Book excerpt: What makes a winner - in business or in sport? Why do some people consistently break sales targets, cross the line first or hammer the ball in the net with pinpoint accuracy? Natural talent and disciplined training are vital. But with two equally matched professionals, something else makes the difference that provides that extra, champion factor: the mind. Mind Games looks into the mental processes of sporting stars, identifying the attitudes and approaches that enable them to achieve peak performance, every time, and applies them specifically to the world of business. What are the key mental characteristics that make some people come out on top? How do winners channel adrenalin into controlled power while losers choke? What do sportsmen and women mean when they talk about 'the inner game', being 'in the zone' or being 'in the now'? What is it that coaches do to realise the potential they see? What are the lessons that business winners need to learn from sport's superstars? Mind Games has the full involvement of over 30 sporting household names, including Sven-Goran Eriksson, Matthew Pinsent, Clive Woodward, Nick Faldo, Jonny Wilkinson. The authors draw on extensive first-hand experiences of acknowledged sporting champions across a range of sports, identifying personal techniques proven to have worked under the pressure of top-level competition. They also draw on the expertise of professional coaches and psychologists who have worked with sportsmen and women.

Book excerpt: Never stop moving. Never look back. And never gamble with your heart… Jeremy Wilcox hasn’t had a ping on his orphan witch–hunting computer system for two, tomb-quiet months. Until he learns of a woman with a gift for disguises — and an uncanny ability to beat the house. Sloane Kennedy lives by one cardinal rule: Never stop moving. It’s the only way she knows to survive. It’s not exactly cheating — after all, tuning into and out of people’s heads is a survival mechanism. So is the spider sense that tells her the cute guy at Twin Arrows casino is watching her. When said cute guy rescues her from an unknown assailant, it turns out he knows way more about her than he should. Like that she’s adopted…and a few things she didn’t. She’s a witch, and somewhere, she has family. As Sloane learns more about her heritage, her relationship with Jeremy grows from shy kisses into a longing for something more. Roots, a home, love. But reconnecting with her birth family is no dream. It’s a nightmare that could rip her from Jeremy’s arms…and sweep her up in a mad plan to control all witches. Everywhere. Book excerpt: An authoritative exploration of the psychology of elite sport, written by an Olympic silver medallist and respected sports journalist. Throughout her career as one of the world's top athletes, Annie Vernon struggled with an existential question about the purpose of sport in our comfortable, first-world society: why do we do it? What is it about our psyche that makes pushing the mind and body to their limits in order to win a foot race, a swimming race or a rowing race such a basic human desire? Having retired from competition, Annie decided to look for answers to these questions in the world of mind games. What is the psychology behind sport at an elite level? With Team GB recording its best-ever performances at the Rio Olympic Games, having come second in the medal table in consecutive games, the public is aware of elite sport and the techniques used by our sporting heroes more than ever. Whether it be performing under pressure, coping with nerves, teamwork, or building self-belief in the face of adversity, the methods that elite sports-people use are also relevant to everyday life. But sports psychology is still regarded as something of a mystery. How exactly do elite sports performers harness the power of their mind in pursuit of physical perfection? Through interviews with leading sports stars and the latest scientific research, Mind Games discusses elite sports psychology in a way that is interesting to the watching public, sports fans and sports-haters alike, with Annie drawing on her own first-hand experiences to walk them through this fascinating subject.

Book excerpt: There comes many times in life when one is bent double under the burden of responsibilities and no advice from anyone seems to work. Personal contacts are shunned. One wants to simply curl up and shut out the world. This book is for those times. You only need to wrap your arms around the book and delve deep into its soft embrace which reassures, strengthens, and helps reinstate one’s belief in one’s self. No type of hurt equals the darkness within. There was a time when one person reached out to another and their shared experiences worked as a salve on frazzled nerves. There are books that serve as beacons to guide one through life. Authors down the ages have enriched several lifetimes. In many ways, books have taught by example. They have epitomized the best episodes of human history and shown how individuals conquered their circumstances through time and space. Books are the easiest and earliest masters. They teach unassumingly, and the best part is that we can go back again and again into their folds to relive their lessons and learnings. This book does not presume to reach the exalted heights attained by the great masters, but it definitely vies for a place among the books that one loves to thumb through to regain the mosaic vision guaranteed within the pages. This book unfolds vistas of self-enrichment where one looks inward for strength and support. Many of the lifestyle gurus have come up with targeted studies that have helped the learner seek and find. This book is an attempt at being a ready reckoner or guide for numerous situations in life where one needs to gather solace and strength. It is a mind torch to help circumvent.

Download or read book The Mind Game Film written by Thomas Elsaesser and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-03-28 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents the culmination of Thomas Elsaesser’s intense and passionate thinking about the Hollywood mind-game film from the previous two decades. In order to answer what the mind-game film is, why they exist, and how they function, Elsaesser maps the industrial-institutional challenges and constraints facing Hollywood, and the broader philosophic horizon within which American cinema thrives today. He demonstrates how the ‘Persistence of Hollywood’ continues as it has adapted to include new twists and turns, as well as revisions of past concerns, as film moves through the 21st century. Through examples such as Minority Report, Mulholland Drive, Source Code, and Back to the Future, Elsaesser explores how mind-game films challenge us and play games with our perception of reality, creating skepticism and (self-) doubt. He also highlights the mind-game film's tendency to intervene in a complex fashion in the political moment by questioning the dominant power’s intent to program both body and mind alike. Prescient and compelling, The Mind-Game Film will appeal to students, scholars, and enthusiasts of media studies, film studies, philosophy, and politics.

Perfect to bring on road trips or long flights! Instructions: First, the player works through the categories and writes down four options for each. For each category, they should pick two dream examples of the category. For example their dream spouses. They should also pick two nightmare spouses. Once all the categories are filled with four options, the player draws a quick spiral in the spiral space until someone tells them to stop (if you're playing alone, just draw with your eyes closed and stop randomly). Starting at the top of your spiral and working down, count how many lines there are in your spiral. That's your magic number! Write it in. Now, start on the word 'Mansion' and count to your magic number. Count the words, 'Mansion, Apartment, Shack, House' separately and then count each of the options. So if your magic number is 6, your finger will land on the second 'Spouse' option. Draw a line through the option your finger landed on. Now keep counting to 6, crossing out the sixth option each time. The next option to cross out for 6 would be the fourth job option and so on. Continue counting until you have eliminated all but one option in every category. Enjoy reading your fortune! Book David Fincher Mind Games

Download or read book David Fincher Mind Games written by Adam Nayman and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2021-11-23 with total page 659 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Fincher: Mind Games is the definitive critical and visual survey of the Academy Award– and Golden Globe–nominated works of director David Fincher. From feature films Alien 3, Se7en, The Game, Fight Club, Panic Room, Zodiac, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Social Network, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Gone Girl, and Mank through his MTV clips for Madonna and the Rolling Stones and the Netflix series House of Cards and Mindhunter, each chapter weaves production history with original critical analysis, as well as with behind the scenes photography, still-frames, and original illustrations from Little White Lies' international team of artists and graphic designers. Mind Games also features interviews with Fincher's frequent collaborators, including Jeff Cronenweth, Angus Wall, Laray Mayfield, Holt McCallany, Howard Shore and Erik Messerschmidt. Grouping Fincher's work around themes of procedure, imprisonment, paranoia, prestige and relationship dynamics, Mind Games is styled as an investigation into a filmmaker obsessed with investigation, and the design will shift to echo case files within a larger psychological profile.
