Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Forty-Second Regiment Infantry: Massachusetts Volunteers, 1862, 1863, 1864 This history of the regiment was undertaken by me at the special request of several officers who knew I had written, soon after the term of service expired, considerable matter relating thereto, for my own amusement and instruction. Without this foundation to work on, written when memory was fresh, it is doubtful if a history of the regiment could be written, for references to many soldiers diaries disclosed the fact that nearly all did not contain detailed accounts of events occurring at the time entries were made. Few soldiers thought any memorandum of theirs would ever become useful for a purpose of this kind. Access to the regimental books and files of papers has greatly facilitated this history. I have not been able to write a satisfactory account of Companies C and H on detached service, or of Company K on detached service, in charge of pontoons. I found it impossible to obtain information in a way to be of service. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt: ...on posts about the works, and along the water-fronts, the reserves were held inside the forts, sheltered in the damp and vermininfested bombproofs. The officers were generally the guests of the permanent officers in charge, and occupied tents. There were also the ceaseless calls for fatigue details to land ordnance and other stores at the wharf, drag guns to the front, and return disabled pieces to the depot, besides constant work repairing the batteries damaged by the enemy's fire or the elements. A large sidewheel steamer with smokestacks painted red and lead-color, called the "Flore," was chased ashore on Sullivan's Island during the night of the 22d, and was destroyed the next day by our guns. On or about the 29th, Brig.-Gen. Edward E. Potter assumed command of the district, relieving General Scammon. About this period our fire upon the city was stronger than for some time. November 5, a small vessel was discovered ashore in front of Fort Moultrie. She seemed to be loaded with cotton and turpentine, for our shells soon set her on fire, and she burned until after dark. Colonel Mulford, our commissioner of exchange, had arrived at Hilton Head with 3,200 Confederate prisoners. He met Captain Black, the Confederate agent, on the 11th, in the Savannah River, and arranged for exchanges at that point which took place soon afterward. With November came colder and more stormy days, rendering it bleak and cheerless on Morris Island, exposed to the chilling winds and damp atmosphere. News of the re-election of President Lincoln was received with enthusiasm as a guarantee that the war would be vigorously prosecuted. Brigadier-General Hatch relieved General Potter on the 17th of the district command. Some changes had taken place among...

Book excerpt: Following huge losses of forces at Fredericksburg and Vicksburg, President Abraham Lincoln authorized the recruitment of black soldiers to the Union army. Beginning recruitment in 1863, the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment was to become the first black regiment recruited from free men north of the Mississippi River. It was decided that the black regiment would have white officers and the Governor of Massachusetts, John A. Andrews, appointed abolitionist Robert Gould Shaw as colonel. Among the white officers appointed was Luis F. Emilio, whose first-hand history of the 54th Massachusetts Regiment is an important addition to African-American history. In May 1863, the 54th Regiment left the north and traveled to South Carolina where they began their task of not only defending the Union but proving to many factions of society their equality. Being one of the first black regiments was not easy and the 54th doubtlessly faced an even more difficult struggle than the majority of Union soldiers. In spite of pay disputes, menial work exercises and a greater threat of danger from the South, the 54th Regiment proved itself to be more than equal to the white Union regiments. The regiment is perhaps best known for its part of the Second Battle of Fort Wagner on July 18, 1863. Despite suffering huge losses of life, including that of Colonel Shaw, the regiment showed itself to be unceasingly brave in the face of defeat and was commended for its part in the battle. Including many primary sources, a detailed account of the regiment's tactics in battle and an extensive appendix of soldiers in the 54th, Captain Emilio's A Brave Black Regiment is an invaluable resource for those interested in the role of African-Americans in the Civil War. Luis Fenellosa Emilio, born December 22, 1844, served in the United Staes army from 1861, aged just 16. He joined the 54th Massachusetts Regiment in 1863 and became Captain of Company E, becoming Acting Commander for the regiment following huge losses at Fort Wagner. He retired from the U.S. army in 1865 and first published A Brave Black Regiment in 1891. He died in New York in 1918.
