Download or read book The FCO s Human Rights Work 2011 written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Foreign Affairs Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2012-10-17 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is inevitable that the UK will have strategic, commercial or security-related interests overseas which have the potential to conflict with its human rights work, says the Foreign Affairs Committee in a report published today. The Government should not be trying to assert that the two can co-exist freely: it should instead be explaining publicly its judgments on how to balance them in particular cases. The Committee's recommendation comes in the light of the FCO's decision not to designate Bahrain as a "country of concern" in its 2011 report on its human rights work, despite the repression of demonstrations in Bahrain in 2011. The Committee recommends that the criteria for designation should be based purely on assessments of human rights standards and should not be coloured by strategic or other considerations. The Committee also challenges the Government for being inconsistent in not taking a public stance on the Bahrain Grand Prix but boycotting group stage games at Euro 2012 in Ukraine. On rendition, the Committee finds that the protracted police investigations had an unacceptable impact on the work of the Gibson Inquiry and of relevant committees. The Government should explain why current investigations into claims of rendition made by two Libyans are expected to take so long. The Committee accepts that enough progress has been made in Burma to justify some relaxation of the EU's sanctions regime, but it says that Burma's human rights record remains seriously blemished. It recommends that the UK should call for better access to those still detained as political prisoners, and should press the Burmese authorities to allow independent observers to visit Rakhine state, to assess the extent to which the rights of the Rohingya minority are being respected.
Download or read book Iran written by Walid Phares and published by Post Hill Press. This book was released on 2023-01-10 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1979, the Khomeinist regime has oppressed its own population while waging wars and terrorism against Arabs, Israel, Middle East minorities, and the United States. It expanded its military power across the region and created an international terror web. American policy toward Tehran since Carter culminated, under Obama, in offering the Islamic Republic a deal of partnership, empowering the Ayatollahs even further. The Iranian people rose several times against the regime without significant support from the US or the West. Civil societies protested strongly against Iran-backed militias in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and Yemen, but were likewise abandoned. Instead, US administrations and Congress were enticed into accepting the regime’s legitimacy despite its rogue behavior and its relentless drive to obtain nuclear weapons and develop ballistic missiles. This book tells the story of the regime, from the genesis of its terror to the legitimizing of its aggressive goals. It is about how America failed to stop the threat and how Americans can finally win that challenge once and for all.

Download or read book Understanding Iran s National Security Doctrine written by Manshour Varasteh and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2013-06-01 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new academic and analytical book tackles the strategy of Iran’s security since the new millennium, when their national security policy was reviewed to secure Iran’s position. This was implemented by the newly elected President Mohammad Khatami and modified during the presidency of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The importance of the period from Khatami to Ahmadinejad is that the clerical establishment of the Iranian regime, in order to maintain stability of the system, chose two strategic doctrines: firstly, they supported Khatami’s ‘Policy of Appeasement’ – Detente – towards the West and tried to conduct reform within the system. Secondly, hard-line conservative Ahmadinejad was brought to power based on the ‘Policy of Confrontation’ and advocated conservative ideology, which resulted in more clashes with Western governments. This book explains the doctrine of Iran’s national security in the 21st century, examining the factors related to the formulation of their national security strategy. It aims to provide a clear understanding of the nature of the clerical system’s goals, their behavior patterns in a domestic environment, and the international community. This can only be made by taking into account their particular aim and the circumstances that prevailed when decisions were made and policies were formed. There are many books written on Iran which analyses the different aspects of the mullah’s regime, but there are currently no books that focus on its national security doctrine. Manshour Varasteh has written Understanding Iran’s National Security Doctrine to give a better understanding of the clerical regime’s ambitious politics. On this basis, it is hoped this book will shed some light on the politics of Iran. It will appeal to those interested in Iran’s politics.
