Book excerpt: Made in Italy has always been synonymous with quality and style. These peculiarities of Italian design are obvious in this volume, which recounts its history through the work of its designers. With the exception of masters of car design, not appearing in this volume, prominent designers for every historical period are presented, in descriptions detailing a synthesis of the project approach and a selection of the most significant products, by now considered veritable icons of contemporary design. Taking as its point of departure furnishings from Modern Architecture and the famous "Lettera 22" typewriter by Marcello Nizzoli, the volume dwells on some of the projects by great masters of Italian design, including Achille Castiglioni, Joe Colombo, Vico Magistretti, Bruno Munari, Ettore Sottsass, Marco Zanuso. Also considered are those laboratories and studios that, in adhering to the Radical Design movement of the 1960s and '70s, proposed projects intended to surprise and disrupt. An entire chapter is dedicated to the protagonists of contemporary Italian industrial design, those capable of reading tendencies and translating them into objects, thus creating the new Italian style that would be exported throughout the world. And the volume closes with an international reference, highlighting the examples of certain foreign designers who were able - indeed, in Italy - to drive their own ideas to success. AUTHOR: DESIGN.DOC is a publishing services agency, conceives and produces complete editorial products for print and other media, for clients in design, furnishings, art, and architecture. Every day we use dozens of tiny objects, from Post–It notes to Band–Aids. If they work well, chances are we do not pay them much attention. But although modest in size and price, some of these objects are true masterpieces of the art of design. Paola Antonelli, curator of the Museum of Modern Art's Department of Design and Architecture, is a highly celebrated figure in the world of design (she was just ranked among the top 100 most powerful people in the world of art). Paola has long been passionate about the subject of everyday objects that are marvels of design. The response to her recent MoMA show, also called Humble Masterpieces, was electric. In addition to lively coverage in dozens of publications, the museum goers spread the word about the fun of learning about and nominating their own picks for humble masterpieces. Now, in this colorful visual feast, Antonelli chooses 100 fabulous objects, from Chupa Chup lollipops to Legos to Chopsticks and Scotch tape. Each object will be portrayed with a gorgeous close–up detail, a brisk and informative text on its origin and special design features, as well as a silhouette image of the object as we see it each day. Certain to appeal to a broad audience, and to lend itself to fun, creative promotional opportunities, Humble Masterpieces will celebrate the possibility of looking at our everyday lives in an all–new way.

Book excerpt: Goods made or designed in Italy enjoy a profile which far outstrips the country's modest manufacturing output. Italy's glorious design heritage and reputation for style and innovation has 'added value' to products made in Italy. Since 1945, Italian design has commanded an increasing amount of attention from design journalists, critics and consumers. But is Italian design a victim of its own celebrity? Made in Italy brings together leading design historians to explore this question, discussing both the history and significance of design from Italy and its international influence. Addressing a wide range of Italian design fields, including car design, graphic design, industrial and interior design and ceramics, well-known designers such as Alberto Rosselli and Ettore Sottsass, Jr. and iconic brands such as Olivetti, Vespa and Alessi, the book explores the historical, cultural and social influences that shaped Italian design, and how these iconic designs have contributed to the modern canon of Italian-inspired goods.

Book Carlo Mollino

Download or read book Carlo Mollino written by Napoleone Ferrari and published by Park Publishing (WI). This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First-ever monograph on Carlo Mollino as an architect. Demonstrates Mollino's prowess in architectural design. Based on extensive new research and drawing on rich archival material. Lavishly illustrated with previously unpublished images, plans, drawings, and documents. Today, Italian architect and designer Carlo Mollino (1905-73) is known chiefly for his furniture designs. He is famous also for his erotic polaroid photography of the 1960s, which has been subject of many exhibitions and has lost nothing of its great appeal to the fashion world today. Much less attention has so far been given to Mollino's architecture, and a comprehensive critical study of his work in this field has been lacking. Yet his built work, although relatively small, constitutes a seminal contribution to modernism that is uniquely marked by a strong relationship with Surrealism. Based on years of research and drawing on rich archival material as well as on Mollino's own writings, this new book is the overdue tribute to an extraordinary personality in 20th-century architecture. It features an exemplary selection of his key designs, both built and unrealised, lavishly illustrated with images and reproductions of previously unpublished plans, drawings, and documents. Rounded out with scholarly essays by expert authors, this is a long-awaited addition to the library of architecture lovers, professionals, and scholars.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formed in 2008, Mercurio Design Lab (MDL) masterfully manages to express its design potential. Lead by Massimo, a rare architectural polymath who is motivated by a strong spirit of innovation, philosophy and experimentation, MDL seeks to elevate and balance the synergies of the Asian architectural context with indomitable Italian style and tradition. MDL considers its projects as artistic masterpieces and makes a special contribution to the architectural scene of the city through the creation of dramatic and futuristic buildings, always respecting three fundamental criteria: the functional, the aesthetic and the social. This richly illustrated monograph is a comprehensive review of MDL's exceptional artistry and diversity and it's another icon for IMAGES' Master Architect series, an absolute must for all collectors of beautiful books on sophisticated global architectural culture. Massimo Mercurio hails from Rome, where seeing soul-stirring art, grand fountains, and centuries-old palaces are a daily occurrence. For an architect's son, who lived this routine for over two decades, a visit to the high-octane Asia - with its glittering skyline and vibrant melting pot - would become a life-changing moment that made him realise the vast potentials of Italian design beyond Italy. At the age of 24, Massimo experienced life in the region where he eventually settled. For close to three decades and while working within the Southeast Asia regional context, Massimo gathered his experiences in design, construction, architecture and project management and melded these with his interests in art, with focuses on both the theoretical and practical fronts.

Book 100 objects of italian design La Triennale di Milano

Download or read book 100 objects of italian design La Triennale di Milano written by AA. VV. and published by Gangemi Editore spa. This book was released on 2012-01-29T00:00:00+01:00 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Italian Design The Milan Triennale is an Italian State institution which, together with the Municipality of Milan and the Lombardy Region, is charged with preserving and promoting Italian Design as well as carrying out research in framework programs focusing on town-planning, architecture, handicrafts, industrial production, fashion, new media, etc. In its long history, the Milan Triennale has always followed developments in the field of applied arts; from the thirties to the post-war years, during the reconstruction years and the country's economic miracle and later during the economic and energy crisis of the seventies. Since the eighties, Milan has increasingly become an international centre of design. The Triennale played a leading role in organizing important qualitative events that have enhanced the city's image. Last but not least, the foundation of the Museum of Design. To achieve its goals, the Milan Triennale has established its own Research Centre and a Permanent Collection of Italian Design. The 100 objects of Italian Design on show in this exhibition have been selected from the Permanent Collection, a unique qualitative and quantative ensemble of Italy's design legacy. The Permanent Collection is used as a basis for all exhibits on Italian Design at the Triennale or around the world: its intention is to shed new light on the history of industrial production in Italy. The pieces in the Collection illustrate the heterogeneous history of Italian design, the innovation and experimentation that have made it famous and immediately recognisable thanks to the works created by its master designers. Italy is a country with a thriving manufacturing industry that focuses on quality design and products: in fact, design represents one of the country's strategic economic resources. Its "good fortune," and niche position on the international stage and world markets is primarily due to the "system" that has gradually been developed. The system unites design culture and production which are influenced, on the one hand, by the still unrivalled works of the past - for example, those by Leonardo da Vinci - and, on the other, by the vision of a future that goes beyond mere technique and the exploitation of natural resources. The exhibition 100 Objects of Italian Design, organised by the curator of the Collection, Silvana Annicchiarico, uses the objects that have made Italian design famous all over the world to tell this story. The exhibition is a way to discover the history of a country which, thanks to its creativity and design, is once again a leader on the world stage; a role it intends to pursue and develop by welcoming all and every contribution. Davide Rampello President of the Milan Triennale

Book excerpt: "This book introduces, for the first time in English, a fascinating yet strangely neglected aspect of Italian Renaissance art. During the quattrocento painting became more popular and probably more beautiful than at any time before or since. House interiors and furniture were painted with exotic stories and symbols, one of the most fashionable possessions in the grandest room in the palazzo being the painted cassone or marriage chest." /

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The entire stylistic and industrial history of Pininfarina, a true bastion of the “Made in Italy” phenomenon, is contained in this book with its wealth of black and white and colour photos. For almost 90 years Pininfarina has been synonymous with Italian coachbuilding. Some of the most iconic cars in the history of not only Italian but also worldwide motoring have been clothed by a firm that has been recognised as the creator of true works of art. Battista Farina, known as “Pinin”, was the master craftsman who in 1930 founded in Turin the ‘’Società Anonima Carrozzeria Pinin Farina’’. The quality and the beauty of his creations soon established the firm’s reputation and well before the outbreak of the Second World War it could boast magnificent bodies on Alfa Romeo, Lancia and Fiat chassis. 1947 saw the presentation of a milestone in the history of Italian design, the Cisitalia 202. Between the 1950s and 1990s the company produced iconic designs such as the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider and the “Duetto”, the Lancia Aurelia B24 and the Flaminia, the Fiat Dino Spider and the 124 coupé, not to mention the innumerable Ferraris bodied by the prestigious Turin firm that from 1952 had become Maranello’s coachbuilder of choice. Numerous 250 GTs, the 250 Le Mans, the 365 Daytona, the 308 GTB, the Testarossa and the 288 GTO are all Pininfarina-bodied Ferraris. This book recounts the most recent history of this giant of Italian car design with all the latest products realised in particular for the Asian market where the Pininfarina brand has an increasing presence. There is also a chapter devoted to Pininfarina Extra, a brand within the brand, which since 1986 has been taking a 360° approach to design. The full story of this iconic Italian design firm finally told in a single volume.
