Book Extended Program Notes for the Master s Recital of Dylan F Thomas

Download or read book Extended Program Notes for the Master s Recital of Dylan F Thomas written by Dylan F. Thomas and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project paper consists of written extended program notes for a Master's Recital performed in the Spring Semester of 2018. These notes include short biographies about each composer's life and career, a brief introduction to the librettist, a translation of each piece, composer and librettist biographies, and style and performance practices of the selections. The recital was comprised of approximately sixty minutes of music, in six language sets: French, German, Italian, Japanese, English, and Spanish. The style periods explored the late Classical, early Romantic, mid-Romantic, late Romantic, early Twentieth-Century, mid and late Twentieth-Century. The first set featured composers Duparc and Massenet, with Pourquoi me reveillier from the opera Werther completing the set. The second set is the German set. While the Beethoven and Flotow pieces were composed chronologically before the French set, they show the vocal movement toward the Romantic period, both musically and lyrically. The third set is from turn of the century Italy. The verismo movement was the operatic answer to the global artistic shift toward realism and truth on stage, in writing, and in art. The fourth section is the Japanese set. Western culture has had an immense impact on the entirety of Japanese culture itself. One of those influences can be observed in its traditional art song. The fifth set includes two songs in English and one in Spanish. These pieces were included to highlight the contributions of modern American composers that have stayed within the traditionally operatic vocal style as seen through the Verdian archetype. The final selection on this recital was a piece by Agustin Lara (1897-1970). Granada is a popular a Spanish art song written in 1932.
