Book Collections Management as Critical Museum Practice

Download or read book Collections Management as Critical Museum Practice written by Cara Krmpotich and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2024-07-22 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a common misconception that collections management in museums is a set of rote procedures or technical practices that follow universal standards of best practice. This volume recognises collections management as a political, critical and social project, involving considerable intellectual labour that often goes unacknowledged within institutions and in the fields of museum and heritage studies. Collections Management as Critical Museum Practice brings into focus the knowledges, value systems, ethics and workplace pragmatics that are foundational for this work. Rather than engaging solely with cultural modifications, such as Indigenous care practices, the book presents local knowledge of place and material which is relevant to how collections are managed and cared for worldwide. Through discussion of varied collection types, management activities and professional roles, contributors develop a contextualised reflexive practice for how core collections management standards are conceptualised, negotiated and enacted. Chapters span national museums in Brazil and Uganda to community-led heritage work in Malaysia and Canada; they explore complexities of numbering, digitisation and description alongside the realities of climate change, global pandemics and natural disasters. The book offers a new definition of collections management, travelling from what is done to care for collections, to what is done to care for collections and their users. Rather than ‘use’ being an end goal, it emerges as a starting point to rethink collections work.

Book excerpt: Does boxing teach anything besides how to club someone into submission? Can it transcend its sordid reputation and instill love, compassion and honor in America's most troubled youth? In this raw yet uplifting memoir about amateur boxing, Wood tells of his begrudging return to a world he thought he left behind. He steps back into the mud of boxing, coaching two troubled teens who dream?as he once did?of becoming Golden Gloves champions. His compelling story moves far beyond the grunt and sweat of the local gym. It explores the classrooms of a suburban high school and digs through the remains of unhappy childhoods. It's a story about how boxing is a way out and how it cleanses the soul. This book brings the subculture of amateur boxing up close and weaves a powerful story of beating demons, battling for glory and gaining redemption.

Book The Baseball Glove

Download or read book The Baseball Glove written by David Jenemann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-06-12 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The baseball glove is a ubiquitous item, a crucial piece of equipment in the game of baseball, and it offers the opportunity to examine the production of material culture and social practice at numerous levels. Where and how is a glove made, and how does its manufacture square with the narratives surrounding its place in American cultural life? What are the myths, superstitions, and beliefs surrounding its acquisition, care, use, and significance? How does a glove function as the center of a web of cultural practices that illustrate how individuals relate to a consumer good as a symbol of memory, personal narrative, and national identity? How do the manufacturers of baseball gloves draw upon, promote, and in some sense create these practices? How do these practices and meanings change in other national and cultural contexts? The Baseball Glove offers students the opportunity to examine these questions in an engagingly written and illustrated book that promotes hands-on interaction with a quintessential item of material culture. At the same time, the book gives students the space for critical self-reflection about the place of material goods like sporting equipment in their lives, and it provides the chance to learn different methodological approaches to studying everyday objects.
