Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: OBJECT:PHOTO shifts the dialogue about modernist photography from an emphasis on the subject and the image to the actual photographic object, created by a certain artist at a particular time and present today in its unique physicality. This shift is especially significant for a study of the period during which photography developed a distinctive formal language. A growing awareness of the rarity of images made between the two world wars has altered historians' considerations, encouraging new approaches privileging the originality of each work and the density of references each contains. This richly illustrated publication culminates a four-year collaborative research endeavor between The Museum of Modern Art's Departments of Photography and Conservation, and nearly 30 visiting scholars, on the material and aesthetic evolution of avant-garde photography in the early twentieth century. The 341 modernist photographs known as The Thomas Walther Collection, a major museum acquisition made in 2001, is presented in its entirety, establishing a new standard of depth for the medium. Essays by curators, researchers, and conservators consider the history of collecting from this era to the present and how deepening knowledge has shifted the perspective on the medium; the material facts of the Walther pictures as a baseline for understanding the development of photographic materials in this era; and how the intellectual formation of the writers of critical photographic publications of the era and the societal and cultural pressures of that historical moment inflected the photography's sense of its own history. Together with thematic, object-based case studies of groups of pictures that demonstrate new approaches in specific, divergent examples, these contributions reanimate the dialogue on this formative era in photography.

Book Photodiscovery

Download or read book Photodiscovery written by Bruce Bernard and published by ABRAMS. This book was released on 1980 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The extraordinary collection of photographs celebrates two eye-opening "discoveries" : first, that long before the invention of true color photography photographers were producing images rich in color--tones of gold, mauve, rose, blue, and many other hues; and, second, that the world's picture archives can still yield images of startling originality, often by well-known photographers. Thus, every photograph in this book is reproduced in full color, revealing the subtle tones of salt prints, ambrotypes, albumen prints, daguerreotypes, and other techniques whose real character has been known until recently only by collectors and connoisseurs. Here are works by the legendary pioneers Talbot, Daguerre, Nadar, Julia Margaret Cameron, Henri Le Secq, Gustave Le Gray, and Atget, as well as a host of astonishing pictures by unknown artists. There are also unfamiliar images by such masters as Stieglitz, August Sander, Man Ray, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Martin Munkacsi, Kertész, Paul Strand, Dorothea Lange, and Margaret Bourke-White, bringing the collection up to the eve of World War II."--Jacket.

Book American Photography

Download or read book American Photography written by Vicki Goldberg and published by Chronicle Books. This book was released on 1999 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This beautiful and informative photographic history includes images from 1900 to 1999. Many are often seen (bullet piercing the apple, splashing crown of milk, Sophia Loren looking askance at Jayne Mansfield's plunging decollete, and Dorothea Lange's Migrant Mother); but most are probably unknown, because the photos were selected not only for their visual and cognitive qualities but also for their importance to the history and development of photographic technique and usage. The century is divided into thirds for explanation's sake, and there is at least one photograph for every year. While this is a picture book, the accompanying text provides informative introductions to the uses and abuses of perhaps the century's most important medium. The book is companion to the PBS series.
