Book Mary Howitt Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book Mary Howitt Vol 1 of 2 written by Margaret Howitt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mary Howitt, Vol. 1 of 2: An Autobiography How this autobiography gradually grew into shape can best be told in my mother's own words, drawn from the correspondence of half a lifetime. In 1843 she thus addresses her elder sister, Anna: - "Many tenderly endearing incidents came crowding into my mind of our young life in Uttoxeter, especially connected with thy unselfish, amiable, sweet spirit, which seems to me without a shade. Thou and I had been for years, nay, all our girlhood, one; we had no thought or feeling unshared. There arc little incidents which have occurred in my life, such as a look, a changing colour, nay, even a sigh, that will remain in my mind for ever. It is especially so as regards thee and those times. I remember so much, which, I dare say, thou hast forgotten, but which draws my heart, as by the most powerful attraction, to thee. How I shall like to talk over these things with thee!" Endowed with a retentive memory, deep-rooted affections, and poetic feeling, my mother delighted to speak of the Past with her children. We, in our turn, were always asking this, that, and the other question, when incidents especially charmed and interested us. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1744, the disputed Austrian succession threw the whole of Europe into arms, and France and England were of course once more at war. In expectation of this event, when an invasion from Canada might be feared, New York fortified Albany and Oswego, and the friendship of the Six Nations was secured. This precaution was additionally necessary, as they had taken offence, owing to a collision which some of their people had come into with the backwoodsmen of Virginia. At a convention held at Lancaster, to which Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Maryland were parties, the Six Nations, with due oratory and ceremonial, relinquished all title to the valley of the Blue Ridge, the central chain of the Alleganies. The western frontiers thus secured, New England proposed a combination of the five northern colonies for their mutual defence, which New York declined, trusting to enjoy her former neutrality...FROM THE BOOKS.

Book The History of Magic

Download or read book The History of Magic written by Joseph Ennemoser and published by . This book was released on 1854 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joseph Ennemoser (1787-1854) was an Tyrolean doctor and scientist, noted for his use of magnetism and hypnosis. He was a forerunner of Freud in his belief in the connection between the mind and physical health, and his interest in psychology led to investigations into the paranormal and magic. He became well known for his presentations about magic, delusions and apparently supernatural occurrences. He suggested that most of these phenomena appeared miraculous only because of a lack of understanding of the laws of nature. The History of Magic was published in Leipzig in 1844, and translated into English in 1854 by William Howitt, a leading Spiritualist writer. Volume 1 deals with the different categories of magic and mysticism, and how they were viewed in ancient times. He discusses visions, dreams and soothsaying, and miracles in the Bible, and the link between classical medicine and oracles.

Book The Spider and the Fly Illustrated

Download or read book The Spider and the Fly Illustrated written by Mary Howitt and published by . This book was released on 2023-02-24 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mary Howitt's classic 19th Century poem, "The Spider and the Fly," warns its young readers against the danger of flattery and evil counsel. In her famous tale, the flitting Fly is overwhelmed by the cunning Spider, due in part to the Spider's deception, but also because of the Fly's own sins of vanity and naivety. The poem is told in an engaging rhyme and rhythm and is colorfully illustrated by Ukrainian artist Yelyzaveta Anysymova. This edition of Howitt's tale of moral hazard is a great addition to any child's bookshelf. Mary Howitt (1799-1888) was an English author of over 180 books, many written for children. Among her literary accomplishments were her translations of many tales by Hans Christian Andersen and her work as an editor on the Fisher's Drawing Room Scrap Book. She was recognized and rewarded for her life's work with a silver medal from the Literary Academy of Stockholm and a Civil List Pension from the United Kingdom. Yelyzaveta Anysymova is a self-taught children's book artist from Ukraine. She draws inspiration from the people and beauty of her hometown of Zaporizhzhia.
