I couldn’t put this down and raced through all the chapters… Time literally flew… I loved every minute of it.’ Bluemoonblogger, ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ She’s the daughter you never knew… But how far will she go to get the life she never had? Today I’m hosting a family party. One that’s different to every celebration we’ve had before. Because I’ve invited my secret daughter to it. I’ve never forgiven myself for abandoning her as a baby, with just a scrawled note tucked into her soft yellow blanket, saying her name was Hope. As soon as she reached out, I knew I had to meet her. My family all seem ready to accept her with open arms, their forgiveness a blessing I barely deserve. And I dare to believe that maybe we are all going to have a happy ending after all. So I try to put all those small, strange things that have been happening to me in recent weeks out of my mind. The missing money, my lost charm bracelet, the broken window, the fire… But as the drinks are poured and everyone’s talking animatedly, I hear a knock at the door. Download or read book Death and the Visitors written by Heather Redmond and published by Kensington. This book was released on 2024-08-20 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ties between a young Mary Shelley, her stepsister Jane “Claire” Clairmont, poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, and the already-infamous Lord Byron grow increasingly tangled as they're drawn into a dangerous investigation in this vivid historical mystery exploring the birth of teenaged Mary’s creative genius and the roots of a real-life trio who would later scandalize 19th century England even as they transformed the literary world. 1814, London: Foreign diplomats are descending on London in advance of the Congress of Vienna meetings to formulate a new peace plan for Europe following Napoleon’s downfall. Mary and Jane’s father, political philosopher William Godwin, is hosting a gathering with an advance party of Russian royal staff. The Russians are enthusiastic followers of Mary’s late mother, philosopher and women’s rights advocate Mary Wollstonecraft, which leads to a lively dinner discussion. Following their visit, Jane overhears her father reassuring his pushiest creditor that the Russians have pledged diamonds to support his publishing venture, the Juvenile Library, relieving his financial burden. But when Godwin is told the man who promised the diamonds was pulled from the River Thames, his dire financial problems are further complicated by the suspicion that the family may have been involved in the murder. Stepsisters Mary and Jane resolve to find the real killer to clear the family name. Coming to their aid is Godwin’s disciple, the dashing poet Percy Shelley, who seems increasingly devoted to Mary, despite the fact that he is married. And a young woman Jane befriends turns out to be the mistress of the celebrated poet—and infamous lover—Lord Byron. As both sisters find themselves perhaps dangerously captivated by the poets, their proximity to the truth of the Russian’s murder puts them in far greater peril . . .

Download or read book Affectionately In Jesus and Mary written by Edward Makuta and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-03-31 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of short stories examines the lives of five very different men as they study for the priesthood and experience seminary life. Affectionately in Jesus and Mary presents a collection of related short stories about the lives of five very different men. Each man is studying for the priesthood, but they approach their seminary studies very differently. The stories chronicle the day-to-day sacred, secular, holy, sinful, heroic, and petty thoughts, words, and deeds of the five men as they journey through each of the stages of training and formation that culminate in ordination into the priesthood. Vinnie Lauter tries to account for his need to always be the center of attention, even in the seminary. Eddie Moszka wonders if being a virgin is a blessing or a curse, while JV Delancey constantly struggles with religious obedience and with the demands of community living in the seminary. Jay Kenny increasingly feels that Thomism, the official philosophy and theology of the Catholic Church, has strapped him in an emotional and intellectual straightjacket. The saintly and scholarly Sean Saint-Jean, although he has personally reconciled Christianity and evolution, struggles with the ban on teaching and publishing on the topic. These stories delve into a private world that is normally hidden from view, exploring the lives of menwhether admirable or blameworthywho inhabit this world.

Download or read book The Art of Editing written by Tim Groenland and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2019-02-21 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The place of the editor in literary production is an ambiguous and often invisible one, requiring close attention to publishing history and (often inaccessible) archival resources to bring it into focus. In The Art of Editing, Tim Groenland shows that the critical tendency to overlook the activities of editors and to focus on the solitary author figure neglects important elements of how literary works are acquired, developed and disseminated. Focusing on selected works of fiction by Raymond Carver and David Foster Wallace, authors who represent stylistic touchstones for US fiction of recent decades, Groenland presents two case studies of editorial collaboration. Carver's early stories were integral to the emergence of the Minimalist movement in the 1980s, while Wallace's novels marked a generational shift towards a more expansive, maximal mode of narrative. The role of their respective editors, however, is often overlooked. Gordon Lish's part in shaping the form of Carver's early stories remains under-explored; analyses of Wallace's fiction, meanwhile, tend to minimise Michael Pietsch's role from the creation of Infinite Jest during the mid-1990s until the present day. Drawing on extensive archival research as well as interviews with editors and collaborators, Groenland illuminates the complex and often conflicting forms of agency involved in the genesis of these influential works. The energies and tensions of the editing process emerge as essential factors in the creation of fictions more commonly understood within the paradigm of solitary authorship. The mediating role of the editor is, Groenland argues, inseparable from the development, form, and reception of these works.
