This book was released on 2018-01-11 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Massachusetts Agricultural College in the War The mobilization of the French Army in August, 1914, marked the initial participation of the Massachusetts Agricultural College in the World War. As soon as France declared war, Robert Henri' Chapon, a member of the class of 1914, left his position with a prominent business house in Boston, and sailed for France to take part in the world struggle. Bob was of French ancestry, and responded to the call of his native land with characteristic promptness, zeal, and patriotism. Together with thou sands of other French soldiers he was sent into active service during the first terrible months of the German advance, with inadequate military training, and was killed on the field of battle at Verdun December 30, 1914. He was the first M. A. C. Man and perhaps the first American college man to lose his life in the war. During the fall of 1914, and through the years of 1915 and 1916, a few M. A. C. Men joined the army either of their own country or of one of the allied countries engaged hi the war. By the first of January, 1917, probably a dozen men from this College were in military service. Book The United States in World War I

Download or read book The United States in World War I written by James T. Controvich and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2023-05-08 with total page 657 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the centennial of the First World War rapidly approaching, historian and bibliographer James T. Controvich offers in The United States in World War I: A Bibliographic Guide the most comprehensive, up-to-date reference bibliography yet published. Organized by subject, this bibliography includes the full range of sources: vintage publications of the time, books, pamphlets, periodical titles, theses, dissertations, and archival sources held by federal and state organizations, as well as those in public and private hands, including historical societies and museums. As Controvich’s bibliographic accounting makes clear, there were many facets of World War I that remain virtually unknown to this day. Throughout, Controvich’s bibliography tracks the primary sources that tell each of these stories—and many others besides—during this tense period in American history. Each entry lists the author, title, place of publication, publisher, date of publication, and page count as well as descriptive information concerning illustrations, plates, ports, maps, diagrams, and plans. The armed forces section carries additional information on rosters, awards, citations, and killed and wounded in action lists. The United States in World War I: A Bibliographic Guide is an ideal research tool for students and scholars of World War I and American history.

Book At the Edge of Camelot

Download or read book At the Edge of Camelot written by Donald W. Katzner and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-05-11 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the story of an academic department that underwent rapid, wrenching changes at a time and in a place that one would not have expected them to have occurred. The time was the late 1960s through the 1970s and the place was a public university heavily dependent on state funding. The Cold War was raging, the US public was fearful of communism and the Soviet Union, and politicians were speaking to these fears for political ends. Protests against racial discrimination and the Vietnam War were creating social disorder and sometimes inciting violence. And the Economics Department at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst was in turmoil. In this environment, a significant proportion of the Department's visible faculty of traditional economists was rapidly created. In spite of the anti-Marxist political climate and the dependence of the university on state politicians for funding, these traditional economists were quickly replaced by a significant and visible group of Marxian economists. The story told covers the particulars of the background for these events relating to the University of Massachusetts, the political activism of the period, and the state of the economics profession. In considerable detail, Katzner describes the events, the multi-year turmoil within the Economics Department associated with them, the eventual resolution of that turmoil into an intellectually exciting and friendly atmosphere, the significance of the events in terms of academic endeavor, and their legacy for the economics profession.
