terrorism can at times stop play, the authors believe that cricket is also a force for peace and they look forward to more normal times and more healthy competition.

Book excerpt: This is the most complete and thorough biography of Jose Raul Capablanca, one of the greatest players in the history of chess. Beginning with his family background, birth, childhood and introduction to the game in Cuba, it examines his life and play as a young man; follows his evolution as a player and rise to prominence, first as challenger and then world champion; his loss of the title to Alekhine and his efforts to recapture the championship in the last years of his too-short life. What emerges is a portrait of a complex man with far-ranging interests and concerns, in stark contrast to his robotic reputation as "the chess machine." Book BEYOND THE PALE

Download or read book BEYOND THE PALE written by Andy Carter and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2019-11-05 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the second half of the 19th century Britain ruled the largest and most culturally diverse empire the world had ever seen, yet non-European faces were a rarity in all but the larger port cities. For the majority of Britons, the colonies were seen as distant and exotic outposts populated by natives who were frequently characterised as alien and uncivilised. Against this background, the arrival of a touring party of Australian Aborigines in 1868 caused something of a sensation. Initially viewed as a curiosity, they soon won the public over with their athleticism and demeanour. Over the following decades others followed in their footsteps; well off Parsee amateur enthusiasts in the 1880s, mixed race West Indian teams in the 1900s and the first Indian side composed of representatives of all her major communities in 1911. From the 1890s onwards the first individual Black and Asian players also began to appear for English club and county sides. They came from a wide range of backgrounds, some were princes others plantation workers, and their stories once they reached Britain were equally diverse. All of their stories are part of a tale in which cricket - that most English of institutions - became a catalyst for multi-cultural Britain and helped shape emerging national identities in the Commonwealth.

Book Australia s Asian Sporting Context 1920s 30s

Download or read book Australia s Asian Sporting Context 1920s 30s written by Sean Brawley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines Australia’s sporting relationships with the Asian region during the interwar period. Until now, Australia’s sporting relationships with the Asian region have been neglected by scholars of Australian and Asian sports history, and the broader field of Australia’s Asian context. Concentrating on the period of the 1920s and 1930s – when sporting relationships between Australia and a number of Asian nations emerged in a variety of sports – this book demonstrates the depth of these previously under-examined connections. The book challenges, and complicates, the broader historiography of Australia’s Asian context – a historiography that has been strongly influenced by the White Australia Policy and the Pacific War. Why, for example, did white Australia so warmly welcome visiting Japanese sportsmen at a time when the Pacific region appeared to be inexorably sliding into a war that was informed by racial antagonisms? This book examines sporting relations between Australia and seven Asian countries (China, Japan, India, Netherlands East Indies, Philippines, Malaya and Singapore) and a range of sports including rugby, football, swimming, hockey, boxing, cricket and tennis. This book was published as a special issue of Sport in Society.
